Saab 9-3 ePower EV to debut at 2010 Paris Motor Show

Saab, remember that car company? Well it's back and it's planning on making an impact on the auto industry at the upcoming Paris Show in a couple of weeks by unveiling the Saab 9-3 ePower EV.

It'll be the company's first ever electric vehicle and it should put the company back on track with its previous environment-oriented roots and future direction.

The new 9-3 ePower EV is an all-electric car powered by a 35.5kwh lithium-ion battery pack which was developed in conjunction with Boston-Power. This battery pack then feeds current to a motor developed by a Swedish-based company, Electroengine.

Saab says the new car will be capable of achieving 0-100km/h in under 8.5 seconds and, thanks to a one-speed gearbox, go on to a top speed of 150km/h.

Jan Ake Jonsson, Saab CEO, summed up the concept in a recent Autoblog report, saying,

"By 2015, annual global sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach 500,000 units, and Saab is determined to be represented in this important, growing segment. The 9-3 ePower program is our first step towards developing a potential production vehicle that will deliver the sort of advanced performance our customers expect."

Reports say the new car will debut at the Paris show and then be produced in a limit number to be fleet-tested in Sweden. Saab has not yet indicated any proposed public sale date though, we'll have to wait for Paris for more information.
