BMW remains as US second-best selling luxury brand

BMW has beaten Toyota's luxury arm, Lexus, in sales for the third consecutive month in America. BMW posted increased sales of 1.6 percent in August, selling 19,540 vehicles compared to Lexus who sold 19,465.

BMW North America has noted August was a slow month and expects the rest of the year to be slower than the first half. BMW North America president, Jim O'Donnell said in a recent Automotive News report that despite the projected slower second half, "building momentum throughout the year and narrowing the gap with our competitors is still our plan.”

Mercedes-Benz still remains America's top-selling luxury brand. The company sold 19,682 vehicles during August. The figure was up by 15 percent compared to July. Volkswagen's Audi brand remains behind the three leaders but posted sales increases of 14 percent for August, selling 9,182 units.

BMW is hoping to take over top selling luxury brand from Mercedes-Benz by 2012.
