Tata confirmed as Jaguar and Land Rover owner
According to a report in Britain’s Birmingham Post newspaper, India’s largest vehicle manufacturer, Tata Motors, is the winning bidder in the auction for Jaguar and Land Rover.
The reports states that Tata will pay $1.67 billion AUD for the two Ford luxury brands. The blue oval has no plans to make an official announcement until early next year.

Because they are in deep financial trouble. Have you never heard of a fire sale Oz? Or to put it another way, if you could not afford the repayments on you home mortgage you would take whatever was being offered to prevent a bank mortgagee in possession sale. Do I make myself clear?

‘Curry eaters’, Frugal? Racial epithets are for losers who can’t argue a point. How was the last Klan meeting? Jerk.
TATA’s buying Jag for the knowledge and technology it’ll bring. This is clear given their recent push into the international car market. They’re starved for technology and know how, and to be honest, this is a cheap way of getting that base covered?

November 7 2007
GM has struggled this year and recorded one of the highest in history.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — General Motors, no stranger to hard times and red ink, still managed to shock Wednesday when it reported an operating loss more than 11 times larger than expected and a $39 billion charge that was among the biggest profit loss hits ever reported.

50 years ago Tata was making Mercedes Benz trucks, quality wont be an issue here. Nor will it be an issue if these brands are no longer british, they have’nt been british for a very long time (ford?).
What’s the real issue is looking at what exactly caused Land Rover & Jaguar (two of the world’s most distinguishable brands) to go down this road. I’d have to agree with Meraj and say unions have a huge play in this. Hopefully Tata can bring a no-nonsense business culture back.

When japanese cars first arrived everyone dogged them as cheap jap crap now every garage houses or has at least housed a japanese car of some description.
you can see the same pattern with hyundai as the years go by the more respect they get
makes me wonder if the same could possibly go with tata of mahindra? Could it be possible that in a few years time there will be people putting comments under the aliases of “MAHINDRA MAN” or “TATA FOREVER” Defending these brands to the death
Food for thought?

Yes, the Indians have been manufacturing copies of many marques for decades(mostly British like Austins etc)much in the same way Eastern European Countries manufactured old Fiat designs under license. This doesn’t necessarily guarantee world class quality as suggested.
I think it’s a bit rich to blame unionists for Jaguar/ Landrover’s quality issues in the past and Detroit’s present woes. The fact is the highly paid executives running these corporations have been caught sleeping by their Japanese and Korean counterparts. The Japanese and Koreans are supplying what the market wants.
(Report)
December 24th, 2007 at 10:52 pm
TATA maybe able to emulate the Korean Makers and carve a nich out for themselves. How hopeless are these managers that run the American Auto Manufactures given their resources, heritage etc when the Koreans are set to knock them off in only a couple of years from a lot lower base to start.

I think its good news for TATA. With regards to quality i dont think its going to be an issue as Tatas have been making Mercs/Hondas/Opels etc and exporting to the rest of the world and Europe.
To Frugal One with regards to its Shonks comment its just a mattar of time that you would be driving car made in India whithout you even knowing about that. Regarding the $2500 car if the company has a vision and capacity to build such a car why oppose it? Dont ASSUME any thing coz you make an ASS of yourself… ahh well you are an ass any way

Well, the curry eaters / Tatas make different category of vehicles for different markets and countries. They made smoke belching buses for India since the city and state transport corps could not effort more than that while the same chaps made superb transit buses for foreign lands.
You get what you pay for. I am sure they are going to target the Indian rich with the Jag and LRs to compete against the luxury brands trying to invade India. People are rolling in cash there and even a 100K a year sold world wide would be enough to rake in more money than twice what they pay for these. They will sell 1/3 of these in India anyway.
Just wait another 20 years they will all be eating your lunch and owning your ass. The English are at fault for teaching these curry eaters to read, write and speak English! They should never have done that. Payback time, I guess. Thank God they cant speak Italian or Spanish. Can never get into Europe.

I’m not surprised that Tata bid for Jaguar, I remember a warm night in Dehli in 1973 when he picked us up in an immaculate white MK X. At the time India had a serious foreign currency issue and spare parts would have been unobtainable. When I asked him how he managed he just smiled and said that the apprentices at the works are always needing projects, they had recently manufactured a crown wheel and pinion set from drawings kindly supplied by Browns Lane.
Great dinner too!

I think any Indian company will be the death blow to both Jaguar and Land Rover. I was looking at buying the new Jaguar FX, but this news has certainly dampened my enthusiasm for this brand.
I can’t imagine any Indian company adding any value to a Jaguar — to my mind, Indians are only known for low quality, shoddy workmanship.
And Tata is mainly receiving kudos for producing the cheapest car in the world. Hardly the criteria needed to make a success of Jaguar.

Just to let you know… it is one of the FASTEST growing economy… and that cant happen with low quality craftmanship of indian workers… but that can happen with willingness to improve the quality.. and indians are doing that…
You talking about low quality of indian work??? you don’t even make anything by yourself in Australia.. ohh sorry.. yes you do… your own VegeMate.. but thats it??
do you have any famous australian enterpreneur? you might be having one or two but thats it….
talking about automobiles, have you ever heard of enfield?? it is developed in India these days and is sold throughout the world… in australia too..

Yes the Indians are here and on the go, fantastic! This is a 4×4 review so lets stick to it.
Freelander-2 as a 4 wheel drive is a great vehicle, but in my opinion is currently badged with reliability issues that existed with its predecessor (previous model), given it has a great engine, slightly overpriced for the brand and so forth, question is how will it compete with the Tiguan, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and also now a diesel Nissan X-Trail here down under. Any comments?
