Ultima GTR Beats Top Gear Lap Record

By George Skentzos |

The Top Gear test track has become a famous benchmark for super cars the world over, and an easy way to gauge their performance.

It is then by this observation that the latest car to lap the famous test track is nothing short of phenomenal, beating out the previous lap record holder – the Koenigsegg CCX – by more than an incredible four and a half seconds.

The car in question is the V8 powered Ultima GTR720 which was driven to the test track in full street trim to post a lap time of 1:12.8 – to put that into perspective, at this rate it would lap the Ferrari Enzo every 12 laps.

It beat the Koenigsegg. And lap an Enzo, now thats fast!

    Too bad its hideous

  • Bavarian Missile

    Yeeeeppppp!

  • Reckless1

Just imagine how much faster it can go – that lap wasn’t all that smooth. With fully warmed tyres and a smooth lap it would probably shave at least the .8. But then the cold tyres, etc is the same for every car I guess, and winter and summer temperatures are the same in England :)

Hey Alborz, it’s not hideous – looks much nicer than an Aurion :)

Ugly indeed, but I think it’s made with a speed focus rather than aesthetics.

even if you think it looks hideous you cant say it wouldnt grab your attention if you saw one going past you in the street. you wouldnt be able to look at it long enough

The best thing about thiscar is you can build it in your own garage, and the GTR holds the world record for 0-100mph-0 for a production vehicle. Who says the Brits can’t build fast cars?

  • Bavarian Missile

The Brits have the record for building the best Muscle cars in the World, cant remember where I read that but I was surprised that the US didn’t get it!

Remember the E type Jag………way ahead of its time in the 60s!

  • Frugal One

    Brit. my a/rse

Powered by Chev, gearbox by Porsche etc

Anyway, the things a rocket, no 2 ways about that. Its a quasi racecar, i believe another Pommy engineered vehcile of which has a bizzaro name is just as rapid.

    Cheers

  • Mr Funk

It looks hella fast, but it sure isn’t pretty.

  • Tonyn

isnt the ultima powered by a ford V8?

  • Starky

Sorry – just looks like another one of these race cars that has been legalised for the road. Not road car, just road-legal race car. Koenigsegg > Blob

We’ll just have to wait for a Veyron to go around the Top Gear track. Of course, the lap isn’ official unless the Stig does it. He’ll probably do it in around the same time, anyway.

  • Ivan

Veyron people wouldn’t let the Stig drive their car with traction control off. They’d be very worried.

I think Top Gear is very much supporting Brit cars too much, like the Noble M15 (though this one looks much nicer).

As of the Ultima GTR, i would believe that the chassis design has everything to do with its speed, appart from its light weight as well.

  • Steve

Top gear dont support Brit cars…..thy won’t let the Ultima go around the track and have convienient memory loss when anyone talks about it.

Also its not just a “legalised for the road” car, it has air con, 2 seats, a stereo, carpets and a boot.

As for pretty….you want to stand next to one at a race track and say that.

Quote from Ultima web page, at http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/Content.aspx?f=usaintro, marketing the Ultima GTR and the Ultima Can-Am to prospective North American buyers:

“The natural choice of power plant for an Ultima is the all-American Chevy small block V8. Typically in 350ci format, this unit has always been the centrepiece of every Ultima and existing customers have already installed versions producing anything from 300bhp to over 1000bhp. It’s simply the ideal engine for the Ultima.”
