Million Hondas from Thailand plant
Honda's manufacturing plant in Ayutthaya, Thailand has reached an epic milestone, having rolled out its one millionth car since the first 'made-in-Thailand' Honda vehicle was produced in 1984.
The one millionth vehicle was a Thai domestic market 2008 Honda Accord, which is due to make its Australian debut next February.
“This accomplishment of ‘one million’ total cumulative production in Thailand is not only a testimony of consumers’ trust in the Honda brand but also a strong vote of confidence in our people, technology, and design innovations.”
The Thailand-based plant is a strategic base for Honda which provides vehicles to the Asia-Oceania regions.
Australian models originating from the plant are the Honda Jazz, Civic sedan, CR-V and the Accord.
Honda recently invested AUD$260 million in a second facility to be built adjacent to the existing one which will double the production capacity in the Ayutthaya province to 240,000 units annually.
Despite covering 680,000 square metres, the plant is only Honda's sixth largest manufacturing facility in the world, with Japan of course taking top honours.
Thailand’s total auto industry is now one of the top 10 automotive producers in the world, producing more than 1.8 million vehicles per year of which over 800,000 units are exported annually.
