Audi TT RS gets seven-speed dual-clutch transmission

Who would've thought an Audi TT could accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds? That makes it as quick as James Bond's Aston Martin DBS. Say hello to the all-new Audi TT RS seven speed automatic.

No longer is manual the quicker option for performance cars thanks to the rapidly evolving technology in automatic transmissions.

The Germans (the Volkswagen Group in particular) have been pioneering dual-clutch transmissions for some time and the pinnacle of DCT technology was first seen in the Bugatti Veyron (the world's fastest car).

Over the last few years that has trickled down to everyday cars such as a base model Volkswagen Polo, but due to a torque limit with inexpensive DCTs, high-end performance cars have had to miss out. However that is set to change with an announcement today that the Audi TT RS, the ultimate TT model, is now available in Europe with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Currently the Audi TT RS is only available with a six-speed manual transmission in Australia (there is no confirmation when the DCT variant will arrive) which does the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, additionally the manual variant uses 9.2L/100km (compared to 8.5L/100km ad 197 g/km for the DCT).

The improved fuel economy is achieved thanks to the seventh-gear being designed as an high-geared overdrive which makes sure the engine sits at the lowest revs possible on the highway.

Audi says gearshifts take just a few hundredths of a second and you simply won't notice any interruption in the flow of power when its happening.

The S tronic transmission will allow for a manual mode (changing gears via shift paddles on the steering wheel) or a choice of two fully automatic shift modes.

The Audi TT RS makes use of Audi's famous Quattro permanent All-Wheel drive and gains its power from a 2.5-litre five-cylinder TFSI engine (250 kW- 5,400 and 6,500 rpm and 450 Nm - 1,600 and 5,300 rpm).

Given the S tronic is the faster and more fuel efficient option, would you still consider the manual?
