Awesome! I like it alot =)
ps: You may want to correct the “REACARO”.
thanks for the typo pick-up
Forget the Ford Focus RS, I want one of these!
And the RS is like 15k more than this thing.
Renault Sport rocks. This IMO is better than Golf R, Focus RS or even the WRX/Rallyart thingies. Good to see hot hatch well and truly back in business.
Better than a Golf R??, have you bumped your head, its not even close to the Golf GTi.
Having said that they were coming from a very tacky low and undesirable base. This may actual put them back into contention, even if it;s the bottom of the pile.
It does look like a cheap Astra SRi copy
Not close to a Golf GTI? It will murder a Golf GTI on any road, track or beauty contest you care to name.
Performance-wise, it is very closely matched with the Golf R. Track times from overseas slightly favour the Megane (despite the Golf R’s AWD) but for daily use the performance levels are very similar. Megane is much cheaper than a Golf R though.
As for a copy of an Astra.. um, this has been in production in Europe for over a year and images were shown around at least a year before that. The recent Astra concept that’s been shown around the last few months is a blatant copy of this car, not vice-versa.
Mate what century you at?
The Megane RS250 on track is quicker than the Focus RS and VW Scirocco R.
But, the Focus RS in the real world is Quicker especially uphill than the Megane RS250, the Volvo 5 Cylinder just has too much power.
But to respond to the “fanboys” VW has nothing to match this Megane RS2500, in it’s class.
The CC looks rubbish but other than that, Renault done good.
That’s what I thought…. until I saw it at the motor show. It actually looks a lot better in person.
sedan looks like a 10 year old design!
sport, though….. WOW!!! do want!
Saw this in a silver / grey colour at the Sydney Motor Show and it looked fantastic. The interior is a bit low rent in a couple of places but overall I liked it a lot. To my eye the Golf GTI and R look too similar to the base model Golf. When you see one of these on the road you won’t mistake it for anything else.
“I brake late and hard, and there’s not a hint of brake retardation….” – so you had a total brake failure ? Think you might mean degeneration or fade.
Also, last time I checked we still have tyres in Australia, not tires.
Love these cars! they just make you want to DRIVE them hard all the time! only negative I have of your review is
why oh why would you want one of these cars with an auto
dual clutch gearbox?? When the manual is brilliant and ads to the driving pleasure and control of the car IMO???
give me a white one with the std black wheels thanks!
Forget it GTI fanboys, the GTI doesn’t even come close to this hot hatch and it would also take the measure of the Golf R.
The RS 250 can even outperform the GTI with the DSG,a great transmission, which does well to hide the inadeqacy of the GTI’s performance against other manual hot hatches.
When the new XR5 is released, that will be another kick in the guts to the GTI..ha!..ha!..ha!
I think CA should start thinking of having a comparision between hot hatches as we see more of these cars being released. That they all should be manuals ought be one of the provisos.
This or WRX?
I’m inclined to say this is better.
I dont disagree, but it is also more expensive, less practical (only 2 doors) and will have worse resale! (probably higher running costs)
But would offer a better DRIVE
This isn’t all that much more expensive, you don’t need the Trophee pack, only the Recaros make it worth it, the 19s look mediocre though.
But Yeah, the WRX is more practical and its value won’t drop like a stone after its bought.
This thing just seems so much more focused.
Brembos, suspension so you can track it, accurate steering and a proper 6 speeder.
I think Volkswagen should introduce the Scirocco, that would be a great match.
Good to see it in yellow and blue. I’d like to see one in red as well (yeah, I’ve seen overseas pictures, but not with them all in the same lighting conditions and stuff). Not sure what colour to order mine in yet
I think we need a HOT Hatch shoot out.
Renault Sport 250
I’d like to also see how Renault Sport 250 performs compared to Nissan 370Z. Can a great FWD ever beat a reasonably good RWD? (I hope it is a yes).
I agree with a hot hatch shoot out and maybe mix it up with a couple of rear drive cars such as the 370Z and BMW135i.
The only problem I see with any such comparisions is that reviewers seem to award the gong to the hatch that is more “rounded”.If the reviewers start concentrating more on the “hotness” aspect rather than it”has nice cup holders and nice plastics” etc etc people will tend to have more credibility/confidence in such comparisions.
You are right on that one.
‘Comfort’ or nice cup holders is not on my list of priorities in this segment. Leave that, NVH and the rest to the family haulers and medium sizers.
We want to see for example:
0-100 and then increments there after
slalom and g tests
In gear acceleration time and not just 8-120
This is not an indictment of Car Advice. Hec, Wheels can’t even do this unless is a ‘special’ once a year test, whereas indside line (US) does these tests for all cars all the time.
Yep, bring it on. And with proper (local) test data too, and not manufacturer’s claims!
This segment is has really come on in terms of choice, value and performance. You might want to add the WRX Sti and Focus RS too, given that the EVO is in the list. Although where do you draw the line? Do we compare $60K+ cars with thier $40K+ counterparts? Could be interesting to see how much bang the extra $$ give.
I think he should have suggested mitsubishi ralliart rather than the evo. Apples with apples…
If Nissan sale this as a next Tiida.
People would buy them a lot.
Renault Sport (Yellow one) looks so sexy !!!
I wish Renault sale this body kits as a option.
Good to see the RenaultSport strutting its stuff where it belongs!
The RS250 is the best looker I’ve seen come out of the Renault stable for quite some time, and I’d have one any day over a Golf, Focus or WRX at the same price point.
Citroen are you taking notes?
No, Citroen is the one giving the lecture – WRC dominance.
Good point. But at the end of the day, the Customer cares about what they can drive on the road. Not some fantastical car on a rally circuit.
Anthony, how does it comparebto the VW gti?
The Golf GTI does nto stand a change in Performance / stability.
But the Golf GTI does have better quality interior, it’s German.
The Renault Megane RS250′s interior quality is worst than my 2010 Focus XR5. It is a let down, I was thinking of upgrading…
I’m betting minus because I said the GTI has a better interior than the Megane: Fact!
Because I said that I have a Focus XR5 and it has better quality interior than the Megane also; Fact!
Ignorance and Jealousy is a sad thing…
I have owned a Renault in Europe one generation before this Megane and the interior is CRAP and this new one is the same crap!
Worst quality than this Megane is the entire Holden range. Minus that!
Wake up and smell the Carcass Australia!
Renault sport does not build the F1 cars nor the engines for the Red Bull team…
so their renault engines come from MARs?
No, Renault F1 a different company
“Mac” don’t worry mate ignorance is predominant around here…
“When it comes to handling and hot hatches, few would dare argue that Renault Sport does it better than any other car manufacturer on the planet” – dude, you’re basically dissing Renault Sport as opposed to giving them props which I assume was your intent(english classes ftw). Were you meaning to say “few would argue any other car manufacturer does it better than Renault Sport” or something to that effect? No, i’m not trying to diss you nor give you english lessons, but reading an internet car journalist’s article i expected higher standards than my internet speed typing.
Seriously get over it! People like you really annoy me. Go back to complaining about your neighbor to the council.
I’m a GTI and R fanboy, but I’m salivating at the mouth when I see this car. Is Renault actually convincing me their hot hatch is better, you betcha.
I like this comment
By the way, I’m a Renault Sport fanboy…
Steve, the Clio 200 Cup is one of the best, if not the best, hot super minis Iv’e had a ride in (mates’ car). I am highly considering hopping on the Renaultsport band wagon. More exclusivity and better costs compared to other ubiquitous sports cars around the same price.
For those doubting renaultsport credentials, check Nurburgring lap times. I don’t know if they’ve put the new Megane 250′s around it yet, but currently the fastest listed front wheel drive is the Renault R26R on optional fit Toyo road tyres, and that was in 2008 (8.16.90). The Golf R (the pinnacle of a Golf), only managed 8.23 and that is in 2010, and obviously the Golf R is AWD. The next nearest FWD is Focus RS Mk II in 2009 with 8.26. as a matter of fact the less powerful renault clio’s (depending on model) come within a half second or so of 8.26, and teh fastest listed FWD VW, a Scirocco R is 8.30. Renaultsport are the go to guys for FWD chassis engineering.
According to TGUK a Transit van is just over 10s.
How long is the track? From what I read on Wikipeadia there are 3 lengths?
Length 5.148 km (3.199 mi)
Length 20.81 km (12.93 mi)
Length 25.947 km (16.123 mi)
5.1km is the GP circuit next to the big circuit, the track that F1 currently races on.
20.81km is ‘Nordschleife’, this is the big circuit everyone talks about when they discuss lap times. This section circuit is a public road unlike the GP section.
25.9km is a combination of both tracks, the circuit that the 24hr races and VLN races are held on. In fact, I think all races are held on this layout of the track. The 3rd last corner of nordschleife leads onto the main straight of the GP track and the second last corner of the GP track leads back onto nordschleife.
The times I quoted are for Nordschleife. There are actually also two Norschleife lengths as well. 20,832m, and 20,600m. The times for the Renault and VW’s are I believe done on the 20,600m length, and are for Production vehicles.
The Ford Transit van time was set by Sabine Schmitz, a female German race car driver who is a regular driver of a high performance ‘ring taxi’ at the Nurburgring. Weight was also stripped out of the van, and ‘several parts removed’ as well as a Dodge Viper used for the van to slipstream behind for a 10.08.49 laptime, done over the 20,832m length. She did 9.12 in a Jaguar diesel on the same date that Clarkson did 9.59 in the same car.
Production Renaultsport models crap all over production VW’s. VW’s try and be ‘all rounders’, worrying about comfort and NVH, whereas Renaultsport are unashamedly handling and performance focused.
Anthony, do you have any comments on the build quality? I read other articles mentioning a huge improvement over its predecessor. Do you concur?
Nice, very nice but small two door hatchbacks should not need a reversing camera.
With swoopy, sexy styling like that they should…
For Australian drivers they do!
Nelson, I assume by your earlier comments regarding your XR5 that you drive a car. If you live in Australia that would make you an ‘Australian driver’ ….
I actually agree with your earlier comments on the interior, but for a lot of people, that is secondary to performance, handling, steering, brakes etc.
You seem to get so worked up about what other people post – you need to chill dude.
PS: This is *not* a fact, just an opinion.
Nice car…refreshing interior compared to rivals.
CA, why don’t we see the car’s specs anymore at the bottom of the review like we used to in the past?
Also, can we have a comparative review of XR5, (2011 WRX hatch),GTI and this car for following areas!!
Hope to see this soon
We have an entirely new specification section.
Simply pick the make and model from the vehicle selector on the right hand side of the page.
Alborz, that’s awesome man, glad you’r getting this site constantly improved – cheers, J.
I was in the market for a Golf R. VW’s insistence on trickling these into the country ruled it out. Then I turned my attention to a GTI (I already have a mkV).
Then I saw the RS250 at the motor show. The GTI was quickly forgotten and the R no longer had the same appeal.
The RS250 puts the ‘hot’ back into hot hatch, making the VWs look almost pedestrian in comparison.
I can seriously see this car becoming a next hero car for the car enthusiasts, just like the original WRX used to be in the mid, late 90′s.
Even performance wise I reckon this would smash the original shape MY98 WRX into the weeds. Great effort, a truly great affort by RenaultSport.
And one more thing – we do not need a flappy paddle gearbox, make them all 6spd manual – for the real drivers, hot hatches need to be manual, supercars can getaway with the paddles though.
Totally disagree. I had a Clio Sport back when it was first released… VW Golf R I have now is miles ahead in quality both in materials and execution. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing and I love it… People don’t expect you to accelerate faster than them. It’s one hell of a ride and AWD makes all the difference. RS250 front wheel drive… No thanks. Resale on these things is shocking too. The previous model would lose 50% as you left the driveway. 75% over 2 years. VW Golf GTI/R maintain at least 60% of their value after 3 years and with the limited R imports, I imagine resale will be even stronger. Used MKV R32s are still selling at 80% of their original RRP.. Incredible!
So what are you actually trying to prove here. Are you trying to prove Golf-R is better than a Clio, old model clio actually, or are you trying to prove Golf-R will depreciate less. In both of these examples you showed us I still cannot see how a boxxy Golf-R is better than a Hot RS Megane.
disagree, euros tend not to have the same effect with japanese cars, i reckon expensive rare parts / tuners will kill the halo around this as being a hero.
Would love to see a direct comparison with MazdaSpeed Mazda 3 MPS which claims to beat Porsche, Aston Martin, Clubsport R8 etc from 80-120. This thing does 0-100 quicker than the Mazda so I don’t see why it couldn’t manage 80-120 any worse than Mazda?
Actually after reading the wheels review of golf R,megane and Focus RS, the Golf got canned as boring. Great finish but no excitement.
The MPS 3 struggles to get traction off the line. It could be said that it has too much (power 190KW/380nm) and an inadequate system for putting it to ground from a standing system – unlike for example the Revo Knucle of the even more powerfull Focus RS.
Once off the mark and rolling however its a repeatedly proven a 3.5sec 80-120km/ph.
To put that into perspective, that’s better than the 80-120 times recorded by Wheels for the Golf R (3.94), Evo (3.85) and Sti (3.57) (Wheels 2010 Oct). OR HSV GTS (3.6), NEW 335KWFPV GTP (3.2), FPV F6 (3.1) (Wheels 2010 Nov).
Of course we can always add or deduct a few tenths either way under different conditions, (some tests show quicker, some slower) but the MPS is a decently quick car once its on the roll.
It can’t match the latest 4WDs off the mark, though not for a lack of power. Traction is the issue for this manic little 2.3L.
At the end of the day, however, its the EVO, WRXs and MPSs – and not the V8s – which continue to take outright podium finishes in the Shannons production car series. Go Figure!
The design of RS 250 it’s more attractive then the design of a GTI. Personally I would chose the RS 250.
I just put a deposit on one of these in Trophee spec in Lunar grey with the optional xenons and front sensors. Due to be built in January, so I should get it march/april. I can’t wait to get it!!
After owning an 8L S3, the RS250 definitely looks like a decent upgrade!! Would like to know if there are companies that offer ECU re-flash for this vehicle yet? stock Golf R with APR upgrade gives app 240kw from 188kw stock [ gti 189kw from 154kw ] … Couldn’t imagine RS250′s performance with an extra 40kw !
