Bullitt tribute Mustang

The epic battle between Steve McQueen’s Ford Mustang and a Dodge Charger in the otherwise unremarkable 1968 crime flick Bullitt was arguably the best car chase sequence in movie history.

For a glorious 9min 42sec the Mustang GT 390 and a Charger R/T 440  race, with no soundtrack other than their warlike exhaust notes. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the film, Ford has released the 2008 Mustang Bullitt Edition.

Available exclusively in Highland Green, like the movie car, the Bullitt Edition Mustang will produce 235kW from its 4.6-litre V8 and will also feature brake, suspension and chassis upgrades. A production run of 7700 units will go on sale following the Los Angeles Motor Show next week.

Unique Bullitt features will also include a Bullitt-badged fuel cap and de-badged grille, just like Detective Frank Bullitt’s car in the movie. Even the exhaust note has been modified to reproduce that of the famous car.

Although sales commence in a fortnight,  production will not start until early 2008 and it is only available for sale in the US.

Now we are getting ridiculous, any excuse for a limited run of a car!

Thats like Ford Australia doing something to celebrate Mad Max……….dont forget the fake switch that turns on the supercharger too …hahahaha

Or Running on Empty…”Green is Nice”!

  2. Matt Says:

Perhaps it’s simply a bid to move some cars that aren’t selling so well. Who knows… makes you wonder if there’s 7,700 Bullitt fans who’d fork out that kind of cash though.

  3. Tonyn Says:

ford USA have done a bullit mustand before with the old model, so maybe this is a regular for fords special edition team?

  4. Bavarian Missile Says:

So I guess there would be Mustang collectors that would buy them too, not as special as the Hertz ones though! Your probably right Matt on the move some shells,so its basically a GREEN de-badged GT with a louder exhaust?

    Didn’t know that Tonyn……

  8. Tonyn Says:

yeah but all manufacturers do that… i had a friend bought an SV99 cause it was a limited edition and HSv built more than 99 of those cause of popularity!!

  9. Tom Says:

7700 is very limited for a country with a population of 300 million. As a ratio of cars to people, thats the same as the FPV Cobra limited run.

    Tom..

Exactly! some just don’t think before they start typing.

  11. Bavarian Missile Says:

Matts point was valid! Our Country isn’t heading towards recession! I doubt they will sell out in 2 weeks like the Cobras did here!mmmmm

When we hit recession in 1988 ,the price of collectible cars such as Phase 3s that were around $100,000 then dropped almost by 50%. Our Cobras { that by the way are a much better product than the Bullit would be too} went so fast and at an inflated price over R/R/P of up to $20,000 plus! I doubt that too will happen with the Bullitt!

Let me know if they do though….ha!

  14. Going Ford, Is The Going Thing Says:

    The Mustang should have the 5.4L for V8, around 280, 290, 300KWs.

    (Report)

  15. ImportJap Says:

    I agree, I don’t know why the Mustang doesn’t have the 5.4??

    (Report)

  16. Hugo Says:

Apparently this is NOT Ford’s 2008 Bullitt Mustang; this is a custom-built car designed to recreate the look of the original Bullitt car.

This is not an official jobbie…

    (Report)

  17. Tonyn Says:

are you sure as ford have done this before?

    (Report)

  18. Bavarian Missile Says:

Ford are doing it, the plate on it says FORD RACING BULLITT !

    $33,000 asking price !

    (Report)

  19. Me. Says:

When you think about it, this is stupid. Just a Mustang with nothing on it other than the fake fuel cap at the back.
