Fisker to source photovoltaic roof from Quantum and Asola

Fisker Automotive has completed a deal with solar power development companies, Quantum and Asola Advanced, to foresee the production of solar panels integrated into the roof of the upcoming Fisker Karma.

Reports say Fisker has already paid money in advanced to the companies for the development of photovoltaic roof panels. The roof is then said to produce 130 Watts of electricity and charge an auxiliary 12 volt battery. The system is also wired to cool the inside of the car when it's parked in the sun for long periods.

Quantum CEO, Alan Pniedzwiecki, said in a recent report,

"This large solar photovoltaic roof is a signature feature of the Fisker Karma luxury high performance plug-in hybrid."

Reinhard Wecker, founder of Asola Advanced, also said in the report,

"We are pleased that Fisker Automotive is quickly moving this technology forward to production by the end of this year, and plan to ramp up to volume production starting in early 2011."

It makes you wonder why all cars, especially in Australia, aren't already fitted with solar roof panels. It almost seems like we're wasting power by not capatilising on our hot climate. Hopefully the technology will trickle down into mainstream vehicles very soon.

As noted by Reinhard Wecker, production of the photovoltaic roof for the Fisker Karma is expected to commence by the end of the year.
