Vauxhall Astra VXR Opel GTC to be developed by Lotus

Lotus has a long history with GM brands such as Vauxhall and Opel. After tuning cars like the Vauxhall VX220 and the Vauxhall Carlton, which was even badged as the Lotus Carlton, reports are now confirming Lotus is putting in huge efforts towards tuning the upcoming Vauxhall Astra VXR/Opel GTC.

Apparently, the new Astra VXR, the production form of the Opel GTC Concept, will adopt a Lotus-tuned mechanical front limited-slip differential rather than the existing electronic type. This is said to help the front wheels plant as much of the engine's power onto the ground as possible.

Power is said to come from a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing between 209 and 225kW of power. Lotus is also rumoured to be working on sorting a Hyperstrut suspension system for the Astra VXR which will also help get all that power through to the ground.

The 2011 Vauxhall Astra VXR will rival the likes of the Ford Focus RS and the Volkswagen Golf R to some degree. No Australian plans have been confirmed yet, but punters are suggesting the model might be introduced onto our shores via the proposed Opel brand that could make it's way down under, separate to Holden.

Branded as a Vauxhall and Opel, the car will go on sale in Europe towards the end of 2011.
