Toyota Australia has confirmed the Toyota Kluger will receive a facelift in the fourth quarter of 2010 following the debut of the 2011 Toyota Highlander (overseas Kluger) at the 2010 Moscow International Motor Show next week.

Toyota Australia’s Mike Breen said he could not give an exact date on when the updated Kluger would arrive Down Under, but confirmed it would hit showrooms before the beginning of 2011.

Mr Breen admitted the Australian-specification Kluger would not benefit from any mechanical upgrades, with visual and interior tweaks all that local customers should expect from the facelifted model.

“There is no technical change. It’s external changes and a few small interior changes,” he said.

The full details of the 2011 Kluger update are expected to become clearer at its Moscow debut next Wednesday.

Mr Breen also denied there would be any changes to the Australian-specification Prado in the short term, after images and details of an updated European version of the 4×4 were revealed earlier in the week.

“There are no technical changes or facelifts scheduled for Prado in Australia. We only launched it last November,” he said.

The updated Prado for Europe gains 14kW and 10Nm taking output from the 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel up to 141kW and 420Nm of torque.

damn, the kluger update looks pretty nice

    • NotTheStig

      Really ?

Honda Accord Euro lights, a horrible big chrome grille and tacky chrome foglight surrounds that don’t blend in with the rest of the front end ?

I wonder if some people commenting are just having a laugh…

i’m serious… just replace the crappy plastic silver stuff off the front then it’ll look better

        • mrxandthexfactor

The Highlander (Kluger) Hybrid front fascia looks way better

      • mrxandthexfactor

i really don’t like the new look the old look seems more composed the chrome is rather hideous and hopefully, the cheaper grades won’t get them. Toyota is sometimes frugal with chrome

    • gaz

Great looking SUV no wonder there market leader & there great to drive! Mazda need to look at these then they might be able to sell some of those useless cx7 & cx9′s!

      • MazMagic

Toyotas may be practical, but cannot match Mazda’s handling!!

        • jojo

          Mazda + Styling
          – Fuel consumption
          – Price Points

Kluger + FWD Cost Price Point reductions
          – Useless Middle Rear Seat
          – Conservative styling

  • Shak

Ok the tacky foglight surrounds look like crap, but the rest looks ok…And this coming from Someone who hates the WHitegoods on Wheels brigade.

  • Arky

All thse big boxy SUVs look alike to me. No amount of fiddling with the headlights or the grill really changes anything. It was and is OK. No SUV is really better than “OK”. But they can be worse *coughSsangYongcough*.

  • Hung Low

They went out of their way on this one! New bonnet, grille, headlights and bumper!
It looks better than before (not exactly a hard achievement) but they are rubbish to drive, I do not think that has changed with the upgrade!

  • Nobody

Im not sure why is Toyota so stubborn in launching a diesel Kluger. A good diesel powerhouse will be good

    • Simon

The D-4D would be fantastic in these.

    • Al Juraj

It is American made, so a diesel is unlikely.

      • http://caradvice.com.au auto

Australia get their Klugers from Japan not USA

  • Crummydore

Just imagine if Toyota had the designers KIA has now…

I personally think the latest Prado is one of the most awkward looking 4WD on the market, Freddy Krugers not too bad but it looks like it’s about to suffer the weird sticky out light covers etc that seem to be the Toyota norm with the upgrade.

I suppose this is what happens when your main market is the US.

  • Why?

Still no proper centre rear seat? A full sized family SUV with a centre rear seat for a toddler is a joke.

  • Baddass

The grille’s an improvement but the headlights don’t suit it. It’s the Prado that needs the facelift.

    • Simon

The Prado needs a bullbar, then it’s all good.

  • Gavjon

I bought a Grande in January this year, and seriously guys, it is a good drive. Ive had a Territory, and before the Kluger I was driving a current Honda Euro Accord Luxury Navi, The kluger has a lot to offer. The rear seat thing is minor in comparison to the CX-9 which DOES NOT have a rear footwell……. Well done Toyota!

  • jacob

Too bad it is a 6 seats only, the back middle seat its a joke ,my business went to MY10 TI Pathfinder.

    • gaz

      Huge mistake!

  • Simon

So are we likely to see the upgraded Prado diesel down under?

    • Simon

Badly worded question. I mean to say I wonder when we will see the uprated D-4D in Australia. I don’t believe it’s a matter of if, just when. Perhaps they will wait until sales start slowing down. It’s unlikely to cost Toyota much to introduce the upspec motor. Probably just an ECU remap. It’s introduction will just be a matter of keeping them where they want to be in the marketplace without harming their resale market.

      • Howie

Its a shame. Their reasoning for not introducing the new D-4D now is pretty weak. The current model Prado was intorduced in Europe about the same time (if I’m not mistaken), but that didnt stop them introducing the new engine there……

  • Van Ariel Disease

Who cares!! Its just a Toyota. Must be a slow news day if this makes it as news.

  • http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/69858.gif Ricky

It’s an improvement on the current model, which is one of the most boring vehicles on the market today (even the Camry is better looking). Let’s also hope that they get rid of the 1990s-era orange rear indicators. What were Toyota thinking??

  • Karl Krankschaft

That thing is nasty fullstop. Why ruin a design when it wasn’t broken. Toyota design is getting bad at the moment IMO. Look at the 200 series and Prado compared to some of the Kias etc

  • Sam

    there almost rukus looking headlights

  • nickdl

Looks way to bulky. Old Territory looks as good if not better and the new one will certainly look better inside and out. Plus the new one coming out next year will have better engines, better transmission and be better to drive. I’d have it or a CX9 in a heartbeat over a Kluger.

And isn’t that comment regarding the Prado diesel so typical of Toyota? They really don’t care whether their product is better than the competion so long as it sells well. “We only launched it last November,” does not count as an excuse, that’s just tight.

    • Dlr1

an upgraded diesel probably is on its way, but if you announce it too soon who will want to buy the current spec? it may be 6 months away and they may have a boatload of current spec to shift before then. They’re better off announcing it just as they go on sale otherwise they are virtually admitting that the current model just wasnt good enough.

    • gaz

Territory better looking! who are you trying to kid? and the cx9 is a joke as a SUV, mazda stuffed up big time with that lemon!

  • http://Audi Robj

    Yawn….fat and overweight.

  • Allan

I wonder how many of the “knockers” have actually been in one?
I reckon the Kluger is a great drive and more refined than the others I tested.
    Great resale too.
