Hyundai Genesis Coupe official preview

October 31, 2007 by George Skentzos

Hyundai has given eager fans a glimpse into the design of the highly anticipated rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe. Set for début at the Los Angeles auto show next month, the next-generation Hyundai sports car will pack a big punch.

The coupe will be powered by a 194kW V6 coupled to either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. There is every reason to believe this is the new Hyundai Tiburon. The Korean company has not confirmed (or denied) rumours of a turbocharged Tiburon.

There will also be a Genesis Sedan, which will utilise Hyundai’s first V8 engine.

Though not entirely ruled out, it is unlikely the 280kW ‘Tau’ V8 will make its way into the Tiburon coupe as well.

i look forward to the day when Hyundai’s interior does not look like a McDonalds toy…

  2. Insane says:

    That day is today!

  3. ImportJap says:

Well the new Sonata Elite is pretty damn good inside.

Always had a soft spot for the Tibby. Slow but, maybe this will remedy that lack. The Genesis sedan looks a lot like a Camry at the front :/

  4. Andrew says:

The shape of the care in the pictures reminds me of the celica.

    I think it\’s going to be a hit :o

  5. Captain Mainwaring says:

Watch out. Hyundai now does ‘boring’ more interestingly (and more affordably) than Toyota does and will shortly start doing ‘exciting’.

  6. Mr Funk says:

I adore the looks of the last tiburon, if they make this one RWD I’d definitely consider it when it’s time to retire the HSV.

  7. Iam agreeing with CAPTAIN MAINWARING…Hyundai are climbing up the ladder with hot looks and pizzaz with there car designs – this is a further statement that they are a giant awakening whilst Toyota is fumbling around at the top! Hot car and bloody cool looking! Quality and reliability are ahead of all Japs (SOURCE: based on i30 comments this website) and are only beaten in quality and reliability by JUST 2 car makers (SOURCE: Porsche and Lexus rank ahead of Hyundai who are in 3rd position based on latest JD Powers survey in USA). Shivers TOYOTA PAUL…where are TOYOTA you ass clown puppet!

  8. Toyota Paul says:

Toyota are ahead of Hyundai…. by far.

  9. Dream on obsessed TOYOTA LOVER as all has a time and a season and it is only the silly ones like you who are blind to this! Take heed of what management state about reliability. Paul I have proven to you when I do similar research we go toe to toe and can take it right up and over…couldnt be bothered. You do dig up some great stuff must admit (PLEASE PUT UP LINKS PAUL WHEN YOU GET INFO OK)!

  10. Hyundai have come out of the starting blocks since inception til now on world record pace…Toyota have been slower and longer timeframe. So look over your shoulder mate as you will see a dark horse blur past your Toyota!

  11. Toyota Paul says:

I always link my work. As for Hyundai, there is no dreaming on, I see Toyotas every day I drive… I dont see many Hyundais. They have a huge image problem in Australia.

  12. …to quote a great Australian TOYOTA PAUL, Laurie Lawrence (you surely must know him!!!!)

    GO YOU GOOD (Hyundai) THING!

  13. Yes Paul I agree to some MINOR extent, but it is not how you paint it. Hyundai I see plenty of and they have quite a great arsenal of cars to compete seriously. Toyota have some great cars and I do like the Aurion Sportivo heaps and would buy it ahead of current Falcon and ugly wheel arch monster VE Commodore anyday! But really Toyota needs a hero car like Supra, Celica 4WD and MR2 as they were wicked back in those days!

  14. To be honest I like the look of the edgy Supra…any ? of coming downunder??????

  15. Toyota is at the top yes…civilisations have collapsed when at its mightiest and so will Toyota. History proves that and Toyota might last some time yet, but opposition is climbing up to there standard and it certainly does not help when REALITY sets in and Toyota engineers de-bunk and move company as that only helps opposition…this is going on Paul!

  16. John says:

Looks good, and build quality is definitely on the up for Hyundai, but they’re still a long way off making an engine that’s as good as Toyota’s.

  17. Agree, great start and will be dealt with ruthlessly and quickly!

  18. Ethan Aras says:

Seriously all… what’s with this Toyota vs the rest of the world! Once upon a time toyota and other Jap brands were exactly where the Koreans are today… rapidly developing there r&d and hence reliability, quality and productivity…so no wonder Hyundai is getting there in quick fast time (as technology today is far greater than back then)… the simple fact is Hyundai does have an image problem just like the Japs did when they 1st started selling their cars… it’s a matter of time before the Koreans get to the same standards… i still would feel uncomfortable purchasing a Hyundai or any korean for that matter but you have to admit, they are coming up with the right cars and engineering attitude… hopefully this might put some pressure on the japs to release some smooth rwd cars in the future… can’t wait to drive a rwd Honda Euro or even a rwd Civic… by the way I have owned 2 Camrys and have 2 Civics… all have been simply fantastic when it comes to reliability, but the Toyo is just plain boring…the Civic on the other hand…mmmmmmmm….delicious small car!

  19. OK, obviously you havent read reviews on i30? Will knock that theory a wee tad!

  20. Toyota Paul says:

Lol V6 Camry is far more exicitng then a gutless Civic… and I have driven both. NM the i30 looks like a great package, but quality and reliability are still issues (Although that survey I showed would indicate they are turning this around)

  21. TOYOTA PAUL is spot on about Civic. The Type R would be a goer as light, but to me that looks like it is off a quirky science fiction as out there looks. Hand me a Aurion Sportivo and you have style and looks to boot!

Concerning the i30, the write ups I have sighted in newspaper, caradvice website do indicate clearly that they have made massive gains on i30 compared to Toyota – dare say Toyota would be best served to hang onto its staff as they are getting poached and systems, etc based on many many years of success is being taken and handed legally to other organisations. Paul Iam not disputing Toyota is at top, they have a good solid varied range and had many years to streamline there manufacturing procedures – unfortunately as they do not 100% own staff, as soon as they leave and go elsewhere then they also lift the bar!

  22. Toyota plain boring. Ummmm right, hello I have sat in Aurion Sportivo and driven it. Classy looking and not fake as and you would have to pay me to take the Civic off your hands, bare in mind with the current Civic (and may I add it is made I think in Thailand or South Africa) is not the hallowed made in Japan – correct me if Iam wrong! Do me a favour and if you want a comparo between VE, Falcon and Sportivo – well bugger me go the Sportivo. Seen a black one and shit it was nice!

  23. Toyota Paul says:

Nm and the interior on the Type R and regular Civics doesnt get much better, I have Honda fanboy friends who dont rate it.

As for i30, I think the i30 has alot going for it… hell if I wasnt worried about their reliability (in the future this will change, it just needs time) Id get one over a Corolla… no stability control for Aus is a poor move by Toyota while the i30 has it.

  24. Yeah seen pics of Civic inside and looks light years behind the stupid space age look of the outside. Whats with the triangle driving lights as dare say it was designed by someone who uses modelling techniques using plado whilst watching Roomper Room….LOL and people buy it – like to know whom as never sighted one of these Dr Who weirdo cars! At least the WRX looks less bizarre then this ghastly beast!

Agree on Corolla front, but then again Hyundai polarised by omitting Traction Control from range (think it was that and it was on this website).

  25. …. omitting traction control from Santa Fe base models

  26. Ethan Aras… plus, the inside of Aurion Sportivo is better then outside. Suprised you rate Civic, as yes nice but on this note about boring Toyotas. Like gee tell me one car maker right across the board has exciting cars as peoples opinions are all different. The Aurion Sportivo, well shivers I would take a Yaris over standard Civics as they are bloody nice (Mazda 2 nicer)! Least you wont get made in Africa or Thailand whatever!

  27. Kingpin says:

Yes problem for hyundai is that people in aus keep thinking all hyundais are still a piece of junk, there are just far too many Excels on the road with something falling apart.

All Hyundais launched after arount 2000 (i.e Tiburons, NF Sonata, Santa Fe etc) can match any Japanese cars in quality, and more recent offerings can be competetive against top class makers such as Lexus. Just look how SOLID new i30 feels…

  28. Ethan Aras says:

    Maximus…

I wouldn’t pick the Yaris, I’ve driven it and it is not bad but neither is the drive memorable…but the Mazda 2 is not too bad… zoom…zoom…

The point i was making is that Toyota is good at what they do, which is very reliable transport…

Yes, the current model civic i own is made in Thailand, but i can’t see any lack of quality for that, where as the new lancer is made in jap but there is obviously a lack of “touchy feely” quality…i did test drive it and came out slightly disappointed…

the civic by the way is a nice package, it isn’t smoother, quieter or more refined than the camry but as a package in that class of vehicle it works very well…

and yes it’s space agey in its looks inside and out…and i hated it when i first saw it at the motor show…but once i drove it, it made sense! the Mazda 3 is too small inside, the corolla is just that (though i’ve ordered the new corolla for my dad – it fits him perfectly), the Tiida just doesn’t seem right, astra has questionable reliability and the lancer lacks the perceivable quality… so the Civic won out…don’t regret buying it… :)

The REAL point i was making is that it won’t be too long b4 Hyundai gets to where Toyota is today, but progress is such that everyone is striving, so the edge for the japs will always prevail… though it would be nice to see what Japs can come out with a rwd car!

By the way, I’ve driven the Falcon, Commodore and Aurion and if i had to pick one, it would be the Aurion – simply because it has by far the best refinement and quality… though that’s my sensible side of the brain deciding. If i let my emotion make the decision then it would have to be the Calais…because all that power works so well in a RWD car…but i wouldn’t touch it ’cause i know they are not engineered the way Toyota is…believe you me i have quite a number of friends who have moved from Holden/Ford to Toyota because of “issues” with their cars… Why can’t Toyo and Mitsu introduce rwd platforms for their Camry/Aurion and 380? They have the clout for it…and if they did they the opportunity to corner the market…

  29. Flying High says:

The real question is when is anyone going to create a car that looks as good as the concept pictures? Those concept pics are hot and if finally Hyundai makes a car where the performance look matches the look then Hyundai will be winners.

And a V8 in a RWD Coupe would be to hard to resist.

Please Hyundai don’t go completely down the ZZZZZZZ Toyota route – good looking cars with average FWD handling and performance.

Build a flagship and they will come

  30. OK…Ethan Aras. This is what gets me about media reporting and peoples perceptions. We all now cars are made all over the world and what gets me is media in particular go on about quality issues of Hyundai cars or Korean cars in general and yet we have Civic and Triton made in Thailand and Corolla made in South Africa. Yet media portray Japanese cars to be made in Japan number 1 on quality and reliability – this is changing with car makers sourcing vehicles from cheaper markets and I rarely hear comment on it but rather knocking Hyundai or Korean cars – WAKE UP.

  31. SteveV says:

    NM is very correct.
Everybody seems to be disregarding the mindset of the company, their workers and the Nation as a whole.
If I was going to invest with someone with ambition, the Koreans would win hands down. Hyundai’s CEO and their workers have the best ‘can do’, ‘we’ll show ‘em’ attitude of any nation in Asia at the moment.
And it is reflected in what they are exporting, not just cars.

  32. Macros says:

    7 series boot……audi or CLS’s roof line…….Lexus’s bottom……..it might look a bit nicer if fitted with a HSV badge……

  33. Macros says:

2nd thought………..I would rather expect the V8 will be mated with a under standard gear box, just as their current flagship does

  34. Babun says:

I have hyundai cupe fx 2000 also known as tiburon rd2 who ever can provide you with 5y they are confident in them self at least for this period of time will newer break down. have car drive ewery day never have problems only thing i change is that i put Varex remote control muffler unbelivable sound. I newer concidering buying another car ecept Genesis Coupe or toyota supra if come in production from concept but as i can see Hyundai genesis will be for sale in 2009 so Hyundai 1 – Toyota 0

  35. Jodie Leary says:

I have a 2003 Hyundai Sante Fe which I have owned from new. It has been a reliable car but the problem I have along with many other Hyundais on the road is the paint is crazing in five different places. I have seen other Hyundais and it is going in the same places, although Hyundai maintains it is bird droppings. Those birds sure are accurate! Would I buy a Toyota – damn straight I would! I dont see Toyotas wiht the paint fade the hyundais have!

  36. 9auba2cw says:

    I drive 2004 hyundai elantra.
    reliable. and, no paint problem
