Victoria Police head off-road in the Jeep Cherokee

By Paul Maric |

The Victoria Police and Chrysler Australia have continued their partnership, with the Victoria Police taking delivery of a brand new Jeep Cherokee.

The newly delivered Jeep Cherokee will be used for functions and high-profile events. It was seen most recently at the Royal Melbourne Show and can be spotted helping out emergency services, in addition to touring schools for various programs.

The Jeep Cherokee is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine that produces 151kW and 314Nm of torque. Although you can’t buy a fully kitted out Jeep Cherokee with lights, sirens and reflective signage, you can buy one for daily commuting from $36,990.

It took this year’s Show ‘n Shine competition at the 2010 Jeep Jamboree, demonstrating its off-road prowess in a public demonstration.

Standard off-road features include Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and an active four-wheel-drive system called Selec-Trac II.

Barely any cost to the taxpayer at all for these try-hard manufacturer supplied “promotional demos”.

    Damn that looks ugly!!!

Should blend in nicely around school zones and Toorak Rd.

While the new generation jeeps are quality cars (which we are yet to receive in Australia), these examples are pure trash

American cars are worse than Korean. Great use of money…Ever heard Subaru?

British police use Range Rovers, BMW’s, WRX and EVO’s, Prados and Volvo T5′s as everyday cop cars. Victoria Police use Falcadores and one borrowed Jeep. Great!

And do you have any idea how much those alternatives cost here?

      • ohreally

some people are under the assumption that more expensive cars = better policing.

Australian police might not have the best cars, but they certainly have some of the worlds best training.

Besides, our cops do get some nifty undercover cars. And they get the job done well.

Eg the SS. it blends in well with all of those hoons, and then they pull them over much easier.

what benefit would be gained by putting cops in range rovers? a better backseat for the apprehended? dvd headrests and leather?

When I went for my final interview at Flinders street I saw this parked down near the wharf and I must admit I thought it maybe put into use in commercial road to expand the ‘culture’ of operational members

no good for off road but great for camp!!

I wonder if it has a strobe light :-)

All jokes aside though, man I hope they don’t
    make me drive it

Yeah let’s have a look at Subaru. Aging 4 speed transmission in cars sold in 2010, and diesel engines that would have trouble pushing my kids Tonka truck.

I’d take a Kia Sportage over a subie anyday. Subaru, like Honda are stuck in the last decade and are becoming more and more irrelevant.

They could have gone with the Korean makes, if they thought spending tax payers money wisely

The Vic coppers have taken delivery of one only of these things, so it would be a long term loan arrangement from Chrysler.

What’s missing from the photo? An orange triangle and witches hats to warn of broken down Jeep ahead…

“The Jeep Cherokee is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine that produces 151kW and 314Nm of torque.” These figures are embarrassingly underwhelming.
