Update: Holden Barina Spark Review

Holden has launched the all new Barina Spark light car at the Sydney Motor Show. Sitting underneath the current Holden Barina, the Spark will make use of a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 59kW and 107Nm of torque. It manages a combined fuel economy figure of 5.6-litres per 100km.

The Spark is only available as a five-door hatch but promises to do wonders for Holden in the rapidly growing light-category. Prices start at just $12,490 for the base model and top out at $13,990 for the CDX. The Holden Barina Spark will go head to head with the Nissan Micra and Suzuki Alto.

This is a very style-conscious market and what we have here is a really fresh and energetic design that breaks the ‘cute car’ mould. There’s nothing look-alike about Barina Spark, which underlines its appeal as a city car with attitude. The safety story is aa big plus, given that Barina Spark is one of the only cars in its class with electronic stability conntrol and six airbags as standard fitmment.” Holden Executive Director of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, John Elsworth said.

    Nice interior, should go well.

  • Ryan

Wow, Daewoo really have picked up their game! But seriously, nice styling should sell well.

Have to agree with the above.
    I quite like it.
    It’s a neat little car.

  • Alex

Perfect little city car at a great price.

  • Ricky

Excellent!! USB audio input gets a big thumbs up, unlike the new Micra which lacks it. And at least they are saving themselves the embarassment of offering an old 4 speed auto. Obviously they are waiting until the 6-speed auto is available before adding it to the range.

  • bob

sorry but that thing is just ugly, and completely out of all proportions with its styling, look how massive the front end looks next to those tiny little wheels.

    this could rival ssanyong!!!

    • Bob.

This is ugly from every angle. The interior is better though and its good to see that it is well equiped which is expected.

Why couldn’t they have just called it a Holden Spark?? Did Holden think without Barina in its name it wouldn’t have sold as well??

  • paul84

Doesn’t look like a holden. It looks like an updated suzuki alto…But in saying that, should THIS have been badged the Cruze, atleast in somewhat resembles the original one.

  • Midi

WAT THE HELL IS THIS???? THE UPDATED DAEWOO MATIZ.. WHO BUYS THESE CARS WHEN YOU HAVE NICE CARS FROM EUROPE.

  • m2m

    That’s alotta features for 13k!

  • Shak

The only really worrying thing looks to be the seats. They look very flat. But i will se once i sit in it.

  • filippo

I wonder if it has the normal Daewoo manual gear-shift feel, which is kind of like stirring a stick in mud.

“Motorcycle-inspired Instrument cluster Trip computer” – I thought this was meant to be a car? I am sure some will love it but it’s not for me.

    • gt6

Looks better in the pics, instrument cluster looks bit too cheap and plasticky once in front of you.
Prefer to forego a trinket to or for a better more involving drive that the Micra should provide against the Spark and Alto.

  • Byron

It’s a interesting car. Exterior looks pretty good & doesn’t look cheap looking like the Alto does & the interior looks really good especially that it features the motorcycle-inspired Instrument cluster. Standard safety & features are what you’d expect on a 16k-20 car really. Looks promising & I reckon it will have the appeal to rival Barina sales in several months time, if not slowly steal Barina sales. Go HOLDEN!

  • Hooda

When are we getting the new Nissan Micra?

These days, poor countries like Thailand and India get cars like i20, i10, Micra many months before we do?!?!

  • James

There cheaper then Hyundai Getz and better. Infact on Web Wombat.com they said theres a $500 price differnece

  • James

Love this car small, jazzy and nice seats.
