Toyota recall to affect 1.53 million cars worldwide and 30,000 in Australia

By Brett Davis |

It may feel a bit like déjà vu, but Toyota has just announced a worldwide recall affecting 1.53 millions cars, including some Toyota Avalon and Toyota Kluger models as well as Lexus GS300, IS250, and RX models.

The recall was issued due to a faulty brake master cylinder seal that could leak brake fluid. No incidents have been reported due to the potential leak, but Toyota is once again taking precautions. Toyota says owners experiencing symptoms of the leak will notice a warning brake light which will illuminate on the instrument cluster.

Toyota says if the problem becomes worse owners will notice a considerably softer and spongier brake pedal. In worst case scenarios, and over a long period of time, all of the brake fluid may leak out resulting in a complete loss of brakes.

Toyota has said it will notify all owners via mail requesting them to take their cars into a local dealer to have the affected components exchanged free of charge.

Specific models affected are said to include:

  • Toyota Avalon: 2005 to 2006
  • Toyota Kluger: May 2003 to November 2005
  • Lexus GS300, IS250 and RX330: 2006

    Another one?

    Ha Haa

Bet Toyota wished they had spent the extra few $$ now.

The Toyota symbol was designed to reflect the letters Q,D and R or Quality, Durability and Reliability.
These are the core values of the Toyota brand. Surely more news of recalls will tarnish these core values and this might reflect in volume sales. Probably not though. Teflon Toyota (because nothing sticks) will see nil effect because of the bullet proof repartition they have built for themselves. And that’s a pity. Because there direct competitors offer so much more. Maybe one day people might notice.

    • rentakeyboard

In the sales figures for last month something that wasnt screamed from the heights is the fact that Lexus only sold half of the usual monthly figures. Maybe the Teflon is beginiing to crack. This probably wont help.

Its a bit unfair that Lexus has to suffer, when in recent years they have furthered distanced themselves from their parent company to produce some very distinct cars. They deserve much better.

        • MattP

Lexus will suffer because, as noted in the above article, they are subject to this recall.

  • Klinky

Good to see a company recalling and replacing components in six year old vehicles ……

    • Rick

They’re only doing it because they are safety related , so by law they have no choice

  • moi

At least Toyota admit the mistake, unlike BMW and their faulty High Pressure Fuel Pumps on the N54 engine.

    • Andrew M

Thats because Toyota cant hide anymore after being pulled through the courts for sludge issues and accelarator issues etc.

Toyota have already been caught with their pants down after a long time of denying things, they would be silly to try it again so soon

      • Mythfrances

How do you explain BMW’s denial then?

      • j

There was nothing wrong with the accelerators, it was all driver error (being stupid Americans).

How are these recalls any different to any other car makers’? Is it because Toyota is such a large producer of cars that every other maker is seizing the opportunity to paint them in a bad image for faults when they arise? There were heaps of other recalls that went under the radar. No one is perfect.

Not that I’d buy a new Toyota anytime soon. None of their cars interest me except for the FT86.

        • Rick

No they don’t admit their mistakes they are still telling people that the oil use in a 200series land cruiser is ok and normal same as the failed gearboxs

  • GM

Should affect all 3 Avalons they sold here…

    • Jabba the Hutt

When did they sell the third one?

      • Trouble

It was sold to a dealership to fudge sales figures…

    • XR6T

Seriously, who buys an avalon! If that’s your idea of motoring, you may as well end it now.

CA, production of the (boring, ugly) Avalon was ceased in 2005 at Altona.

here we go again..as soon as there is a toyota recall all websites report it. yet when it happens for other manufacturers only some do. eg. another website reported a recall for honda

    • Sprat

This is what happens when you stand on top the pedestal and yell out aloud that you have the best and safest product on the market. Wolves love their prey when they are injured.

My Avalon had a faulty speedo cable. Apparently fault of the factory as they fitted the wrong cable in my car. No recall on that one!! Wondered why everyone else was going slow at 100km per hour as I went past at (my 100km speedo) – great for a new car hey!!

  • stevek

    …8.5 million last year + 1.5 = 10 million cars recalled..congratulations Toyota no-ones done that before.

  • Anthony

    I recently bought a new car,and the final 2 cars were a Toyota,and a Honda product.

But at the back of my mind were all these recalls,so I bought an Accord Euro, and am really happy with my decision.

    • JML

Google for “Honda accord deadly airbags recall” and see how warm and fuzzy you feel. No vehicle manufacturer is immune.

  • oh really

and just so people are up to date… the accelerator issue in the states was a non event. They found out the cause was old ladies pressing the WRONG pedal.

Funny the whole issue popped up around the same time there was a stimulus offer to buy new cars, and the recipients were people buying chrysler and GM products.

    Coincidence favors some car companies.

    • dan

      How is it a non-event?
      - Millions of Toyotas were recalled to replace faulty designed/built parts.
      - Lawsuits were sucessesfully brought against Toyota and many more were settled out of court.
      - The road safety authorities in the US fined Toyota millions of dollars for their lies and mismanagement.
      - People did die beause of Toyota’s faulty products, and the US court agreed.

Sure their were people that jumped on the bandwagen in an attempt to get money from Toyota, BUT there were many, many cases proven against Toyota.

      Hardly a non-event.

      • Rick

See ,exactly what I keep saying , Toyota owners will never admit their cars are duds

  • Anthony

    Toyota has recall after recall.

They are boring and bland, but have sold because they are reliable.

If that falls away, why would anyone with a pulse want one ???

VW seem to be the winner, with massive sales increases in every market it competes in……

  • yowza

^ thats because you havent seen the VW problems they have in their major markets…

look at warranty claims and such for VW…

Recalls for Toyota get more publicity as someone pointed out because they are on top of the mountain.

  • debb

I took my car in when there was a recall due to a faulty brake master cylinder seal that could leak brake fluid. Went fine till last week when my brakes are becoming really spongy and there is a squeeling sound when attempting to break.????? any clues???
