Hi Gang,

Happy New Year,
I am thinking of a 2nd vehicle, for Malaysia. Usage is about 75% road, 25% off. When off I get very dirty. Preference is for a diesel. What do you recommend. Its down to the prado, land cruiser or Patrol all around 96 97, Any advice would be welcome. I love the land rovers but price and repairs make them not a reasonable choice.
Thanks mark

Toyota/Nissan these two Japanese makes really polarise the 4WD fraternity. Youre either one or the other much like the Ford/Holden debate!
Living in a rural area with 5 4WD's parked in the shed including an early F250 4 wheeler our family has experience with most of the common local flavors of 4WD.
My take....they all do the job, we have yet to break a Toyota front diff 80 & 100 series yet acknowledge that our 03 Patrol trayback has larger stronger diffs, some drivers will destroy anything. The 4.2 TD nissan has been bulletproof for us but so has our 4.5 petrol 80 series and our 1HDT 100 series. Nissan ute cab is more comfortable and roomy than the old 75 style cab even though the 79 got more leg room, but the longer wheelbase on the 75/79 works better with weight on it than the GU. Towing the 1HDT is a grunty puller and outperforms the 4.2 nissan. Build quality I would give to Toyota. value for money Nissan, I'm not impressed with the newest Toyota 200, nice motor but not simple to work on in the bush, too many electronic gadgets, the new Nissan looks to be going the same way and although the middle east may have cheaper petrol an eco diesel is what is needed here.
Next 4WD purchase probably a poverty pack 2nd hand late model 79 series as nothing new is either simple or cheap enough to suit our needs here on our property.

I have a Walkabout and am finding the fuel economy is atrocious.Currently I am only getting 750-780kms out of the main & sub tanks, which equates to approx 14.5L/100km.I have contacted Nissan, and they really havent been interested. And I also work with another guy who has one and is experiencing the same problem. If I had known this, perhaps I would have waited for a Toyota.

well ive just brought a walkabout after many a drive of landcruisers prados landrovers and some others and i have to say that the patrols are the way to go even know they are a bit under powered but not enough to worry about and as said you can buy a power up kit to over come some of that problem anyway.
as for aftermarket products the patrol has this in the bag as well you can buy anything you need off of TJM or ARBs shelf without waiting for many items and in my book thats a plus
But at the end of the day its up to the buyer to what they are going to use it for if its 4wding then go patrol the running gear is built to last
cheers

Craig, sounds like your full of sh!t!! Prado isn't monocone you idiot, it's a ladder frame chassis too. Patrols might have a tough drivetrain, but apart from that they have poorer build quality and underpowered engine.
As for Prado's being too small, my d4d Prado can carry nearly a tone internally without braking any road regulations, which is more then any patrol, LC100,LC105,LC200 can....
Also the 4.0 Petrol V6 Prado is more powerfull then a v8 LC100...

All this crap you said Craig is a damn lie. Nissan Patrol is most loved in GCC and Eorupe. Even Aussie streets Nissan patrol and LC is junk. its ugly very ugly. No boldness. I here the Nissan patrol will now come with 6.0L 6-cylinder.

Interesting you side with the Patrol......

Here is what Cobra045 said last week on the Cruiser

Cobra045 Says:
November 8th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

I work for a mining company and we own hundreds of vehicles.. 95% of these vehicles are landcruisers.. and the only reason there are a few nissans is because quite regularly toyota cant keep up the supply.. the small numbers of nissans that are bought usually dont last 50 thousand kms before the suspension poops itself and the seals all start leaking..
in saying that we have only just started using hilux’s again as they were banned from site for a number of years due to their ability to rollover in even low speed cornering on gravel roads and pits.

I am siding with Landcruisers too! Oh and I personally think they are a better looking vehicle to boot...

Prado for me is too small for a real towing vehicle. More of a Toorak Tractor! My opinion

Thanks Craig - appreciate it. We were leaning toward Patrol, but that's sold the idea.

Folks,

towing with a 3 litre diesel is not great, however for $1500 from arb you can get a safari computer which changes your diesel fuel timing to increase the output from 118kw to 133 kw and more importantly 380 NM to 420NM> But the best part is the low rev improvement in torque supplied by this fitting. As for prado vs patrol, go patrol. two mates of mine just returned from 6 months around aus, both diesel. prado broke down 4 times, patrol none and prado returned with two massive cracks above front suspension mounts(one of each side). Ladder chassis on patrol as opposed to monococque on prado! Good luck
