BMW and Peugeot to develop hybrid engine together

BMW AG and Peugeot-Citroen company, PSA, will extend their engine production partnership to produce hybrid powertrains. The companies are currently known for producing the 1.6-litre Mini Cooper/Peugeot 207 petrol engine together.

The agreement, revealed yesterday, says the two companies will develop a range of front-wheel drive hybrid packages for the future. BMW is hoping to achieve big savings by joining heads with PSA on hybrid development, with the main focus being on the production of the electric motors used within hybrid designs.

BMW AG chairman, Norbert Reithofer, said in a joint statement with PSA CEO Philippe Varin,

"This cooperation will deliver a major contribution towards a competitive cost structure in the field of electrification. It also represents another important step on the road to sustainable mobility."

Philippe Varin, Chairman of the Managing Board of PSA Peugeot Citroën, added,

"We are pleased to broaden our long-standing cooperation based on the strong relationship that exists between our two companies. Combining both partners' expertise in hybrid technologies will clearly create competitive advantage."

It's unknown what extent of the engines will be universally developed, or if external features such as Stop/Start technology will be a separate design. Both companies have agreed not to reveal financial details of the partnership as well.
