BMW ranked as most reliable in two-million car survey

By Brett Davis |

BMW Group has achieved top honours in a recent study by the German car club Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club (ADAC) – also known as the third largest automobile club in the world – in a recent reliability survey.

The ADAC undertook studies to find the most reliable car brand out there by analysing over two million break-down call-outs. The study found BMW was the most reliable brand in two different categories as well as picking up a second and third in other categories. BMW was also named by the car club the most reliable overall brand.

There are a lot of variables to these results, such as; the owners of these cars. Perhaps BMW drivers are more prone to having their car serviced regularly. Also, perhaps BMW drivers are more gentle with their car. Either way, this study does strongly suggest that BMW cars could be more reliable than other makes, especially after taking on board over two million break down incidents.

The study took statistics from the frequency of break downs recorded from 2004 to 2009. It’s an easy approach to finding the most reliable car and understandably, BMW is happy to receive the accolades. Managing Director of BMW Group Australia, Stavros Yallouridis, recently said,

“These results are especially pleasing for us, as all BMW Group models have been recognised as highly reliable, which in turn significantly enhances resale values.”

BMW highlights within the results include:

– Class victory in the “small cars” category: MINI (last year: second place)
– Class victory in the “offroader/SUV” class: BMW X3 (best-in-class for the fourth year running)
– Second place in the “offroader/SUV” class: BMW X5 (last year: fifth)
– Second place in the “executive car” class: BMW 3 Series (last year: third)
– Third place in the “small family car” class: BMW 1 Series (last year: third)

Good on BMW. But overall picture doesn’t paint any particular event. Of all the breakdown calls, it would be interesting to know which model (and MY) has the least breakdown and which has the most. I used to had an E46 and it broke down all the time.

    • gazza

VINS it has to be the best of the german cars they could not possibly compare against the likes of say LEXUS! Road side breakdown services have made a fortune out of BMW over the years!

    • F1MotoGP

It breakdown because it was made in South Africe and what you buy in Germany is not from SA.

  • Car Fanatic

Yeah, good on BMW for doing so well in a German reliability survey.

  • Devil’s Advocate

I like the comment about “perhaps BMW drivers are more gentle with their car” considering they advertise about being the “ultimate driving machine” and all that entails ie, going out for a decent “fang” along a country road etc at a “reasonable clip”. Then there are the number of BMW clubs around the world where people do lots of time trials and track days etc in their new cars. When I used to be in the BMW club QLD there were a lot of ‘enthusiastic’ drivers that weren’t afraid to flog the backside out of their near new BMW at a track day etc. I know most BMWs I have driven beg to be driven hard, they seem to thrive on it…

Not to mention that if you follow the factory servicing scedule BMWs are still only being serviced around half as much as the average car on the road. In the case of brands like Mazda, you are only servicing it a quarter as much.

      Hi mate,
Don’t get me wrong, I love BMWs – I’m currently enjoying my third one – I just wanted to give the article a bit of critical substance that’s all.
      Cheers,
      Brett

        Nothing wrong with that!

This is my first bmw after 10yrs of having 3 lexus cars and this 335m-sport coupe is a joyable piece of machinery had mine for 2yrs and the best car i’ve owned by far no troubles at all compared to lexus which i had a lot of trouble with the is250
Tracked the 335 several times and what a beast it is very fast and handles brillant.
    Good on you bmw.

    • gazza

What sort of trouble with the is250? A mate of mine is a mechanic at lexus in brisbane and he has not heard of 1 problem with any IS250 where did you take yours ultratune?

      • david

Lexus is250 Well start at heaps of dash rattles they took the whole dash out all rattles came back engine timing gear replaced, new radiator install leaked at top 6months after that lost all my coolant down the highway lexus radiator hose clamps no good blew the hose off faulty hose clamps lexus service guys said and huge expense replacing brake rotors all the time toyota rotors are too soft,
Overall not a bad car just to heavy and too slow for that car.

      • Radbloke

If your mate told you that I wouldn’t be getting him to do the oil change on you car again.

    • bmwlover

Agree with Gazza mate. I owned the IS250 (sports luxury) for 4 years before getting a BMW135i. No problem at all with the IS250. The 135i is a better drive but the rattling in the cabin is driving me nuts!

  • F1MotoGP

“Also, perhaps BMW drivers are more gentle with their car” that is wrong B Davis. I got to Germany nearly every year and if you go on the German freeway people really pushing they cars I mean min 130. My brother in law drives min 150. He prefers to go 180-210. That is why German cars are better because you got 40 Mill people driving it to max. My sister few years ago had a Fiat Punto 1.1 liter engine and she was driving at 160. I wish we could drive at 160 and no speeding ticket!

  • Hung Low

These German surveys are getting pretty predictable these days….zzzzzzzz!

    • ABMPSV

It is not predictable. Here is how it looked 5 years ago small car class. What is your source. This info is from ADAC website. Check it out.

      • Hung Low

Take note of n.o 2 on your list, the New Beetle!
Now that survey has lost all credibility posting a known lemon ranked at second spot!

        • ABMPSV

I noticed people on this website do not read articles or comments just jump in like you. In 2005 was 2nd but in 2009 Beetle was not even in 15. Please read comments before replying.

          • blown35-chev

I noticed all you do is google crap stats and put on here, be less boring please.

        • Jabba the Hutt

I small the same crap that Hung Low does. My father’s mate will never touch BMW again after constantly watching his 5 series go back to the workshop and as for the beetle most people know it was crossed with a lemon to get beetlejuice.

Seesm like the Germans are patriotic moreso than honest. No offence David but you report on the is250 is on the nose too. I am no toyota fan by any means and plenty of people here will verify that. However Lexus are renowned for “not going wrong”.

    • F1MotoGP

I do not know what your source but I find info going back to 1978 from ADAC website and here is the winners in each class in 1990.

      * Toyota Starlet (small cars)
      * Mitsubishi Colt/ Lancer (Lower middle class)
      * Toyota Carina (Bild) (Middle class)
      * Mercedes 200 – 300 D (large cars)

Same website. Here is the winners in each class in 1995. My anti spam word is Mazda:)

      # Mazda 121
      # Mazda 323
      # Mazda 626

  • Gambler88

recently the sls amg was voted the most beautiful supercar by a german magazine and now german manufacturer dominates the survey run by again german margazine. i wonder if anyone manage to pick anything up? seriously i can’t……

    • ABMPSV

You are completely wrong. Did you read the article? ADAC is not a car magazine! ADAC is same as in Victoria RACV. If you call ADAC just like RACV they keep statistics on what car was waht was the problem and how ols is the car. Check ADAC website there is info since 1978 on cars. At one point in Germany Japanese cars were leading for reliability in all classes like in 1995. It was Mazda. German car companies were in trouble but they turned it around. The 2009 reliability report come out and Honda Jazz in small class managed only 22nd position. Report is for cars in Germany and do not forget people pushing they cars over there like my sister little Fiat 1.1 liter car she normaly driving at 160km/h!!!

    • Devil’s Advocate

I didn’t know Hyundai was German as they received a “Best Quality” award this year from German “Autobild” magazine. Plus they have also obtained ‘hard to get’ cetification for the ‘environmental friendliness’ of the ix35 from Germany’s TÜV NORD.

Gee these Germans are biased and I wish they would share their awards around to cars that deserve it… ;-)

Oh BTW Gambler, you may want to provide ALL the facts WRT the award the M-B SLS won to give it some perspective. A German car was always going to win that award because it was for “GERMANY’S most attractive car” ie cars by German manufacturers. It also had to be a model that was released that year. It is a bit hard for a Zonda or A-M DB9 etc (insert your fave looking non-German supercar here) to win this award as it was for German cars only. Can’t let the facts get in the way of a good story I guess… ;-)

  • Car Fanatic

Come on, Lexus IS250 problem free. I think a certain Mechanic in Brisbane is telling porkies especially if he worked for Lexus in 07 when they recalled the IS and GS for fuel pipe problem.

  • MattP

Pity BMW are not reliable enough to attend the Sydney Motor Show in 2010!

  • J.D

We have a 335i in the family and an rx330. 335i was individual, so built in germany. It’s an unreal car, and its just amazing to drive, but it’s gone through 2 fuel pumps already. It only gets run on shell Vpower, from across melbourne. BMW blamed the fuel and said we should only buy B.P Go figure? The rx330 is like going to sleep interms of involment, but it has to be said, it’s never had a single problem…

Besides, JD power surveys are a better reffernce point than this. Lexus lead them for 13 years, always shadowed by Porsche (until the advent of cayenne anyway…) Jaguar is on the rise and since the problems in the U.S, lexus has fallen to 3rd.

  • gearboxdawg

Thing is, BMW cars are German roads are probably made locally rather than the ones we get here which comes from South Africa. That could explain the reliability and make quality.

Also, Autobahns have no speed limits, German people do put the pedal to the metal in these roads. Hardly be said to be gentle on their cars at all.

  • gearboxdawg

    corrected:

if there’s no honda accord in that list – most reliable car … than i have to say that test is not reliable ;)
