2011 Jeep Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited coming to Australia in Q1 2011

Chrysler Group LLC today revealed the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, with added comfort and interior convenience and versatility among the key upgrades.

There are no surprises on the outside, with a body-colour hard top for the overseas Sahara model and five new paint colours the only changes.

Inside, the 2011 Wrangler benefits from a redesigned instrument panel and gains steering wheel-controlled audio, cruise control and hands-free phone functions.

USB device interface and Bluetooth connect with the vehicle’s Media Centre, while a 12 volt accessory outlet is also included (a new 110 volt outlet is also available).

Other new interior features include a lockable console, extra storage areas, upgraded door armrests, redesigned centre stack, larger rear windows and the availability of heated, power windows.

Jeep says many of the new surfaces now have a higher-quality soft-touch feel and says focus on acoustical engineering has led to a significant reduction in interior noise.

Chrysler Group Australia’s Dean Bonthorne today confirmed the 2011 Wrangler would arrive Down Under in the first quarter of next year, around the same time as the all-new Grand Cherokee.

“We’re definitely going to be getting the updated model two-door and four-door Unlimited Wrangler into Australia,” Mr Bonthorne said.

He said pricing and specifications were still to be finalised and could not confirm whether there would be changes to the availability of the V6 and four-cylinder turbo-diesel, but admitted it was “more than likely” that the line-up would mirror the current offering.

Mr Bonthorne also confirmed Jeep was evaluating the introduction of the Sahara model to Australia.

“If we were to continue with our current line-up Sahara would not be included. It’s something that we’re looking at. The fact that it’s got a coloured hard top compared with the black hard top gives it added appeal to certain people, so it’s something that we’ll investigate.”

Through the first seven months of 2010, the Wrangler/Wrangler Unlimited have accounted for more than 46 percent of total Jeep sales. Sales of Wrangler have increased 82 percent year-to-date, up from 899 to 1634. It currently holds a 3.1 percent share of the medium SUV segment (up from 2.2 percent in 2009).

Production of the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited began this week at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio.
