Hyundai BlueOn Electric Car

It was only a matter of time before the Koreans jumped aboard the Electric Car craze and first in line is no other than Hyundai Motor Company, which has today unveiled it first Full Speed Electric Vehicle (FSEV). The Hyundai BlueOn electric car promises to be a sign of the future from Korea.

Using 16.4 kWh LiPoly (lithium-ion polymer) battery technology, the BlueOne (which is based on the Hyundai i10 hatchback) is able to travel 140km on a single charge and 'refuel' its batteries from empty to full (using a 220V household power supply) in just six hours. A quickcharge system will allow 80 percent refill in 25 minutes.

The Hyundai BlueOn has 61kW and 210Nm of torque which means a top speed of 130 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 13.1 seconds. It measures 3,585mm long, 1,595mm wide and sits 1,540mm high.

Some interesting features of the vehicle include a telematic system that shows the charge status of the vehicle as well as locations of nearby recharging stations. Hyundai's Vice Chairman of Corporate R&D centre, Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, believes technology in electric cars such as the BlueOn are critical for his company to become an industry leader.

The next few months will see the Korean giant produce up to 30 BlueOn test fleet vehicles at home and distribute them to numerous government organisations. This will lead to the development of charging infrastructure in Korea over the next two years which will see Hyundai build around 2,500 BlueOn vehicles be the end of 2012.

In case you're wondering why it's called Hyundai BlueOn, it takes its name from the company's Blue Drive strategy, plus the word 'On' is meant to symbolise "switch on."
