The latest spy photos of the beautiful Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione have hit the internet and looking at this masterpiece I am prompted to ask the question, why do ugly cars exist? A seemingly simple question you would think yet one that has had me stumped for years. I can’t work out why an individual or a design team would want to build something that looks like rubbish. Surely it doesn’t take any longer to design an appealing looking car than it does a dog ugly one.

I mean, what was going on at Subaru when they finished designing the new and very ordinary looking Impreza. Did they heartily slap each other on the back for a job well done…? Or did they look at the finished car, tilt their head, cross their eyes so it looked all blurry and think what could have been? I suspect the later…but why? Why make it ugly? We don’t want ugly. The ugly kid at school gets teased, the ugly kitten gets drowned and the ugly supermodel starves, so why design an ugly car?

Thankfully we still have the Italians and their intimate respect for all that is beautiful and well proportioned. Alfa Romeo have created what is arguably one of the worlds most beautiful cars. Lamborghini Muira I hear you say…yes, I think it is that good. We see photos of cars all-day every-day but this cars balance and beauty is compelling. It draws you in and has your eyes lingering long after you should have moved on to the next image.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione concept car debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt motor show and four years later as you can see from the pictures it is undergoing final testing before going into production. It features a front-mounted V8 engine that is based heavily on the Ferrari 4.2-litre unit found in the current Maserati range. Some say it retains the 4.2-litre capacity, others say it has been stretched to 4.7-litres. Being petrolheads 4.7-litres sounds mighty fine.

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is reportedly being based on a shortened Maserati Coupe platform. A Spider (convertible) version is expected with Alfa set to produce a limited run of 500 of each variant, half for the US (California...) and the other half for Europe and Asia. Australia...niente.

Word is that the order book is already full and closed and why wouldn’t it be. We have no word on what the final price is likely to be but would it really matter. If you were in the market for a Maserati or Ferrari how could you have ignored this Alfa. Build it beautiful and they will come.
