Chrysler introduce HEMI Hybrid range

Chrysler and Dodge have introduced two new vehicles to their line up which continue the trend of shattering the hybrid car stereotype.

First came the V8-Hybrid Lexus LS 600hL, and now the Chrysler Group have joined two of the most unlikely motoring technologies together to form the new Chrysler Aspen HEMI Hybrid and Dodge Durango HEMI Hybrid.

Capable of towing 3 tonne, the Aspen and Durango hybrids still deliver 287kW of power, a far cry from the conventional power output and performance of your typical hybrid.

The aim was to combine the performance and capability of a large SUV, without the fuel bill to match.

“Combined with Chrysler’s Multi-displacement System (MDS), our advanced, two-mode hybrid technology immediately delivers a more than 25-percent fuel economy improvement to our full-size SUVs — and up to a 40-percent improvement in the city.” Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC.

The MDS system allows the engine to seamlessly alternate between four- and eight-cylinder mode for when either efficiency or performance is required.

This is coupled with a two-mode hybrid system which provides assistance from electric motors allowing the HEMI V8 to remain in four-cylinder mode more often than without a hybrid powertrain, improving overall fuel economy.

This state-of-the-art technology was developed in partnership with General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and The BMW Group to deliver the world’s first two-mode full hybrid.

The system’s two modes are optimised for city and highway driving. The first mode operates with either electric power only, engine power only, or a combination of the two.

The second mode, used predominantly at highway speeds, provides the full power of the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 where passing, towing, or climbing demand the power. This is used in conjunction with electric assist to reduce fuel consumption.
