Skoda Roomster prototype unknown variant spied testing

By Brett Davis |

We’re not exactly sure what model this is specifically, even our overseas photographer couldn’t clarify what model Skoda Roomster it was. All we can tell is that is has slightly more sporty bumper bars than the just-face-lifted model.

The prototype was caught testing in European alps, more specifically, doing brake tests up and down the mountain. Possibly testing the car when fully laden.

As well as the slightly different front bumper bar that shows a thin long grille unlike any other variant along the bottom fascia, the prototype also has different wheels which look like hub caps.

From the image above we can see that the car might indeed be carrying a heavy load in the back, evident by the drooped rear suspension. This could indicate testing of a new, more heavy-duty variant.

Whether it’s just this prototype or not, it appears to be lacking roof rails too which are a standard feature on most Skoda Roomster models. This could indicate this being a sports version, or, a more aerodynamically focused eco variant.

From the rear it appears to have no exhaust pipe, although it could be disguised by the camouflage sheeting. Still, we can also speculate it being an electric vehicle of some sort as well.

What ever it is, we’ll bring you more on this car’s identity as soon we can.

I like the clever disguise. Looks a little bit bigger.

  • Shak

Im putting my money on an electric/hybrid version.

My god the b-pillar and styling between the front and rear doors is as awful as ever! That’s where they should have put the stickers!!

It’s a shame that we Australians didn’t understand these, myself excluded. Just one test sit had me convinced how ingenious they were, and the WHEELS COTY shakedown gave them a good rap too.

  • The Oracle

Judging by the sensors attached to the wheel centres, I would guess that it it full of test gear and instruments and that is why it is weighed down. The wheels and tyres don’t look particularly sporty, so I wouldn’t think it is the sports version. In the third photo it seems to show the rear seat, if so, then a load lugger version is unlikely. Perhaps they are just testing a change in the engine and/or transmissions

Roomster RS would be a laugh! But seriously I’d prefer (and hope) it to be a better and newer range than they currently offer… Roomster 90TSI/118TSI or 103/125TDI would be nicer than the crappy 77TDI/TSI!

Actully on the Czech auto sites it is roomered to be a fast mpv (Roomster RS) with a double-turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4 TSI (132 kW, 250 Nm)engine.

I really wanted to buy one of these just for the “feel good ” factor but the rest of the family said quite categorically that they would NEVER ride in it. They really do need to sort out those window heights though, regardless of how “distinctive” they look.

Bring Seat back to Australia, now they have a decent line up, not to mention a 195 kilowatt hot hatch. Although Seat Netherlands had a 228 kw special edition Cupra R

I totally agree with SimonSez. A lost opportunity for a brilliant car blighted by deliberately zany styling that most people find unacceptable. What a pity for Skoda and for those who otherwise would have been very happy with this vehicle. The first time I saw it at the Sydney Car Show in 2007 I knew it would fail here in the land of style obsessed buyers and I knew I couldn’t justify buying one because the resale would be poor.

I’ve got 4 photos of a 4wd in testing that I’ve taken, pity your web form is broken. Email address please?
