  • Raphael Kurganoff

Among few cars that have stood the test of time for design purity and classic good looks there is none other than the 1958 Austin Healey 100/6

  • Jeremy Cheah

    Aston Martin DB4 Zagato

  • http://www.facebook.com/mraedge Anthony Edge

It’s a toss up between my Hotwheels “Dreamwagon” (which has rubber tyres) and my shiney black & gold Matchbox Lamborghini LP500S with the lift up engine cover. Twenty years on and they’re two of the best I’ve had actual contact with… although not on a scale I could actually put a key in and drive. They still count though, right?

  • Luke

My childhood dream car: the Bugatti EB110SS (in French Racing Blue, of course) – often forgotten in all the hype of the Veyron.

It had the looks, the technology, the performance (V12, four turbos, AWD) and of course: those doors!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1524401046 Mark Anderson

As a modern concept car, the Mazda Furai. With out of this world looks, a noise that chills to the bone and one of the few concept cars that actually works like a real car, albeit a race car that even has it’s own air-jacks! I can’t think of many concept cars over the years that are so complete.

  • Alec

One is too hard, I narrowed it down to 3..

Mclaren F1: The absolute pinnacle. 391km/h in 1998. Look at that engine.

Shelby Mustang GT350 Hertz: Just look at it.. and the thought you could hire these

Escort BDA Twin Cam: the giant killer of the 70′s

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1435885244 Yani Hendriawan

um… isf because it has an awesome engine noise and it’s fun to go drifting in. well the one i have on forza is anyway.

  • http://www.joelstrickland.com.au joel strickland

Tough call McLaren F1 has to be up there as it was the ultimate road car in design and performance, the Delorean for uniqueness, I mean who builds a car with a raw metal finish and the Ferrari F40 for being the first Ferrari I can remember that was about making a F1 car for the road and for such a great looking car and a Ferrari with a Turbo

  • Greg Hardeman

    Ferrari Daytona

  • Ben Jones

    1. Datsun 240Z
    2. Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R
    3. Valiant Charger E49

I like affordable cars. Of course the Veyron is the pinnacle but its made from unobtainium.

  • Nick L

Renault Trafic Van, my current car. Handles great annd fun to drive.

  • Daniel Fraser

    Audi R8 V10 Spyder

  • Mike

    There are a few:
    Jaguar E-Type
    Original Audi Quattro
    Lamborghini Miura

  • Shak

The Holden VZ Monaro CV8Z. Beautiful. Quick and a proper cracking drive.

  • Stefan C

    Aston Martin DB9

There isnt a single angle that it doesnt look good from, inside and out, it sounds unreal, beautiful to drive, everything.

Aston did something right when they built that car. I’d loved the company for years but their cars were never flash, and then the DB9 came along.

It’s a car that I love to think about, it’s a car that feels special…and whats more when I drove one once…it made me feel special

  • Li, Yue

    Lamborghini Diablo

  • Nathan Atkins

The best car is really the Austin 7 because of this car the gear stick and pedals are where they all are today.

It was the template for all other cars to follow.

All cars before hand were nothing like they are today and incredibly difficult to drive.

I still have my wheel barrow full of Matchbox cars. As a kid i spent every dollar i earned on them. I finished with an impressive collection. I am certain that matchbox is responsible for shaping my life and career choices. Nothings changed really. Except the size of the cars.
If I go missing while out shopping with my wife she knows I will be found in the toy isle with my two boys (eight and six) checking out the latest and greatest.

  • Ross MacFarlane

    Ferrari F40

  • John Bonnici

    The Leyland P76 – what a boot !

  • Ben Terry

    So many to choose from but it would have to be the original Godzilla;

Nissan Skyline BNR32 GT-R (V-Spec II to be specific).

  • Chi Lye TANG

    Lamborghini Countach
Those doors! It was the first supercar I doodled on my exercise books in primary school…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=554686141 Travis Hammond

my favourite car of all time, and one i hope (probably dream) of owning one day would have to be a Wild Violet XA GT RPO 83 with a white interior with black vinyl inserts. MMMMMMmmmmmmm

  • Vikash Rattan

    69 Valiant ………..grt

  • Lawrence Tay

    Nissan R35 GTR

Many people has mentioned great super cars here.

But really Nissan R35 GTR is a practical car for anyone, anywhere, at anytime. Much more realistic and affordable than any of the rest of the cars!

  • Bill Hatossy

My favourite car was the Jaguar XJ series 1 Manual with overdrive. The first time I drove that car I decided that I would have one one day. And I am now on my 3rd Jag after a flutter with Daimlers. That Series 1 embodied everything about the brand: Space, Pace and Grace and affordable! Nothing to this day comes close to a Jaguar.

    :)

  • David

My favourite car is/was my first car – an old ’76 Torana hatchback I bought in 1993. I was a mad A9X fan, but a 4.2l V8 SL hatch was as close as I could get. The car was black with fat treads and twin exhausts. It looked good and sounded even better! Anyway, the car had to go so I could buy a house and a DVD player…

  • http://www.thethrillofdriving.blogspot.com MaK

    Lamborghini Miura

It pioneered the way for ‘the supercar’ and showed everybody that a car can be so much more than just an ‘a to b’ mode of transport.

  • http://Caradvice Peter Richardson

Love my current G6E Turbo, but my ultimate car would be a 63 Mustang (prefer convertible) or a Shelby Cobra.

  • Robert Boynton

I used to sell Jaguars and Aston Martin. So of course I have a bent toward the DB9. Has to be the most beautiful car around today.

And I am a huge fan of the new XJ.

And the other car that is way up there for me is the 240Z. I think it was the most beautiful car in it’s day. No?

  • Effie Bakkalis

Chrysler VG Valiant Regal 770 Hardtop – I love this because it was the first car I remember my dad driving in the 70′s!

  • Ryan Camilleri

Quite simply the Porsche 550A Spyder. Small, light and powerful the 1500 cc featherweight was designed to race at Le Mans and other enduring races of the era. Most famously, it was the car which saw the demise of the rebel without a cause James Dean.

That’s a “Little Bastard” I wouldn’t mind having in my garage

  • Robert

    Holden Hurricane!

  • SImon Fentiman (Fenno)

For me there is only one choice.
    The Porsche 959.
All wheel drive and twin turbos. The predecessor to the current turbo 911 but produced in 1984.
Nothing came near it until the F40 and it was a truly usable supercar (not a stripped out racer).
    0-100km/h in 3.9 and 319km/h

  • A.S

    AC Shelby Cobra :)

  • Dave L

Whilst it may not be the absolute best car by world or modern standards, I think the XY GTHO Phase 3 deserves a mention. Its impact on the Australian motoring scene and sheer level of appreciation since it was 1st sold in the 70s is undeniable.

    • Dave L

I’d also suggest the E-Type Jaguar.

  • Dereck Turner

Got to be the Mercedes-Benz 300SL gull-wing coupe. The most powerful road car of its time, with a successful racing career. The first petrol powered car to have fuel injection. And it still looks fantastic fifty years on

  • Jon Leong

It would have to the the Pagani Zonda.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000859913251 Alex Repsevicius

    Renault 5 turbo

    or a Lamborghini Countach

depending whether i have to pay or not

  • Peter Bogdanoff

I am a die hard Ford man so GTHO Phase 3, XC Cobra,XE ESP 5.8, Sierra RS 500,” my XR6 Turbo” and my next car FPV F6…

  • Azhari

    Lamborghini Miura full stop !

  • laurie

    G-O-G-G-O-M-O-B-I-L

  • Jim Luscombe

    Favorite car:

    Jaguar E-type coupe – series 1 3.8

While it may not have all the gee-whiz safety attributes of today’s cars, it is still one of the best looking, regardless of vintage.

  • hmmm

no Harley Earls 1959 Cadillac Barritz

  • Neil Gough

What about Jeremy Clarkson’s Toybota? Brilliant, until it rolled over….

  • Joshua Wheeler

Favourite car, Ford Falcon XA GTHO Phase IV. Only 4 produced and then ceased as they were literally too powerful/awesome for the times!

  • http://www.facebook.com/goops Ace Goopy

  • Greg

Aston Martin V8 Saloon Series 3

  • nickdl

XB GT Coupe, just like the one in Mad Max, with a real supercharger.

That or a new 458 Italia.

    • nickdl

Oh my facebook didn’t seem to work, should read Nick Dalziel.

  • Bryan Fujii

    Bugatti Veyron

  • Alpha Suradi

My all time favourite is the original Volkswagen Beetle, air cooled rear engine car.

  • Albert A

Ferrari 250 Berlinetta Lusso. Absolutely beautiful. Either that or the Mercedes-Benz 710 SSK Trossi from 1930. I have to many favourite cars. Is it wrong for me to like the Volvo 240?

The E Type Jaguar ,the worlds best looking car

  • Jarrod Grebert

    datsun 180b

  • Will Walker

Ever since I was 9 or 10, I have wanted a PANTHER 6. Only 2 were ever made and were inspired by the Tyrell P34 F1 car of that era. Produced in 1977 with a 8.2l twin turbo V8 based on a Cadillac engine, they had such features as a TV and even a phone!!! I have never forgotten this car that was printed in a 1977 new car guide from UK. Google it and be prepared to wipe the drool off your chin, and maybe even giggle a bit!

  • Jess

    1977 Chrysler

  • Jaron Fisher

It can only be a 911. A shape that has lasted so long and engine placement that continues to defy sensibility in a road car. The most desirable to own and master.

  • Srik Papudesi

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera – (i can only dream right now).

  • Natalie Hardeman

Got to be a 1937 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic
    How good does it look

  • http://www.beckerartography.com.au Scott Becker

Ferrari 288GTO, the finest racing car that never went racing.

  • Jeremy

Far too many fantastic machines produced over the last century, and it pains me to choose just one.
How could I bypass the amazing McLaren F1, or the monstrous twin supercharged 550bhp Aston-Martin Vantage, the telepathic Lotus Elise Series 1 and Caterham Seven, or even the superbly versatile Range Rover Classic and Maserati Quattroporte? Or automotive works of art like the straight eight Mercedes Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupe, Jaguar XK120 OTS, Facel Vega HK500 or Ferrari 288GTO?
Well, if I could only own one car for the rest of my life, it would be the E28 BMW M5.
Not the overly computerised E60 M5 with that screaming V10 engine and sequential gearbox that denies me the pleasure of blipping the throttle on a heel-toe downshift. I don’t want to have to choose what driving mode I want when I start up (Simulation or Arcade?!).
Not the E39 V8 M5, which I feel has too much excess weight, ground-scraping spoilers and performance/handling that are way in excess of my own abilities.
Not even the elegantly understated E34 M5.
The E28 is the orignal sleeper, and having had the pleasure of owning a Motorsport 528i (and the regret of selling it) I am convinced that that the M5 with the magnificed race-bred M88 straight six, close-ratio dogleg five speed gearbox and LSD is the ideal commuter, shopping trolley, weekend track-day racer, family taxi and interstate cruiser.
Nowadays, 286bhp/210kw is nothing special in the day when your Hertz fleet Aurion makes 200kw from a similar sized engine, and it probably wouldn’t see which way a Subaru Impreza WRX went on a racetrack. What makes the M5 so special is the way it communicates and responds to the right foot, strong mid-range and the way it bellows all the way to peak power. The four-door sedan is lighter that subsequent models and reasonably practical (if no larger inside than a Toyota Yaris), and easy to park as well as brilliantly chuckable on twisty roads with both steering and throttle. Best of all, it’s as nondescript as a 520i, with no unwanted attention from cops or hoons (unlike a bodykitted 528i).

In picking the E28 M5, I feel I’ve done a disservice to other magnificent saloon cars like the W116 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9, Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, Bentley Turbo R or my own Jaguar XJR-6, but somehow the M5 manages to combine refinement and driver-involvement, more power that I can manage with chassis that allow me to have fun without killing myself, practicality and high-performance..
