2010 Jaguar XJ goes on sale in Australia

Jaguar Australia announced today the arrival of the new Jaguar XJ into the local market. The car is the company's flagship model, being the largest, most luxurious and most expensive in the range.

The new XJ is available in standard wheelbase form (SWB) and long wheelbase form (LWB) in most of the range, from Premium, Portfolio to Supertsport. There's also a number of engines available for each variant, except the Supersport which only comes as a supercharged V8.

All the new Jag XJs come with the very cool glass roof design. This is said to give the roofline that sleeker, lower look while providing a refreshing atmosphere for the occupants. Inside there's an all-new interior featuring plenty of chrome and piano black inserts and detailing along with leather upholstery.

As far as in-car entertainment goes, the Jaguar XJ Portfolio and Supersport models are fitted with a 1200 Watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system including a dual-view eight-inch LCD screen. The 'dual-view' part of it allows the driver to view the satellite navigation information, for instance, while other occupants could be watching a DVD at the same time.

Powering the large luxury sedan is either a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 (only available in the Premium), a 5.0-litre V8 (available in the Premium and Portfolio) or two versions of a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 (Portfolio and Supersport). The turbo-diesel version is the most fuel efficient of the bunch boasting fuel consumption figures of 7L/100km whilst emitting 184gm of CO2 per kilometre (in standard wheelbase form).

The mighty Supersport showcases the most powerful engine of the lineup, with the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 stretching out 375kW of power. The Portfolio gets a detuned version of the same engine and outputs 346kW. Further enhancing the performance as well as handling is the use of Jaguar's renowned aluminium body construction which is said to weigh at least 150kg less than its nearest rival.

Speaking of rivals, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class range comes up as the obvious alternative, with a base model coming in at $214,900. BMW also has its 7 Series range, which starts at $198,800.

If you're after something with a bit more style, Maserati has its Quattroporte range which kicks off at $286,000. And then there's the Porsche Panamera. The slightly more sport-focused range is priced from $193,000.

The Jaguar is on sale right now with prices starting at $198,800 for the turbo-diesel Premium standard wheelbase version. All prices are exclusive of on-road costs.
