BMW first to offer wireless internet in Australia

BMW will become the first manufacturer in Australia to offer wireless internet functionality in its vehicles when it launches BMW Internet next month.

For $200 (or $154 for vehicles below the Luxury Car Tax), drivers and passengers will be able to access the internet through their vehicle’s BMW iDrive system using an internet-capable mobile phone.

The iDrive controller will function like a computer mouse for selecting and scrolling through internet content, while the system also allows interaction between BMW Navigation System Professional and Bluetooth for inputting addresses and calling numbers sourced from the internet.

To avoid driver distraction, the system will only operate when the vehicle is stationary.

BMW Group Australia managing director, Stavros Yallouridis, said the introduction of BMW Internet was a logical step for the local market.

“For many of us, the internet is an integral part of our daily lives which is why the ultimate driving machine must fully support, and be compatible with, our information and communication needs,” Mr Yallouridis said.

“The beauty of this system is in its simplicity, utilising the driver’s internet capable mobile phone.”

BMW Internet will be available to order from next month for delivery later in 2010.
