Diesel runs 8 second quarter mile

December 6, 2007 by Matt Brogan

Just when we all thought diesels were frugal little rattlers incapable of any credible speeds comes this. Gale Banks Engineering in the USA has built a Chevrolet S10 diesel pick-up that has officially recorded a 8.216 second pass at a Las Vegas drag strip this month.

Producing in excess of 750kW the twin turbo 6.6 litre LBZ Duramax V8 cleared the finish line at a terminal speed of 266.45 km/h.

The Gale Banks boys also hold the FIA World Record for the fastest diesel pick-up ever with a run at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats last year recording an impressive 349.86 km/h down the flying mile.

I wonder how many Hilux and Rodeo owners will jump on the phones to the States now.

  3. Bavarian Missile says:

    Woohoo………Next diesel door slammer!!!!!!!

  4. Godspeed says:

Pretty cool. It’s obviously not intended to be like a performance diesel you could buy in a showroom, but all the same it’s a bit irrelevant

Diesel is definitely one of the “now” technologies – Audi’s R10 TDI is currently dominating Le Mans for instance.

    Very impressive!!

Next will be the 7 second electric/hydrogen car.

I would have loved to see that. I have heard Ford has a supercharged diesel they are hiding for next year!

After driving both the Golf and Focus Diesels i can understand how they pump out so much grunt. The torque on tap is huuugge. Bring it on i say. Imagine flogging a V8 diesel around Bathurst with the Supercars in tow!

  8. Mitch says:

what’s the torque for the car?

  9. Andrew M says:

    Mitch: a lot plus some

    wow a super charged diesel?
the torque on that would all be on board before you turned the key!!!!
