2011 Kia Sportage hits the road

By Anthony Crawford |

The all-new Kia Sportage has been out and about around San Francisco recently and first impressions are nothing short of sensational.

Credit for the design must go to the 2007 Kia Kue concept car although; Kia Design Director Peter Schreyer and his team have created a bold new compact SUV, which thankfully maintains a close connection to the Kue concept.

This is the third generation Sportage and with looks like this, sister company Hyundai and every other player in the category, will need to watch their backs when the car is launched in Australia shortly.

Despite fairly ordinary styling, the second generation Sportage has been a huge success for the company, with over 860,000 cars sold since its launch in 2004.

That said the new car should better that number by more than a few (depending on price and equipment levels) but more importantly, act as a Halo car for the Kia brand and the inspiration of further new models in other automotive segments.

Michael Sprague, Vice President marketing and communications, Kia Motors America, had this to say about the 2011 Sportage, “Adding world-class design and cutting edge technologies to an already successful value-packed CUV equation, the all-new Sportage offers Kia the opportunity to attract an entirely new and more sophisticated customer.”

Sporting the new face of Kia, with its high beltline, sweeping angles and hunkered-down stance, the new Sportage still manages to retain features such as it’s high driving position and spacious interior, which made the car such a popular choice among buyers.

It’s also longer; wider, and lower, than the previous generation model, with extra clean lines and a good look from any angle.

As we have reported previously here at CarAdvice, the new Sportage will be built using a variety of engines to suit the different needs of different markets, but Australia is likely to get the Hyundai R engine in 2-litre form.

It’s a four-cylinder common rail direct injection unit with a variable geometry turbocharger and produces 135kW and a not too shabby 392Nm of torque. It also leads the class in efficiency too using just 6.6-litres/100km.

Hyundai also have a 2.2-litre version of the R series engine with an impressive 147kW and 441Nm of torque but I doubt we will see that used in the Sportage in Australia or any other market.

The petrol version option will most likely be the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) providing more power and better fuel efficiency than the current 2.7-litre V6 unit.

It should handle well too with specially tuned MacPherson Struts with all-new side load coil springs up front, and a multi-link rear suspension set up with dampers and coil springs mounted independently, which apart from the dynamic benefits, also add valuable cabin and boot space due to less intrusion into those areas.

Buyers will be able to choose between front-wheel drive and the newly developed Dynamax all-wheel drive mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, which will feature Kia’s proprietary Sportmatic clutchless shifting.

According to reports, Kia have gone to great lengths to ensure the new Sportage is considerably quieter and more refined than the previous model, while both front and rear suspension systems are mounted on a specially formed subframe for a more compliant ride.

Standard kit on board the Sportage is said to be extensive but until we attend the launch and know the details, we can’t be sure of trim levels and features although, expect a higher level of convenience than the previous generation.

If Kia is smart with the pricing of the 2011 Sportage, then expect to see plenty on Australian roads from the moment they hit the showroom floors.

man i hope someone makes a body kit for it. it looks good but it has the potential to look great

    • jojo

Nice review Anthony and those press release pics in that colour look sensational.

Will give the Dualis/Ix35/SX4 some real competition.

Given the value for money equation and standard kit on offer from current Kia’s, I’d say the biggest problem will be supply shortage due to demand just like the Sorento.

E.G Mid Spec AWD Sorento 7 Seater-Turbo Diesel SLI retails for approx $49k driveaway Vs Kluger 7 seater Mid Spec at $63K Driveaway.

This is the Coolest car I’ve ever seen, good job KIA!
    Bye-bye Toyota,bye-bye Honda,bye-bye Nissan!

    • Radbloke

It looks pretty good, but the coolest car you’ve ever seen? Do you live on some sort of uninhabited island?

  • Sam 300TD

Looks awesome. Please please please Kia, bring the diesel.

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

      The diesel is a given.

  • Robert

Do not need to be 2ft across forehead that this is simply stunning looking from every angle and will sell by the absolute truckloads if truly priced competitive and has a long list of inclusions. Lets hope they severely sort suspension as this is always an issue more times then not!

  • Dennis

    Isn’t this just and ix35?

    • Kampfer

Yep, it’s a ix35 with a (to me) better looking body.

      • fourl6

        and a ugly dash

  • Kampfer

While the car looks good the c pillar is waaaaaaaaaay too wide. Driver’s visibility won’t been too good… Hopefully rearview camera will be standard.

    • go away

      youve got mirrors…….

      • Kampfer

Tell it to the person who run over kids while reversing…

        • Mat

Firstly, what a horrible thing to say, secondly blind spot only exist if your a lazy/poor driver. use yr mirrors correctly and pay attention to what your doing and you wont have an issue.

  • Nick K

6 speed auto diesel priced right will totally nail the competition… A 5 year warranty is the icing on the cake. The Japanese are set for a big fall, especially Toyota.

    • NiceCar

      ix35 already has all that!

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

The only stumbling block will be people’s perception of KIA in this country.

    • rigga

just went to my local Kia dealers and two Kia reps were there. I asked if they were using the 2L R Diesel in the new Sportage, they told me it would be a variation of it… lets hope its not the uk version!!!!!!

  • ox

so much nicer than the ix35… best looking small suv on the market IMO, body coloured highlights realy lift up the interior.

  • MisterTwo

Looking forward to driving this in NZ in a couple of weeks.

  • http://Isuzu BarryHamburger

The Germans really know how to style cars. The new Kia design scheme is fabulous. Cant wait for the optima.

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

      Including Chris Bangle?

      • http://www.facebook.com/sammo.8191 Sam Moss

He ain’t German buddy, he’s American.

        • The Oracle’s Headache.

          They still signed it off.

  • The Oracle’s Headache.

Yet another great looking vehicle from the Koreans. They just launched the Optima at a motor show in the USA also and they loved it. Both will be here soon enough to further shake up their segments.

I’ve seen this sportage in white and it looks fantastic. It’s going to be harder aand harder for Australians not to take notice of the brand. Hyundai are pretty impressive. KIA was heading down the gurgler until they took them over. What a transformation in a few short years.

  • Hung Low

That colour aside, it looks real good for a soft roader. So much nicer than the IX35!
Keep the prices reasonable KIA, unlike the Sorrento which is priced too close to the established competition.

  • JEKYL & HYDE

is it just me or is the grill too big and the headlights too small?nissan called, they want their dualis seats back…

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

      It’s just you.

    • fourl6

+1 on the seats, but thats not a bad thing, the dualis is pretty comfy.

  • Mr29cM

I really like the styling of this compact SUV.
    Better than the ix35 IMO!

  • http://www.caradvice.com Macs for me

It may share the underbody with the ix35, but it certainly doesn’t share the ix35′s try hard looks. Although design is a subjective thing, I see hints of Peugeot in the design.

The interior in my opinion is probably the best I have seen in a Korean car, with the European influence very evident.

If this car doesnt sell, it will have elevated badge snobbery to a new level

  • smiley

entry level in new sportage has alot more features than any other competitor including 6 airbags ( standard ) abs, esp, ebd and ba, downhill decent and hillstart assist being standard aswell, also heard its being slightely cheaper than the ix35 here in aus

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

      Almost any other competitor ;)

  • Timmo

The impressive styling of the new Sportage makes the RAV4 and X-Trail look very outdated! On paper and in the photos it looks the goods, will be back to see what caradvice and the other car journo’s think about the real deal when they get their hands on a test vehicle.

  • The Oracle’s Headache.

If any of you are interested there is a linky on KIA’s website for the car now. You can go and play with the colors and get a closer look at the interior.

    • The Oracle’s Headache.

Google “kiamotors” one word for their Korean homepage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sammo.8191 Sam Moss

I like the exterior very much, but isn’t anybody else disappointed with the interior? It lacks originality and design flair to my eyes anyway – just a few slabs of drab grey plastic.

And from the pictures it doesn’t look as if the rear seats fold fully flat – I wonder if they slide and recline like in the Forester and Tiguan?

  • The Oracle

This is a much more stylish car than the iX35. I’m not a fan of Hyundai’s overdone stlying, but this is refined and restrained. You can certainly Audi influence from Peter whatshisname, particularly from the rear. I hope they have more success with the suspension and steering tune than Hyundai too.

    • David

Maybe but whereas Hyundai has been racking up brownie points for some years now with a variety of cars, Kia is only starting the same process. The name Kia still resonates like Daewoo. I’m sure it is a good car but plan to drive it into the ground, else the resale will scare the living daylights out of you.

      • The Oracle

I would agree with your points. The styling is better than their sister company. Maybe Hyundai should get a acclaimed designer like Peter Whatshisname and send the current styling chief back to SsangYong or wherever.

The brand perception of Kia still has a way to go, too. Some people claim the resale on Hyundai and Kia is very good, but when you check them on Red Book, they’re not to class average. Particularly so with the diesel sedans and hatches.

  • Salt

    EVERYONE PLEASE, STOP RIGHT THERE

Just all do the smart thing and buy a Tiguan, OK?

    • http://www.caradvice.com.au Anthony Crawford

      Volkswagen Tiguan RRP:

      2.0 125TSI $33,990
      2.0 103TDI $36,690
      2.0 147TSI $42,990

      • Best

Haha, just another fool whose been lured in by the cheap price of Korean cars. It’s worth stretching a bit further to end up with a far better car- like the Tiguan. Korean cars always look better on paper than they are in practice.

        • Jo

Yeah tell that to my brother who shelled out 50k for a piece of german crap in the form of the EOS which has a leaky roof. Nice design flaw.

Meanwhile my 2008 Kia Sorento hasn’t had an issue & is rock solid. The old Korean perceptions will be gone before you know it. VW & Toyota are dead.

Hyundai & Kia will become synonymous with quality…wait & see.

          • The Oracle’s Headache.

Finally some commonsense. Full marks to you. The VW’s are great cars until they break down and according to pretty much every quality survey they break down alot. By contrast Hyundai continually finish in the top 5 world wide in quality /customer satisfaction surveys. KIA are now in that same league as they are entirely built using Hyundai running gear.

My partner’s RIO despite being “cheap and cheerful” hasn’t missed a beat in its first 30,000 k’s. The biggest problem with Korean cars isn’t the cars themselves. It’s people’s ignorance.

Whilst several people here have commented negatively on the ix35 I have already had people say how smart it looks, so styling is very much subjective. Perhaps the most important comment came from our 16 year old daughter who loves it and now her friends have seen it and said the same.

We love our car and that’s what matters to us. I love the look of the new KIA but ultimately believe our ix35 will hold its resale better due to there being a strong demand for the car. I also love the look of the ix35. Dealers up here have been missing out on sales because they couldn’t even get the Higlander and Elite diesel as demos with 12 weeks wait being the norm. Hyundai are making their mark and it’s being rewarded with skyrocketing sales. Maybe now that KIA have such a stunning looking range of vehicles (The Optima is next) they can finally get the recognition they deserve.

Either way, Hyundai must be celebrating the fact they took them over. Afterall they are ultimately the ones that signed off on this car.

          • jojo

            Jo:
It’s alreadt happened with Germany’s leading automotive magazine putting the Korean Hyundai in 1st place with their Quality Report in the latest survey.

It included data from 7.5 million inspections and feedback from 9,300 owners. Read the report for yourself on “Carshowroom” which was released today.

If that wasnt enough the latest J.D Powers quality survey placed VW 3rd LAST in their report.

You can fool some of the people some of the time with typical perceived German quality and clever marketing but objective reports sort the outs the fluff and bubble from reality.

SALT/LAKE: VW are also built in China, Mexico and South Africa but the glossy pretty catalougues dont tell you that anywhere.

        • Roger Ramjet

Really? I think the German cars always look better on paper than in real term ownership and reliability!

      • http://www.users.on.net/~pbm/PMMCarBlogs/Peter_McMutry_Car_Blogs_Home/Peter_McMutry_Car_Blogs_Home.html Peter Ms

When you quoted Tiguan prices, I assume that you were talking not on the road there Anthony? I plugged in the Sydney postcode to VW’s own webiste and got this result:

        Model Manufacturer’s Recommended Driveaway Price
        Tiguan 125TSI 6 Speed Manual
        $38,486.00*
        Tiguan 125TSI 6 Speed Automatic
        $41,061.00*
        Tiguan 103TDI 6 Speed Manual
        $41,267.00*
        Tiguan 103TDI 6 Speed Automatic
        $43,842.00*
        Tiguan 147TSI 6 Speed Automatic
        $47,766.00*

  • steven

Does it come with a reach adjustable steering column?

  • Nick K

I am know that this car is a rebodied ix35, it’s just that I don’t think the dieselix35 auto is priced low enough. I hope the Kia is priced more sharply, otherwise it won’t shake up the competition.

  • Vibe

Looks great! Especially the interior. I don’t know whether it’s the photos, but it just looks really quite big. Kills the ix35 for looks inside and out. And please bring that colour orange! Please!

  • Nick K

All too true about VAG reliability being less than stellar… I know I have owned 2 VWs over the last 10 years and they don’t even come close to the reliability of Japanese and Korean cars. It’s a shame as they look good, have expensive looking interiors, feel solid, and have cutting edge drive trains… Too bad VAG can’t make them more reliable.

    • John of Perth

My 2000 E39 M5 – no days lost due to unscheduled breakdowns

My 2001 VW Bora V6 4Motion – no days lost due to unscheduled breakdowns

My 2008 Nissan Xtrail – five weeks as of this week lost to various issues – ECU failure, CAN bus issue, aircon compressor failure

Any manufacturer can have a Friday car.

Having said that, I will be looking at the Kia, ASX, CX-7 X1, new Tiguan, Forester, Scout(the latter two look dated to the others) as these appear to be the only vehicles with AWD, diesel and manual, when I trade-in the Nissan.

      Keeping the two Germans :)

  • m2m

On par with the CX-7 as most attractive car in the compact-SUV class.

If the Sportage is has price points of maybe… $27k for base S, $32k for mid-range SLi and maybe $36k for Platinum. and follows a similar engine strategy as the IX35 – they should sell like mad.

    • Hung Low

Agree totally with your pricing there! 36k for the top spec Diesel and I think it will do very well indeed!

  • Roger Ramjet

    Where is the Venga Kia?
This great looking smaller car will make the biggest statement for Kia here, especially with that 1.6 94kw turbo diesel!

    • Hung Low

Yes, Instead some genius at Kia Aus decided to give us the Soul instead!
The Venga is based on the Soul platform and is produced in RWD anyway!
It fits in with the Suzuki SX4 category and is a small car competitor that would do very well here!
Why a company would leave out such an important model that could run aside between the RIO and Cerato beats me!

      • Hung Low

        OOPS RHD not RWD!

  • cocnut wireless

i wonder how will mitsubshi ASX/RVR stack against the ix35 and sportage… have got a lancer vr and am thinkin of upgrading due to increased need for space…

  • pinkie ponk

    rear vision looks crap

  • David

    Hot!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Silver Streak

“but Australia is likely to get the Hyundai R engine in 2-litre form. It’s a four-cylinder common rail direct injection unit with a variable geometry turbocharger and produces 135kW and a not too shabby 392Nm of torque”….

I do sincerely hope we get this power plant here in Australia, but I haven’t seen it mentioned elsewhere in the world. UK for instance have the 2 litre diesel, but only the 100Kw/320Nm version. I cannot believe Kia would not match Hyundai’s iX35 diesel, but stranger things have happened.

  • Falcodore

Really liking Kia design, better than Hyundai IMO.

  • rigga

just went to my local Kia dealers and two Kia reps were there. I asked if they were using the 2L R Diesel in the new Sportage, they told me it would be a variation of it… lets hope its not the uk version!!!!!!

  • Silver Streak

Well, with their apparent caginess, I’d say this is what we’ll get….

“The R2.0, which is expected to prove the most popular engine choice with new Sportage buyers in many European countries, generates a maximum of 136 ps (100.03kw) and 304 Nm of torque from just 1,800 rpm. As well as guaranteeing strong performance, the new diesel enables the Kia’s compact SUV to deliver highly-competitive fuel economy and emissions figures”.

So with that, I don’t think it’ll be on my shopping list anymore. I guess we’ll only have to wait a few more days to find out for sure, so let’s see then, Kia might surprise us all.

  • rascal

It looks nice I think better then the IX35 but IMO like all the other Kia and Hyundai’s previous vehicles they drove cheap, feel cheep and look cheap in the flesh … so much use of hard plastic and road / engine noise but they were cheap so it was no surprise.

After a test drive I found the front pillars on the Hyundai IX35 is down right dangerous and I cant help but think a bit top heavy if you had to avoid a Roo in a hurry I think it could get a bit tricky.
The car yard I visited had over ten of them covering all models for sale so Qld has no problems with immediate delivery.

When the Dualis was released the reviews all came back with poor rear vision … move over Dualis you have new competition and no mirrors are going to show a child behind the car.

Test drove the VW Tiguan and you cant buy a model in the spec you want with out some form off extras that you don’t even wont and have not choice that costs $$$$ so the price tag is much higher then the RRP and the use of black hard plastic is everywhere.
So far in test drives the Mits. ASX is looking really really good I must admit the diesel was a really nice drive with good vision but I will wait and test drive the Kia before I decide but the prices on the Korean cars are up there now with the competition.

  • maz

I remember about 6 years ago speaking to my grandfather about cars he said to watch out for KIA they will surprise everyone in a few years time. I told him he was crazy they were crap. Well I guess I was wrong. Good work KIA.

  • Theee Boooker

I have had my eye on the 2011 Sportage LX model ever since its release to the media. This vehicle is awesome with standard items that are options on the also nice Hyundai Tuscon.I have driven both several times but the Kia has won me over and I am the proud new owner of a Silver LX.
Honda and the others are worried, and rightly so because they are looking at Kia’s tail lights fading away in the distance!
