There was an issue in NZ regarding Imported prius's (98 onwards). When the battery packs died the cost for a replacement was more than the car (something like 70k round abouts) there is a company that gets them and recons them then onsells them.

Have any of you guys seen that doco "What happened to the electric car?" in the mid nineties they were quite advanced there were rav4,and ranger pickups with recharge plugs around the cities.

im quite surprised that this new car is that inferior the ones in the mid ninties were far better in design and engineering that documentary is highly interesting

I would not buy one if it was more than 5k. I mean how much engineering is there in a electric car? Its probably much easier to make a electric car than a explosion powered car. My macbook pro has more power than this car. I could take my battery out plug it into the glove box and drive off the power of my mac. But its a fancy golf buggy. I do burnouts in a golf buggy, foot brake turn then floor it! quite fun :) heaps of low end torque! Doubt this car could do that. In seriousness, Lithium Ion batteries lose atleast 10-20% of their capacity every year. And they will reduce their capacity much faster in higher temperatures even if they aren't used. I cant help but think about the massive problem electric cars and hybrids will have when it comes time to replace the degraded lithium ion battery in 4 to 6 years depending on how you use/store the battery. Electric cars are throw away cars because i bet the battery will cost half the cost of the car. With the prius, expect the excellent fuel savings to last only a few years then expect it to come close to or get worse than other small cars.

Oh and the other awesome thing about these enviromentally friendly plug in cars...

When it takes a coal powered power plant to create the electricity to power these suckers, It really does not go to mean they are cleaner.

Then you have to think just how much that is going to cost on your electricity bill given that thing would be going hard for 10 hours a day sucking up juice.

"The vehicle takes ten hours to charge and can manage the sprint from stand still to 80km/h in a blistering 16 seconds."

You would never be able to pull out onto a freeway/highway here. You would get your head kicked in.
