Toyota FT-86G Sports Concept arrives

By Anthony Crawford |

Toyota’s FT-86G is bound to attract a big crowd at this year’s Australian International Motor Show

Meet the FT-86G. This is the car the whole world wants Toyota to build, and as quickly as possible, if you don’t mind.

Toyota says it’s a “significant model for Toyota because it gives strong clues about a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that seems destined for Australian roads post 2012.”

My only complaint to Toyota is, “Do we have to wait that long?”

  • Wayne Kerr

I won’t be impressed if it’s only got a flat 4 giving out less power than a WRX. How about fitting Subaru’s flat 6 with boost?

  • maximark

My brother has already ordered the ‘FT-86′ custom number plate.

    • Bob.

I don’t think the production car is going to be called FT-86. Last I heard I think FR-S was likely.

      • Igomi Watabi

Still, the FT-86 number plate will have a certain insider appeal.

Loving the red highlights… don’t usually like white cars. I gotta start saving some pennies cos this is gonna be the goods!

  • Sund00bie

40K’ish ? If so, give me, give me, give me!!!

    • toxic_horse

yea add another 20K to that and you may be close

Mr Toyoda said base model would be started around 2,500,000 Yen in Japan.
It’s about A$30K…So $40K in Australia price tag would be very realistic.
Then turbo version from Subaru will be around $50K…still OK !!!

      • Frenchie

        Try 60k plus!

      • Jester

2,500,000 yen – equals around55K is Oz. ITs the price of an RX-8GT is Japan and those thigns are in the mid-high 50′s here.

        • Save It for the track

On CURRENT exvhange rates 2500000 is about $31000 Australian dollars. But as we all know Aus pricing doesn’t work that simply. On that point, if the Aus dollar stays high, surely there should be some price cuts in order for many brands?

One AWD with an STI engine flavor for me please.

This is one of the nicest car I have ever seen!! What a happy looking car.But in today’s world of the road, you want to look aggressive. This thing is the definition of blind spots.

  • Lawrence Tay

Actually from the rear it looks nicer than Lexus LFA. Not too exotic but sporty.

I am From Pakistan. Can It be shipped to my country easily ?

    • My Password

Any car can be shipped anywhere as long as you are willing to pay for the costs!! Contact Toyota..

    • Third Wheel

If it’s getting shipped to Pakistan you would most likely want to tick the plastic explosive option when ordering, you don’t want it to stand out now do you!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000019885375 Taki Yamauchi

Well, it depends on which side you sit when you drive?

The Car looks hot!!! Can’t wait for the car’s specs and interior pics

    • Bob.

I have read that the production version may have a very different look as Toyota plan to go more upmarket with the car. This is because they realised it will not be able to be priced as low as they hoped. Therefore target a different and older market than previously hoped.

I read they maybe working on a smaller version instead to sit below this car and target the younger crowd.

      I could be wrong though

Can’t wait to see this in production version! I hope Toyota can deliver on what it promises!

  • http://CarAdvice The Salesman

Congratulations Toyota. You have officially managed to peak my interest. It’s been a long time.

  • LukasUtopia

Looks pretty sweet if you ask me.

  • Whitbomb07

I couldn’t give a stuff about this beyond hoping it will convince Hyundai to get the Genesis Coupe here ASAP…….

Think about it Hyundai, how many sales could you poach by getting the GC here before this shows up and even after it does? Waiting for the next gen of the GC to be in RHD is simply not good enough!

    Regards

  • Toyota Mad

Sorry to say guys who have ordered the number plate for FT 86 – it will be called Celica

And will be an affordable price $35-50

    • Bob.

Levin would have been a better name.

Maybe if their is a smaller, cheaper version they can call that Levin.

      • Jabba the Hutt

Levin? Didin’t they call one of the Corollas a Levin a several years back. Celica is what it should be as it is instantly recognisable. Let’s hope the car measures up. Toyota need an image boost.

I am a Toyota hater, but I must admit this does look good. Just make sure it looks like this in production form (not that I’ll buy it… I’ll have the Subaru version)!

  • George

I’ll be looking forward to see these in drift action.

  • j

Damn you Toyota and your teasing. I want it NOW.

Enough with your market research and product positioning. Here’s your market: the enthusiasts you have abandoned.
Product position: Cheap, reliable, fun to drive, sports car.
Competition: At $40k, the only other rwd sports car (excluding Holden/Ford sedans and utes) is the MX5.

Just god damn build it already and sell it here dammit!!!

  • My Cars Called T-Rex

These will be marketing dream with rwd in a car this size,as long as its not too exspensive.
    Good one Toyota.

  • yowza

    40K is too optimistic.. lol

Toyota Australia KNOWS their market is hanging for a Coupe…

If the Celica and MR-S sold for 45-60K…

Expect this to be around 55K-70K…

    Thats just how Australia is…

And to comment on the names..

FT-86 was the code name… then FR-S… was rumoured..

For Australia the “celica” name makes sense… but In all honesty and for the enthusiast and to keep “heritage”… they wabted a new AE86 Trueno…

Why not call it … Trueno…. Toyota Trueno… lol..
    Maybe not…

    • toxic_horse

      why not supra?

  • Old Dog

Am I the only one that doesn’t like it? The rear looks like a ten year old ford cougar, rear quarter windows pinched from a 370z, and the front is some how reminiscent of a gtr.
