Volkswagen Golf 77TSI launched

By Alborz Fallah |

Volkswagen Australia has expanded the Golf range with a new entry model starting from $21,990*. The Volkswagen Golf 77TSI makes use of the same engine found in the Polo 77TSI, meaning it will deliver 77kW and 175Nm of torque (1,550 to 4,100).

The tiny 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine uses just 6.1 litre of fuel per fuel per 100km and emits 144 g of CO2 per km. Volkswagen says the downsizing philosophy is a result of the success it has had with the 1.4 litre TSI and 2.0 litre TSI engines over the last few years.

The entry model Golf will come with the same features as the previous entry model Golf 90TSI and the introduction of the 90TSI variant will see the whole Trendline range gain cruise control and multi-function leather steering wheel as standard.Volkswagen’s Multi Function Display, “Titanium” decor inserts, semi-automatic air conditioning plus a leather finish gearshift knob and handbrake lever are also added.

From the outside new 15” Wellington alloy wheels or 16″ Sedona alloy wheels for Golf Wagon showcase the changes. Safety wise, like all new Golfs there is standard ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program) plus seven airbags including a knee airbag.

The Volkswagen Golf’s 1.2 TSI engine can be coupled to either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG transmission.

  • Volkswagen Golf 77TSI  six-speed manual $21,990*
  • Volkswagen Golf 77TSI  7-speed DSG $24,490*

  • ABMPSV

Excellent engine very good torque at low revs. Same as Corolla 175Nm but Corolla at 4400 revs.

  • Bimmerc

    Aggressive price, brilliant product!

1.2TSi maybe a bit small for golf, but 175Nm at 1500rpm is reasonable. Overall it is very good value.

    • aim

Hehe in europe they launched the scoda octavia with the the same engine (if you thought that was small for a golf!)

      • ABMPSV

and what is your point. I find nothing wrong with that. Skoda Octavia is same size as the Corolla. Skoda is 24mm longer and 9mm wider and with the 1.2TSI engine acceleration to 100 is 10.8 sec 0.1 sec quicker than Corolla, top speed 192, city fuel economy is 7L/100km Corolla 9.4. I am sure you did not know all this!?

  • Devil’s Advocate

Not too bad for a single OHC, 8 valve engine.

    • delux

Imagine the power they would achieve if they doubled the cam and valve count.

      • Blown350chev

        Twice as much

        • delux

          haha naturally.

  • Jimmy

Wow, that price is very competitive. I’d be really interested to see a road test of this model soon on CA.

  • delux

That torque curve will make this a very handy tool for the city. 90tsi sounds like great value now that it has had the spec bumped up. Mighty tempting.

  • Golfschwein

    Is this sub-Trendline?

$21,990 is a great price and they’ll flog heaps. Its torque, power and economy are all superior to the 1.6 that was in the Mk 5.

    • Alex

I’ve driven the 1.6 Mk5 and it was horribly underpowered. I can’t see how anyone would want a car like that regardless of whether it has the VW badge or not.

      • Golfschwein

Won’t dispute that, Alex, but it was a choice that plenty of other people were happy with, and they’re the ones who bought them in the first place. Choice is King.

        • Alex

No doubt, if you’re happy with something, go for it.

  • Alexander

The acceleration figures (10.6 seconds to 100) is pretty much the same as most of its auto equipped rivals, so it can’t be too slow.

Does the 77tsi have the same spec as the updated 90tsi or the previous 90tsi spec?

    • milobob

It’s a bit confusing from the article but I think the 77TSI and the 90TSI have the same features which are now updated? Since the whole base model lines are typically named trendline anyway? :S

      • ABMPSV

It is easy. 77 or 90 means kW. The 1.2TSI is 1.197 liter engine 77kW at 5000 rpm with 175Nm from 1550 to 4500 rpm. The 90TSI is 1.4 liter engine 90kW at 5000 rpm with 200Nm from 1500 rpm. The 1.2TSI average furl economy is 5.8, city 7.3. The 90TSI is 6.3 averge and city 8L/100km

  • vid_ghost

nice car and its nice to see golf’s have come down in price and are better value now.

  • Alex

Looks like a great little car, and it’s great to see VW introduce an affordable Jetta and Golf to their range.

To bad P platers in QLD won’t get to enjoy it.

    • Dennis

I don’t think NSW P Platers can drive it either…

      • Stoney!

Volkswagen and ausi’s with small capacity turbo engines have been given an exemption from NSW p-plate turbo laws…. finally!

        Stoney!

        • Alex

I hate the QLD P plate laws. I can’t drive my mum’s car because it’s a turbo petrol, but I can drive my Jetta TDI… And it’s faster!

  • Don

This will boost Golf sales drastically if they market it right. Well done VW!

  • vti07

Torque of the Turbo 1.2 L engine seems to be lineball with a NA 1.8L engine. I have a question though, will the superior torque delivery of this engine compensate for the lower KW’s (compared to a NA 1.8L circa 100kws)?

I know its not a fair comparison but this car will be competing in the Corolla class.

If the car is made in Germany then this will be indeed good value.

    Eagerly awaiting road tests.

    • Phil

The acceleration times for the DSG 1.2L golf are as good as or better than an auto corolla I believe, so I would say yes. Have to remember that the torque curve in an NA motor is very peaky, so doesn’t ramp up until high RPM, whereas these little turbo motors have their peak torque on line at 1500 rpm.

    • ABMPSV

I can not remember where I was reading but the new Golf will come from a new production plant from Chemnitz about 80 km from Dresden.

      • Kim

That plant has been there a while, i always drove past it last year when i was working near there. Always had dozens or hundreds of train carriages with VWs with plastic on them!

I can’t wait until they introduce the sub basic golfs they get in germany. No power windows on the rear doors!!

  • nickdl

Very appealing package. Should put a lot of fear into Toyota, Mitsubishi and Mazda. Personally, I’d still prefer a base 3. Just wondering whether the 77TSI is actually pictured here? Those are definitely steel wheels, not alloys like you said.

  • Jumbo

Alloys are for the Golf Wagon. As for the Hatch it is pictured in the article

  • Peoplescarrep

Alloys and cruise are now standard on 90TSI, 77TSI makes do without them but they can be optioned.

  • http://ozmazda.com ozmazda

I have to agree that its great to see VW playing the market and being competitive but even with aturbo I’d rather go a 2ltr…..Mazda 3…

  • Vins

I’d agree that the 90TSI is now very attractive. Personally I think it’s a good time to get the 90TSI instead. If VW wants a pie from from Mazda, Toyota, they would have to look hard at their servicing cost and reliability. I believe those who bought a Toyota has purchase price, running cost and reliability burned in their soul. It’s good that VW has done something on the price, now let’s see the other two aspects…

  • Bimmerc

CA, please verify the manual transmission. The other media (goauto)clearly said “it is mated to a five-speed (rather than the Polo’s six-speed) manual gearbox”

Did you just assume it comes with 6 speed manual, because they share same powertrain or in fact it is 6-speed manual?

  • The Dude

Oh yes, nice & cheap… until there’s a problem. I curse the day my wife bought her VW Golf, it’s a piece of over engineered crap that has cost us a small fortune in repairs.

    • Reckless1

Err- they come with 3 years warranty.

If you think any other car is cheap to repair when out of warranty, think again. All this modern technology on all brands will begin costing owners of older cars a small fortune. Backyard mechanics don’t cut it with these products.

      • The Dude

Having owned a variety of cars over the years means my comment is based on hands-on experience. The Golf is a heavy vehicle for it’s engine size, hence the over worked engine meaning early problems. Once a head gasket goes on one of these s**t boxes be prepared for the onslaught of problems to soon follow. Give me Japanese engineering any day of the week, that-or a locally made sedan that won’t cost the earth if there’s a problem. If your happy to replace your car every three years good for you, I’m not. Therefore maintenance & repair costs matter to me, & German cars are among the worst by far…

        • Golfschwein

Now, that’s silly. On the basis of engine size for weight, what would you propose would be a good engine for a Golf? A Holden 179 red six? That’s 2.85 litres, surely sufficient.

Here’s my personal experience of Japanese engineering: a lunched 3rd gear synchro AND head gasket by 45,000 kms, and both were common problems in the fleet whose company I worked for. You were right about only one thing: other problems follow. The fleet mechanic couldn’t work out why the repaired car was out of sorts after the repair. It turns out that the HT leads were fried in the boilover. Once they were replaced, the car ran smoothly, but I could never quite trust the superb Japanese engineering again.

All of the above is hands-on experience. Touche!

          • Yonny

Come on Golfschwein, spill the brand name! I know it could have been any Japanese car, but for some reason I’m thinking Subaru.

          • The Dude

When I say “hands-on experience”, that includes the countless customers that I speak to about their experience with their car of choice. At the moment I’ve got a little-over 14 yrs invested in the auto body repair business. Which means I’m privy to a rather large cross-section of what’s actually really happening once people buy a car & then have to maintain it. What I have learned beyond all doubt is this: German cars almost always cost more to maintain/repair (unless you live in Europe) this also applies to the ‘cheap’ models. They are no better built or reliable than the latest Hyundai. Good resale value is an urban myth & more often than not you need to pay extra for equipment that should be standard. Having said this though… if I had money to burn, I’d be driving the E63 AMG-and not because of the badge on the bonnet.

        • My Cars Called T-Rex

I agree with the Dude. These engines are good out of the box but with high kms,Stay Away.

          • freddo

I agree with the dude also. Keep away from these expensive euro’s.

  • filippo

This will no-doubt increase sales for VW, which is a good thing for them. However, I can’t help but think that back in the 1990s Golfs used to have a bit of a prestige about them. Now they are so common, driving a Golf is almost the 1980s equivalent of driving a Ford Laser.

    • Reckless1

They only seem common because every time you see one you lust after it.

VW sales place the brand in 10th on sales volume, and numbers certainly do not place them in the common bracket.

It’s just that the models above in the sales charts are whitegoods, and you don’t lust after them when you see them; they are far all intents and purposes invisible.

      • filippo

Perhaps I’d lust over an R series Golf, but the base model shown in the above photos wouldn’t raise my pulse in the slightest. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, and in a way it’s commendable how VW are considering their original motto of being the ‘people’s car’: a car that anyone could afford.

      • The Dude

“They only seem common because every time you see one you lust after it”.

I can’t believe someone would use the word “lust” when talking about a dime a dozen German hatch-back which isn’t even viewed as a luxury car overseas. Just because we get ripped off here in Australia doesn’t mean they are to be lusted after… bloody marketing messing with people’s brains again.

        • Reckless1

VW sales place the brand in 10th on sales volume, and numbers certainly do not place them in the dime a dozen bracket

          • The Dude

Who said anything about numbers? the Golf is nothing more than a small run-around hatch-back which can be optioned to ridiculous levels. It has caught on with consumers because sedans are no longer fashionable & people want to own “German quality”… Take the superceded R32 Golf as a case in point, it was seriously over priced, not that quick for a performance model, cramped, jiggly harsh ride (short wheel base does that), noisy cabin (tyre rumble etc) & almost all of them have transmission problems (among other things) before they even hit 60,000 km’s. Taking a look at how these cars are priced & viewed overseas helps put them in perspective, the Golf is a budget German car made for people to get from A to B, not a car to be lusted after.

  • VWfan4areason

For (in part) Alex/vti07/02mazda/Vins; et all.
There are so many VW doubters on the Aus motoring sites. They can’t all be employees of manufacturers can they? But today I found the time to put down some facts….

    As an approximation, consider this c h e a p Golf 1.2/77Kw AUTO, vs Mazda3 2.0, or Corolla 1.8 ;
SEVEN speed DSG AUTO (vs 4 or 5-spd) – WAY BETTER !
Almost identical standing accelleration vs both: 0-100 in 10.5 secs
Performance thru gears? Well torque comes in 65% earlier than the rest, YET lasts far longer – WAY BETTER !
The Golf gets it’s max Kw at least 18% earlier in the rev range (at 5,000rpm) to balance out the myth of cubic capacity, so that in the real world the VW performance is vastly more accessible.
25% better overall fuel economy, it’s 30kgs lighter too! Round town on the urban cycle she’s still only doing 7.1/100km !
25% fewer CO2 emissions – happier in the VW.
Tow car of the year in GB – 25% better towing capacity vs Mazda.
18% lower running costs p.a. (so says WhatCar.com, the most consumer oriented car magazine in the world)
Just one service per year (so those service-guys just have 1 chance to get their claws into you/convenient too that) Airbags, resale, ride quality, decibels in cabin, to mention but a few….. build quality, long-term value & overall catchet?
They drive like a peach c.f. the also-rans and look newer and modern for longer – it’s the engineering and design see?
    Slam dunk VW !!!

    • MazMagic

“Better” car which falls apart after 3 years!!! No wonder we read VW jokes like ‘Virtually Worthless” or “VW – you will need the warranty”.

And yet, VW/Audi/Skoda etc. fans still say their cars are more superior! It like saying the ALP stuffed up many things but we still vote them in!!!

      • ABMPSV

What is your source about VW falling apart after 3 years or you just playing around! I can prove that you are wrong!

      • F1MotoGP

You must be jealous or you do not know nothing about cars. I would not say this about Toyota even there was a lot of recalls. Do your search on the internet and you discover more about Audi/Skoda/VW.

    • riceboy

i have a mk 5 GTI Golf 2008… 2 door locks, 1 interior door trim/handle, 1 mirror adjuster switch, 1 mechatronic unit for the DSG under warranty… would hate to imagine what starts to break down AFTER the 3 year warranty expires…

    • Vins

I don’t doubt VW making good car. For those who know cars, we know 77TSI is way better than a Corolla from technical aspect. But to many people who just want a reliable transport without much interest in cars, I believe they can’t even differentiate between DSG and normal auto. And Toyota targets those people. And those people would drive their car way after warranty has expired and still expect their car to be reliable and cheap to maintain. If VW is targeting those group, it is fair to say that VW has to look hard on their service cost and reliability.

    • fawefwa

i’d love to smash your face in

  • Reckless1

The only problem with this car will be availability.

To get the colour/options that you want will require the car to be sheduled, built and then shipped and then through the agonisingly slow Patrick process, which includes the agonisingly slow customs and checking for seeds, etc with the ever present possibility of a batch of cars requiring quarantine and fumigation because of a dead rodent.

With the rapidly increasing world demand for the VWs, delivery is unfortunately not getting any faster.

77kw is plenty for buzzing around town, and the turbo torque delivery is sweet.

I prefer my GTI though – it has 2.5 times the power, 2.0 times the torque, 2.0 times the accelleration, and cost twice as much. Twice the car :)

    • Richard

Why would you have to wait for a 77TSI? You choose colour and transmission choice. Not many options at all for the 77TSI.

VW have also reduced the option availability on the 90TSI for the same reason.

  • bane

These have been on sale in NZ for a few months (although only available with DSG).

The 1.2 is okay in the golf – relatively torquey round town, but can feel a bit breathless accelerating at open road speeds. If you drive the 1.4 (90TSI) at same time, the 1.4 feels much more effortless.

The 1.2 when in the Polo is much more energetic.

The aussie pricing is pretty sharp though, equivalent A$27k in NZ for DSG 77TSI.

  • Ricky

Why would anyone now buy the 1.2T Polo when for $2,000 more they can get the Golf?

    • ABMPSV

      Maybe Polo prices will drop?!?

    • Adam

The Polo 77 TSI is better equiped than the entry level Golf. It’s also about 200kg lighter so it will be faster too.

  • Nick K

Get the base model Golf, add 18″ R32 wheels from Tempe, sat nav unit from Waywell (factory look alike) and sport springs from VW… Adds around $2,500 to the price… Very nice!

    • Golfschwein

You made me do a search on Waywell. Can you get the gear in Australia and is it any good?

      • Nick K

No, only through the factory in Shenzen China. I have a friend with this head unit on a Tiguan and it looks great and works well. It looks factory, uses SD card based nav (your choice of software, he has Tom Tom), has Bluetooth, CD, DVD, AM / FM radio, rear camera, etc. Runs on Windows CE. It is not as good as a factory RNS50 but for around $500AUD it’s decent and a new mapping CD won’t cost you $1,200. I am seriously looking at updating my old MK IV Sport to a 90TSI and adding this head unit, R32 18s and VW sport springs. On a fleet deal I could have a car like this, with the extras on the road for under $31K as a DSG. If I wanted a budget wagon I could do this with a 90TSI Skoda Octavia, again just over $30k specced like this.

        • Golfschwein

          thanks nick.

    • Damian

“Get the base model Golf, add 18″ R32 wheels from Tempe, sat nav unit from Waywell (factory look alike) and sport springs from VW… Adds around $2,500 to the price… Very nice!”

… and as a consequence, add more unsprung weight and rolling resistance to what is already, a desperately slow car. All looks and no substance.

      • ST

Horses for courses. As long as the owner likes it, who are we to criticises?

        • Nick K

Ok, you got me a 90TSi is really what is needed… all looks and a bit more substance.

  • Mythfrances

I just want to criticize on the exterior look of the car a bit…it looks worse than a Corolla IMO. Other than that, I have no problem with it.

  • Shak

Thank God they changed that Plastic wheel, because it one the one blot on an otherwise perfectly finished interior in a small car.

  • LukasUtopia

Polo prices will probably drop over time, especially if the world economy doesn’t properly get back up on it’s feet anytime soon.

There is only one criticism I would make about the Golf, the rear seats don’t fold completely flat like the Polo’s do. Apart from that it’s a very good allroader, even for small families.

  • red fox

As a European car owner myself, the duty cycle of the turbocharger and the major service cost would still be the worries, and more importantly, their quality and reliability are more like a Mitsubishi or Ford than a Honda.

Btw, does the manual version get 6 gears??

  • MK

The big plus not mentioned, you can park your $22 000 Golf next to a BMW/Audi/MB/Lexus and not feel embarrassed. Try that with your i30/Mazda3/Lancer/Corolla.

    • Mythfrances

I would probably feel a little better cos VW is a bit more expensive, but still embarrassed!!!

      • Damian

“The big plus not mentioned, you can park your $22 000 Golf next to a BMW/Audi/MB/Lexus and not feel embarrassed. Try that with your i30/Mazda3/Lancer/Corolla.”

I’d be embarrassed that I spent $25k on a base model Golf with a plastic steering wheel and hub caps.

If by driving a VW Golf, you feel that a certain part of your anatomy has gotten bigger, then you have some serious personal issues.

  • Car Fanatic

Let me clarify a few points to those of you making wild claims for and against VW. I own both a Golf and a Mazda 3. Both cars drive and handle brilliantly and I don’t know where VW fan got his stats on the Mazda but they reach 100 km/h alot quicker than 10.5seconds making the 3 better in that respect. Point 2, I’ve had my Golf for just on 3 years now and it is still as good to drive as the day I bought it. Both cars do about 30k a year and I can tell you, 2 VW services a year cost me 25.% more than 3 Mazda services. Point 3. My VW without Sat nav and Bluetooth cost me 6 grand more than my Maxx Sport.

Which do I prefer? From a drivers perspective both. From an economic stand point, the Mazda. Would I buy the new cheaper Golf over the Mazda 3? No, I’d spend more on a Golf to get the same kind of value as the Mazda.

If you know anyone who has owned a Golf that has broken down then I would suggest this. Part of it would be VW’s fault, but the better part of it would be crappy owners who don’t haves clue how to maintain a car.

My rant has ended, for now.

    • ABMPSV

I agree with you. I got a friend with BMW and really do not care about service. Cheap fuel and cheap oil…no wonder the car breaks down. About your Mazda and Golf. Mazda will use more fuel than Golf

  • Car Fanatic

Yes the Mazda does use a little more fuel, but I drive the Golf alot harder as it has loads more torque. If I drove both the same way the Mazda would use 25 to 30% more fuel.

  • Anthony

VW are on a roll with massive worldwide sales.

    • Anthony

The new Jetta is being launched in the US with a lower starting price, and now the Golf is starting with a lower price locally.
This can only mean increased sales.
      Honda and Subaru,beware.
VW are about to overtake both of you here soon.

  • Save It for the track

To Stoney. Before making sweeping statements about VW/Audi turbos being exempt from the high performance vehicle restrictions (prohibited vehicles) in NSW, you’d best check the facts and state them correctly.
    .
The FACTS are: The following are NOT prohibited vehicles; Suzuki Cappuccino 2D Cabriolet turbo 3 698cc (released between 1/1/1992 and 1/12/1997), Daihatsu Copen L880 2D convertible turbo 4 659cc (released from 1/10/2003), and smart vehicles (all models).
    .
    Exemptions can be granted in the following circumstances;
    From the nsw RTA website
An exemption from the prohibited vehicle condition may be granted if:

A prohibited vehicle needs to be driven for genuine employment purposes.
Eight or more cylinder 4WD vehicles are required by country drivers who have no practical alternative.
You can prove direct ownership of a prohibited vehicle prior to the start of the scheme or before an overseas/interstate licence transfer.
The vehicle is a moderate-performance turbo/supercharged engine vehicle.
Note: NSW provisional licences issued prior to 11 July 2005 were not conditioned. However, the condition will be applied if the provisional driver is disqualified for an offence committed on or after 11 July 2005. In these instances, the provisional holder may be granted an exemption if they can prove direct ownership of their current vehicle at the time of the offence that led to the disqualification.

Examples of moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles that are eligible for exemption include:

    Audi 1390cc A3
    Audi 1798cc A3 and A4
    Audi 1984cc Q5
    Citroen 1598cc C4 1.6L
    Fiat 1368cc, Punto and Rimto
    Mercedes-Benz 1796cc CLK200K, E200K, C200, CLC200, C230 and SLK 200K
    Peugeot 1598cc 308 Series 1.6T XSE
Saab 1988cc 9-3 Linear, and Vector
Skoda 1798cc Superb 1.8 TFSI and Octavia 1.8 TFSI
    Volkswagen 1390cc Golf 90TSI and Golf 118TSI
    Volkswagen 1984cc Tiguan 125TSI and Passat 147TSI
Note, for enforcement purposes provisional drivers must carry an exemption letter from the RTA to drive these vehicles.
    .
So a NSW P-plater CAN be exempted if they fit the criteria AND carry the exemption letter.
    .
I note that the website lists the mercedes, Audi, VW’s, etc. as EXAMPLES of moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles, suggesting that there may be others that could be considered.
    .
Personally I think that a blanket turbo/v8 ban is not well thought out, and a power/weight ratio type situation should apply like with motorcycles, although I can imagine the RTA bureacracy and boffins would struggle trying to figure it all out…

    • Shak

Mate would you have any clue why i saw a P-Plater driving of all things an FPV F6 yesterday? because i genuinely had to stop my car and turn and stare at him. And he wasnt one of those 25 yr old P-Platers. he was like 17-19!! How the hell is he able to drive that thing. There is no way even for employment purposes that he should be allowed to drive that.

      • Camski

There was an article by the SMH (from memory) where by a P-Plater was able to get an exemption to drive his WRX for employment purposes, there’s a loophole somewhere.

That said though, you can still drive anything on your L’s.

      • Save It for the track

He either has an exemption for some reason. or is taking the risk. The P-Platers I have caught usually try and ‘act dumb’ or are basically rolling the dice. In NSW not only is it a substantial fine, but a 7 point ticket. Which means after it’s finalised (either by payment or Court conviction) they get suspended. NSW P-platers get suspended if they attract 4 points on their red P’s and 7 points on their green P’s.
        .
More than one P-plater has racked up quite a total from speeding in a prohibited vehicle whilst not displaying their P’s, and in many cases also driving a manual when they shouldn’t. Then of course some really go the jackpot and do all that while also breaching the passenger restriction conditions as well. And if they’re really stupid, after a drink or two….

After reading about this new entry level Golf yesterday, I decided to go in to the local dealership and find out some more information. The salesman handed over a press release that was given to all VW salesman which detailed all the specs and costs etc of this 77TSI. The 77TSI does not have cruise, alloys, blue tooth or a multi function steering wheel. I don’t know where Alborz Fallah got his information from but that is what the official VW press release says and this was also confirmed with the salesman. The salesman also told me that there is NO optional extras for this model other than metallic paint. That is to ensure quick delivery times and again going with the whole simple and basic entry level golf. It is a very basic golf, designed for entry level. Once you add on your on road cost, it is about $26K, which at that level your better off putting in another $2K and getting the entry level Jetta which is drive away at $28K as part of their no on road costs promotion. Little bit dissappointed as when I first the article I was excited at the possibility of owning a golf for a reasonable price.

      That is truly disappointing.

      Try negotiating next time :)

The press release says $24999 drive away if I remember correctly.

The cheapest Jetta on the VW site is a 77TDI manual for 29.5K. Remember the Jetta is based on the old Mk V Golf.

Dealership just range me today. Salesman said that volkswagen just had a meeting this morning and that as part of the promotion of this new Golf it will be on Drive Away price of $21,990!!! FANTASTIC deal! But still lacks those options. Makes it very hard to decide now!

Made in Germany? I don’t think so the golf/jettas are mainly made in mexico.

    • Golfschwein

Jettas from Mexico and Golfs from Germany.

Well DUH of course it’s got no cruise, it specifically states that the more expensive 1.4L TFSI comes with cruise. Anyway, almost all people who buy these things are female city dwellers and there is no use for cruise in the city. Even on freeways there is too much traffic to use it, unless you travel at night.

The best news from this model introduction is that the 90TSI comes standard with the comfort pack, making it extremely good buying and it’s about equal to Mazda3 Maxx Sport, Lancer VR.

The 77TSI sounds underpowered, but 10 odd seconds to 100 is on par with many rivals. I’d still rather the Golf than a Corolla Ascent with the same base spec. I guess if Golf’s increase in popularity, wouldn’t servicing/parts become cheaper and more available? just a thought.

My wife has one of these as a company car and I am really glad we did not buy it because apart from a very solid build, excellent saftey for it’s price and great fuel efficiency it is a horrible car to drive day to day.

The DSG auto gearbox is crap when coupled to the turbo lag means you have to make a reservation to pull out quickly at intersections and roundabouts. Then like waiting for a cheque to clear from the bank when overtaking. No doubt when it kicks it is great but when you end up the rear end of the slow truck on the otherside of the intersection it’s not so good.

Due to the 7spd gear box, driving at 60-80 feels like the car is about to stall or when you put it in the ‘s’ mode it feels like the engine is reving too high so there is no happy medium.

It has already been recalled by VW to fix a computer glitch.

Then there is the aircon. I drive a holden combo van for work and on days when it is above 30 even above 40 the van is cooler than the golf – even with the huge metal tin at the back of the van! The golfs air con is what most people would call opening the window at high speed.

But like any car model there are good and bad ones and you should not be put off buying a car based on a couple of peoples opinions online.

Chances are those people have the few lemons amongst what as a whole is a very well made car.

If the aircon was better and they could refine the gearbox to suit australian conditions then it would be great but for me I am looking forward to the wife renuing the lease and getting another car.

How does it compare to the Combo for power? My mother has one for her work and it’s a bit of a slug with a light load in it, although it goes alright when you rev it hard and still runs on the smell of an oily rag.
