Naming the twins

The Victorian public has been offered the opportunity to name the two brand new tunnels constructed as part of the $2.5 billion EastLink tollway by means of a competition launched early this week by Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas.

The 1.6km long tunnels run under the Mulllum Mullum Valley in the Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs and internally feature colours and design cues from native vegitation found in the local area. This includes green acrylic panelling and a back-lit floral designs on ventilation grills.

"The winning name will be judged on its relevance to Victoria and the local area, as well as its ease of recognition for motorists, the wider community and visitors." Mr Pallas said.

The new tunnels will connect Mitcham and Ringwood as part of the 45km Mitcham-Frankston tollway, and is due for completion in November, 2008.

For your chance to name the tunnels you must be a Victorian resident and can enter on line at http://www.namethetunnels.com.au (entries close on Monday, November 19, 2007).
