Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG at 2010 AIMS

By Brett Davis |

Mercedes-Benz has announced details of the new Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG which is now on show at the Motor Show in Sydney. It’s the first Mercedes-Benz AMG with the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8.

The car features a sleek new body, featuring a long and low profile. It features an aggressive new front bar and traditional AMG vents inserted into the front corners. The rear is equally angry, featuring typical quad exhaust outlets inside the big rear diffuser.

Under the bonnet is where most of the changes are though. This is AMG’s new 5.5 twin-turbo V8 that promises greatly improved fuel economy figures over the existing 6.3-litre V8. Power is up to 400kW and torque is truck-like, offering up to 800Nm. All of this is back by a 10.3L/100km claimed fuel rating. It’s also emits just 245 grams of CO2 per kilometre -  great for a high-power V8 grand tourer.

Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Ola Källenius, recently said about the car, “We are heading into a new era with the CL 63 AMG: for the first time we have combined spray-guided direct petrol injection with biturbocharging and the stop/start system. Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, we have reduced both fuel consumption and emissions significantly – while at the same time increasing output and torque.”

The new Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG will go on sale in Australia in November. Prices start at $423,300. The new shape CL will also be available in CL 65, which uses a twin-turbo V12 outputting 463kW of power and 1000Nm of torque. Prices for the CL 65 will start at $519,250.

Geez…what an absolute rip off cars here are – almost TWICE what they cost in Germany AND there u can at least drive them properly! Just got back from Germany & the CL65AMG was about 210k euro which is around au300k!!!
    …I wonder where the other $220,000 goes….

    • The Realist

About $100K goes into the Labor government coffers…

      • Henry

Thank goodness the Liberals never taxed imported cars!

        • Devil666

          Not at 33% buddy.

          • http://www.caradvice.com.au Anthony Crawford

Agreed Devil. Don’t know about you guys but I can’t afford the Labour Govt any longer. A few more electricity bills, and all I’ll be able to afford is a bicycle!

        • The Realist

It was Labor who introduced the tax in the 1980s bud.

          • ABMPSV

..and Liberal continued with the tax. Just remember if Labour or Liberal introduce a tax the other party never scrap it. Kim’s GST roll back never happened. Liberal will party will continue with any new tax what Labour will bring in and other way around.

          • Henry

Maybe best to leave the debate on pro and cons of taxation policies of the major parties to a taxation policy forum – not an automotive one. As I implied, the liberals never exactly fought to have these taxes removed.

No doubt about the Labour diehards, even if Labour buries them in a mountain of debt, they’ll still be singing the Labour tune to their grave.

Don’t blame the car companies for any pricing discrepancies with overseas counterparts, blame your friendly Labour government, for introducing the LCT in the first place.

          • Henry

Thanks Anthony for your thoughts – I love how generalizations get thrown around in these forums. For your info, I voted informally at the recent elections as I felt neither party was inspiring enough to vote for..

Almost $90k for LCT? I’m in shock of this ridiculous exercise by government.
