Porsche Boxster rated most reliable car by Consumer Reports’ results

Consumerreports.org has released its latest survey results which collected data from around 1.3 million car owners in the US to unearth the most reliable and unreliable cars.

The best and the worst? The Porsche Boxster topped the results list as the most reliable car in the survey whilst the new Jaguar XF and the Audi A6 were ranked as the most unreliable cars.

Other surprises were with the luxury German brands. BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz all had a majority of cars scoring below average. BMW cars fitted with the 3.0-litre turbo engine, such as the 135i, hindered the results for BMW due to the recent fuel system issue and subsequent recall. However, BMW's M3 scored highly and was ranked as the most reliable 'sports car'.

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class was the most reliable of the three-pointed star brand, with 46 percent of its models scoring below average. Almost 75 percent of Audi models scored below average too, only the Volkswagen-branded Golf scored, predictably, well above average.

The report results are based on vehicles in the USA but the findings showed some interesting facts about American cars. For instance, General Motors vehicles topped amongst the most reliable cars, with 69 percent of its cars - including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC - ranking average or above. Chevrolet alone had 83 percent of its cars rating average or above.

Ford had plenty of reliable models recorded though, and was ranked as the most reliable American make, with 90 percent of its vehicles ranking average or above. These results included cars from Ford's premium car sector, Lincoln, as well.

Asian makes such as Hyundai, Honda, Kia and Toyota had more than 95 percent of their models scoring average or above. Only the Lexus IS250 and GS models for the Toyota brand scored below average. The recently revised Toyota Prius only just scraped in with an average rating as well.

All Subaru models were ranked above average except for the Impreza WRX model, with the Liberty ranked as most reliable Subaru. Nissan did equally fine with only one of its models - the Nissan Cube - scoring below average.
