Townsville to get V8 Supercar street race

Tony Cochrane, chairman of V8 Supercars Australia, is doing backflips currently.

Prime Minister John Howard today announced a $10 million injection for the Townsville Major Events Precinct, which, along with Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh's commitment of funds, means that work will probably commence early next year on the renewal of Reid Park in Townsville. The event precinct will then host an annual V8 Supercar street race.

Said Cochrane, “My congratulations to the Prime Minister and the Member for Herbert Peter Lindsay who have worked tirelessly to ensure the people of North Queensland get the same opportunity to host a major event as those in the capital cities."

Cochrane also said that he hoped this would put Townsville on the world stage.

“Our many thousands of fans in Townsville and North Queensland will be delighted by this announcement,” he concluded.
