2012 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe production confirmed

BMW has announced it will definitely release the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, first unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in April. BMW says it will share the same powertrains as the new 5, 6 and 7 Series sedans (including a hybrid version) and is scheduled to go on sale in 2012.

Seriously though, how many variants of a 'car' can one company make? BMW has the 5 Series. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo - a 5 Series with a lower roof and a condensed rear seat so only 2 adults can sit on it. A BMW 6 Series - kind of a 5 Series two-door coupe. And now this, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe - kind of a BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo except, exactly the same.

It is slightly bigger and more luxurious though and targeted at the likes of those who wish to buy a Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 or Aston Martin Rapide. Of course, BMW know this thing will sell, and sell good. Why? Because it's something different. In the fast world of internet everything, car designs and layouts change like top news stories on a newspaper website. And besides, it simply looks stunning so why not?

We just hope there's an 'M' version to be released later on. That would go much better up against the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Aston Martin Rapide, which are both stonking, four-seat powerhouses. A V10 revival would be nice, especially a twin-turbo, more efficient version [smiling].
