Audi launches V8 diesel Q7

December 18, 2007 by Karl Peskett

While we revelled in the colossal torque of Volkswagen’s V10 TDI Touareg, sister company Audi has gone one step further, and released Australia’s most powerful production diesel SUV.

Seen here, is the new Q7 4.2 TDI V8. This particular car was actually seen on Audi’s ‘Trans-Continental Crossing’ promotional trip  in September, however the new four-wheel-drive has only just hit showrooms now.

The twin-turbo V8 powerplant is the same motor in the Audi A8, albeit, with more torque. Yes, until the VW R50 goes on sale, the figures of 240kW and 760Nm are indeed the most you’ll find under the bonnet of any diesel SUV in Australia. The Q7 4.2 TDI V8 will still be quicker against the stopwatch, being clocked at 6.4 seconds from 0-100km/h and a top speed of 236km/h – the fastest diesel four-wheel-drive on the market today.

Fuel usage is quoted at an impressive 11.1 litres per 100km and it shares the same spec level as the V8 petrol Q7, meaning plenty of kit. But in addition, new technologies have been employed.

Audi Lane Assist engages from speeds above 65km/h, and will vibrate the steering wheel if the driver moves out of their lane. If the driver doesn’t indicate, the system will warn them while crossing the lane marking. The reversing camera with distance markers is also a brilliantly effective feature, being one of the best we’ve encountered.

There’s also radar-based active cruise control, and a blind spot warning system.

As in all Q7s, the 4.2 TDI V8 is available as a 5, 6, or 7 seat option, and is priced from $123,900.
