Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series

November 29, 2007 by George Skentzos

Stunning and powerful, the limited edition CLK 63 AMG Black Series is born from Formula One motoring heritage in time to celebrate AMG’s 40th and Mercedes-Benz’s 50th year in Australia respectively.

Managing director of Mercedes Car Group in Australia,Horst von Sanden has secured a strictly limited run of 50 examples of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series for the Australia and  Pacific region.

Since orders opened in mid November, more than half of this exclusive group of cars has been sold – each with a price tag of $299,000.

The striking coupe is based on the official Formula One safety car, specifically optimised for the racing circuit, it is powered by the iconic AMG 6.3-litre V8 with its performance boosted by 19kW to an enormous 373kW of power and 630Nm.

The sprint to 100km/h shaves 0.3 seconds off the standard 354kW model, taking just 4.3 seconds from a standing start, and going on to an electronically limited top speed of 300km/h.

This performance increase was achieved by completely overhauling the intake and exhaust systems. The high-revving naturally aspirated V8 produces an irresistibly deep bass sound that is unmistakably an AMG.

Power is transferred through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission, the final-drive ratio has been shortened by 6 per cent for greater agility when accelerating at any speed. The cogs can be swapped by using the AMG aluminium gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, while the instrument cluster displays the currently selected gear.

More than just a faux-manual, in ‘M’ mode the transmission will stay in the selected gear, there is no automatic downshift or upshift whilst the paddles are employed to enhance racetrack performance, the cluster conveniently features an icon to indicate the optimum moment to shift gears.

Like its safety-car counterpart, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series also has a newly developed AMG sports suspension. Adjustable coil springs deliver optimum road holding and precision, the driver also has control over ride height, compression and rebound stages of the shock absorbers, the front-axle track and camber, as well as the rear-axle track.

Acceleration skid control (ASR) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) have been recalibrated to allow for the more dynamic handling which is assured by the sophisticated AMG threaded suspension with 19-inch AMG forged wheels, new steering and the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance brake system.

Motorsport influences are clearly defined through the intrior, with the dedicated two-seater sports car featuring AMG sports bucket seats covered in flame-retardant nylon velour with white AMG logos, alluring carbon-fibre trim and black headliner.

Thats how a benz should be!

  5. Bavarian Missile says:

Im guessing you haven’t got a drive off this soon Karl, what about working on it?

Ill give you my address and you can bring it around!Leave the ESP on for the zig zag though…..hehehehe

    Now thats a Merc!

  6. Bavarian Missile says:

Gee Tonyn I would hate to see you parked on the street……if you move over here Ill give you a room if you’ll let me drive it once a week…..promise I wont thrash it…….much!!!hahahaha

  7. Karl Peskett says:

You’re right BM. Zig Zag is a bit narrow for that.

Why don’t we try Mundaring Weir Rd, or Lady McNess drive?

  8. tonyn says:

done BM!! would you have space for my XA too???

  9. Bavarian Missile says:

Mundaring Weir Rd……….oh yeah ! They say you can determine how good a car is by how sick the passenger gets….whos driving hahahaha

Sure Tonyn…….We have a 2000 sqmtre block with double access ,my car resides in the back garage, plenty of room .Im sure its use to spending time with a German anyway! Plenty of room to build a bigger garage too….maybe we could get AndrewM to come over a build it!hehehe

  10. Tonyn says:

    Good idea!!! hehehehe…..

  11. Ben says:

Ok, So I have actually driven a standard CLK 63 AMG, which I am considering purchasing, just waiting to see how the C 63 compairs.

This car would be insane! You need the ESP, trust me. Even in the standard AMG its a complete handful.

My dealer said that theres actually only 42 coming into the country. $100,000 non refundable deposit is required. I just cant justify the extra $100Gs!

  12. Bavarian Missile says:

$100.000 non refundable????????You sure! Try another dealer!

  13. Ben says:

I spoke to my dealer a few days ago… there was too much backlash aboutthe deposit… they have dropped it to 32K.

  14. Tonyn says:

mater even 32k is a bit rich… i was selling bentleys and was only asking for 20k depo….

I know dealers that would take a $10,000 depo!

this car would blow the doors off the cooking model clk 63 im sure the extra money would be justified!

  15. Phil says:

Well being the positive person I am I expect to take delivery of my new 63 amg in the new year thats assuming I win best of the best comp in UK they owe me big time. Alas I fear I will be unable to afford to keep it as I suspect it will cost a fotune to maintain. I will put a tender out in the new year. But I must admit it does look absolutley magnificent.
