Sounds like a bloody good package for the money – how’s it go towing a van I wonder with a 3.0TD engine?
Towing isn’t too much of a problem.
Sand is. Put simply, the diesel auto in sand is crap. A manual might fare better, but you have to let the tyres down to 8psi in hungry beach sand in its current state of trim. It really needs more power for the size of it.
Defeats the whole term of the word “Walkabout” ??
A friend and I are considering a Patrol vs Land Cruiser Prado arguement at the moment for a ’round Australia trip was the reason for the towing question. They stack up pretty evenly but I think Patrol works out a bit cheaper. Just.
God the current Patorl has been around for yonks.WTF?
Its WELL past its Use-By date, it came out before the 100 L/C series and still around as the 200 series L/C is just released.

Although the shape has been around a while, the Series VI (six) currently available has only been out approx three months. It features a lot of refinements (both mechanical and cosmetic) over the previous model.
I do agree though, a fresher look would be nice, the body shape is dating. LC200 makes Patrol look even older.

yeah my vote would go to the patrol as being the better tower than the cruiser. it is renowned as having the better chassis and the extra 1,000kgs odd it is rated at also does a bit of talking for me.
one thing though is why have patrol gone back a step on their engine size? what happened to the 4.2L diesel and 4.5L petrol?
I remember when the previous models where very popular, now I don’t here much about this OK 4X4 anymore.

towing with a 3 litre diesel is not great, however for $1500 from arb you can get a safari computer which changes your diesel fuel timing to increase the output from 118kw to 133 kw and more importantly 380 NM to 420NM> But the best part is the low rev improvement in torque supplied by this fitting. As for prado vs patrol, go patrol. two mates of mine just returned from 6 months around aus, both diesel. prado broke down 4 times, patrol none and prado returned with two massive cracks above front suspension mounts(one of each side). Ladder chassis on patrol as opposed to monococque on prado! Good luck

in saying that we have only just started using hilux’s again as they were banned from site for a number of years due to their ability to rollover in even low speed cornering on gravel roads and pits.

All this crap you said Craig is a damn lie. Nissan Patrol is most loved in GCC and Eorupe. Even Aussie streets Nissan patrol and LC is junk. its ugly very ugly. No boldness. I here the Nissan patrol will now come with 6.0L 6-cylinder.
Craig, sounds like your full of sh!t!! Prado isn’t monocone you idiot, it’s a ladder frame chassis too. Patrols might have a tough drivetrain, but apart from that they have poorer build quality and underpowered engine.
As for Prado’s being too small, my d4d Prado can carry nearly a tone internally without braking any road regulations, which is more then any patrol, LC100,LC105,LC200 can….
Also the 4.0 Petrol V6 Prado is more powerfull then a v8 LC100…
well ive just brought a walkabout after many a drive of landcruisers prados landrovers and some others and i have to say that the patrols are the way to go even know they are a bit under powered but not enough to worry about and as said you can buy a power up kit to over come some of that problem anyway.
as for aftermarket products the patrol has this in the bag as well you can buy anything you need off of TJM or ARBs shelf without waiting for many items and in my book thats a plus
But at the end of the day its up to the buyer to what they are going to use it for if its 4wding then go patrol the running gear is built to last

I have a Walkabout and am finding the fuel economy is atrocious.Currently I am only getting 750-780kms out of the main & sub tanks,which equates to approx 14.5L/100km.I have contacted Nissan,and they really havent been interested.And I also work with another guy who has one and is experiencing the same problem.If I had known this,perhaps I would have waited for a Toyota.
