Bullitt tribute Mustang

The epic battle between Steve McQueen's Ford Mustang and a Dodge Charger in the otherwise unremarkable 1968 crime flick Bullitt was arguably the best car chase sequence in movie history.

For a glorious 9min 42sec the Mustang GT 390 and a Charger R/T 440  race, with no soundtrack other than their warlike exhaust notes. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the film, Ford has released the 2008 Mustang Bullitt Edition.

Available exclusively in Highland Green, like the movie car, the Bullitt Edition Mustang will produce 235kW from its 4.6-litre V8 and will also feature brake, suspension and chassis upgrades. A production run of 7700 units will go on sale following the Los Angeles Motor Show next week.

Unique Bullitt features will also include a Bullitt-badged fuel cap and de-badged grille, just like Detective Frank Bullitt's car in the movie. Even the exhaust note has been modified to reproduce that of the famous car.

Although sales commence in a fortnight,  production will not start until early 2008 and it is only available for sale in the US.
