Volvo plans new entry level car to rival Volkswagen Golf

By Brett Davis |

Volvo has announced it is planning to develop a new entry-level Volvo to run up against the Volkswagen Golf. The new car will be based on the Volvo C30.

Volvo’s new CEO Stefan Jacoby, spoke in London recently outlining the Swedish maker’s new plans. He said the new car “will be a derivation of the C30, a Golf competitor”. He also said the new car will be more focused on sticking to traditional Volvo/Swedish ‘functionality and elegance’ rather than the sporty branding of the current Volvo C30.

Funny thing is, Stefan Jacoby only joined Volvo in August this year after leaving as CEO of… Volkswagen Group of America. The new car is also said to be the basis of an all-wheel wagon that will follow, to rival the likes of BMW’s X1.

No time frame or schedule has been announced yet, but we’ll keep you updated.

Why not. The hatch segment is the largest expanding market ATM. The more the merrier.
Volvo is a little to “stuffed shirt” to pull Golf buyers away though. Unless they can come up with a really exciting car, they might struggle. How do you successfully mash Safe and S3xy?

Are you saying implying that the Gold is an exciting car by saying a competing product would have to be “really exciting”? Now that is funny!

“The new car is also said to be the basis of an all-wheel wagon that will follow, to rival the likes of BMW’s X1.” Oh god no! Not Volvo as well with this niche crap.

Why didn’t they just make a 5dr version of the C30 in the first place.

The C30 is a design success from all angles except the rear. The interior is awesome. Fix the rear, and I’d buy the T5!

The rear is the IS the best angle

The rest is basically S40 anyway.

Except inside. The s40 has shorter doors (of course) so they dont seem as plasticky as the C30, the C30 only has 2 rear seats against s40 3 (which actually are a pretty good size). The s40 is nicer to drive as well, IMO, the c30 feels a little front heavy though that might be imagination. I would have to say that the C30 looks better to me, especially in the R design, and I havent driven the T5 in the c30, only in the s40.

Now, there’s a point. The S40 shared much of its platform with Focus and Mazda 3, which are both Golf competitors. It would be interesting to compare wheelbase, tracks, length and width. They may already HAVE their Golf competitor.

The C30 should have been a 5-door hatchback from the start.
    Just Google for “Volvo V30″.

For the price tag the C30 really isn’t worth it. Interior is very cheap and sparce – on par with Toyota, if not below it.

Hopefully they will bring in something worthy of the price with this new one they’re gonna do.
