2011 SSC Ultimate Aero II to break top speed record

The SSC Ultimate Aero II supercar is being built purely to beat the Bugatti Veyron Supersport record top speed of 432km/h, and to regain the title as the fastest production car in the world.

These images from Top Gear show just how serious the Shelby guys are at cracking the record. The Jason Castriota-designed bodywork looks extremely slippery with hardly any downforce aids which add aerodynamic drag.

Shelby hopes to beat the world record and just looking at the specifications, the car sounds like it will. The engine is a twin-turbo 6.8-litre V8 outputting 1007kW of power, or just over one megawatt, at 9000rpm. To add to the ridiculousness, the entire car only weighs 1179kg.

Everything on the back is there to extract air away from underneath the car, sucking it to the ground. Notice the aircraft-style wings on the top corners, we're surprised this car doesn't come with landing gear.

Reports say the cost of owning such speed will be US$970,000 ($980,000 Australian).
