No Manual for Pontiac G8
US customers buying the Australian Holden Commodore-based Pontiac G8 will have to wait until 2009 for a manual transmission - if at all.
As with its Australian counterpart, the Pontiac G8 will be available with either the 3.6-litre V6 or 6.0-litre LS2 V8 engine.
At launch, the only transmission available to the US market will be the six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift functionality unique to the US.
“It is believed that there will be a manual option for 2009, although GM has yet to confirm if and when a manual will be available.”
US pricing for the G8 will begin at AU$30,962 for the entry level V6 model, and AU$33,655 for the V8 - a virtual slap in the face for Australian buyers.
The Pontiac G8, which relieves the aging Grand Prix, will begin deliveries in the US by 2008.

Ok…. whats with the pricing, we make them here! how come its cheaper to buy it in america after the cost of shipping it there. And they get an auto with a paddle shift… which isnt much ford had gear change buttons on the steering wheel on the T series AU falcons/fairlanes under the FTE options. But anyway are the cars fully assembled here or are exported as Completely Knocked Down kits with parts manufactured in america replacing aussie parts? Or are there taxes and duties that ad cost to purchase here in Oz. Or is holden ripping australians off? (most likely)
(Report)

Ok this annoys me. Why do we have to pay 50k for an SS assembled here in Aus, where as the States pay 33k for the same car, inclusive of shipping!

I think it has become fairly obvious that Holden are focused on making their money with exports.
Look at the new Sportwagon, a smaller cargo area but styling that will be agreeable to overseas markets.
The long wheelbase VE also took priority over the ute and wagon variants (in terms of production) so they could start exporting them as soon as possible.
You can’t fault Holden for going where the money is but it does seem like a slap in the face to Australians.
(Report)

To quote Derryn Hinch “SHAME, SHAME, SHAME” as cheaper then Aussie market and nicer then VE to boot. Any shots of rear as want to see what they did at back to get it much looking better (if thats possible).

I don’t see it as a bad thing that Holden is focussing more on exports. If Holden weren’t exporting cars to markets that are far greater than ours we wouldn’t be able to enjoy cars that would very unlikely make it into production if they were solely for the Australian market.
For example Holden sell 3-4 Statesmans in the Middle East for every 1 they sell locally. With more money coming from overseas Holden will not only be able to remain in Business in Australia but also develop their cars; adapt to new technology quicker; and expand their range to include AWD; Turbos; Hatchbacks X-Overs 4×4s and Coupe-Cabriolets all of which could possibly be built here [particularly if/when mitsubishi closes]
Because one of the main reasons Holden only build the Commodore/Statesman/Ute here and that Aussie built cars aren’t as advanced as the Europeans is when you’re in a relatively small market with limited resources you can’t afford to take risks.
So as far as I’m concerned Holdens Export Program can only mean good things for Australia. Afterall BMW MB Audi VW and Porsche Export thousands of cars yet they still look after the locals [with similar products].

Hmmm… You’d think America would go to war with us for providing them with such crappy material… ie the G8. And what a rip! As much as I loathe Holden, why does the USA get the G8 cheaper over there, compared to the SV6 and the SS over here!? Thats bullcrap! Holden would want to have a good explanation, otherwise Ford will trample them with the arrival of the new Falcon… Which I hope Ford do.
BRING ON THE FALCON ORION!

The Orion Falcon will have a likley chance of export to USA, that’s why Ford took one over there. (Report)
October 19th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
You can’t blame Holden for a product that is manufactured in the US being cheaper than the equivalent product made here.
For start, every car made here has a vast amount of money built into the price to cover every imaginable government impost. To name a few, there is GST, multiply the final price by 9.09% to work it out, there is Corporate income tax of 30% to cover, there are massive amounts for workcare, ADR compliance, etc, etc. GST on a $40000 car is $3636
Then there are the Holden costs, such as the development, tooling, advertising & marketing, which has to be recovered over a FAR smaller model run than in the US, and this could easily be $5000 per car.
It’s not common practise for car companies to make excessive profits in their AU operations due to the very high Corporate tax rate levied here. Almost all car companies that have international parents (I actually think that is ALL of them anyway) will minimise the profits they declare in AU versus the profits they declare elsewhere because at the end of the year the company keeps more of its hard earned.
There are many cases of ATO investigations into such practises, for example a fully imported gearbox might cost the AU division $4000, when the cost to the Japanese head office is only $1000. This neatly transfers $3000 away from the ATO saving $900 tax, and they don’t like it, never have.
That’s a few reasons why the car is cheaper in the US than here.
And if you are wondering why housing affordability is so poor in AU, there are some similarities to the cost of cars, but it’s the wrong forum for that :)

Those Ford lovers are just jealous of Holden’s success, something Ford won’t get with the Orion which is still based on a 20th century platform as a result of the losses they made with the AU (awfully ugly),BA ( Bloody awful) and BF ( bloody F—ed).

Yes it was a certainty ,we were told at the beginning of the year that there was going to be a Cobra ,people started placing orders for them 3 months in advance thats why half were sold before Bathurst was announced ,oh and Ford announced it to the public on the 2nd of October days before Bathurst. Was it a hit, well I guess if they have only been released for a little over 2 weeks and sold out ,plus going for $23,000 over the recommended retail price like the one on EBAY last night that sold for $94.000 ,I would say thats a success! When was the last time Holden released a limited ED that sold out and increased in value by that amount? How is that lovely limited edition thing that Holden released at the show going, sold out yet??????

a waiting list doesnt always mean they are selling heaps more it just means they are not making enough.
take a look at buying a porsche and you will find a 2 year waiting list is common. does that mean that they must sell a hell of a lot more porsches than falcons?

I really don’t think he has any idea of anything!Very true Andrew thats exactly what a waiting list is! We waited 6 months for the BA 12 months for a Merc once!
Hey Wheelnut what do they go for now and what were they new? Is that that bright yellow one with the ricer looking wing on the back?

Yeah, 20% retained value after 11 years, BM. Ah well, it’s only a car. That’s depreciation for you.
Don’t expect anything grander out of the current batch of HSVs and FPVs 11 years down the track. They’ll just be used cars.
(Report)
October 20th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Not all of the FPV range though, not sure how the other half will go trying to claim the Cobra against his tax ? I guess just the repayments will count no depreciation .That will have the accountant puzzled.for once!
I guess when he sells it he will have to pay capital gains on it!
Hey golfschwein ,I think the FPV badge holds its value better ! Yep they seem to devalue in the first 5 years but some like the TS50s and TE50s and more resent the 40th anniversary and Cobras for ford have done real well.
Even some of the early Tickford GTs went down and are now going up! Thats Ford ,I guess there still the Epitome of Australian muscle and Collectors cars in Australia and in the World if you look per capita!
Even most of the yank stuff cant hold a candle to our GTs in return for your money!

To Football Meat Pies Kangeroos and Holden cars;
For all the intelligence and perception in investments you appear to have, you’re still a product of Holden Marketing wizardry.
If the best you can pull out of your hat is the Fiesta being built in Thailand…that says everything I need to know.
Mazda and Ford a pumping half a billion dollars just to bring the Manufacturing plant up to world standard. Oh and I forgot to mention that Honda make the V6 Accord in Thailand.
Holden are now in the business of manufacturing half-arsed products iced with some well thought up marketing (the only quality component of the product they are selling I might add) and because of this, Joe average IQ succumbs to the great lie that Holden have worked so hard to maintain; that they are indeed Australian where in reality the Lion and steering wheel are the only thing that remain of the once Australian Company that was bought up before they could even manufacture the FJ.
Compare a Daewoo built sub-standard gutless wonder known as the Epica (a half arsed name) to the European Car of the Year; a la’ Mondeo- oh wait, there is NO comparison.
The Falcon which will be based on a COTY platform that will be even more improved with Territory components(oh wait…another COTY) as well as heavily revised drivelines, all new body/sheet metal as well as the Ideals that Ford uphold of not skimping on quality for the sake of making more dollars unlike your beloved Holden which are now in reality “The commodore company” and everything else comes out second rate.
Perhaps if you did as much research in your shares and investments as you did your can-do-no-wrong-GMH, you would actually have made some sort of a valid argument.

Hey Chris, I checked out the Mondeo TDci hatch this morning. Very impressed, even if the rear passenger door handle garnish came off in my hand.
Check the stats. This thing is 86mm shorter than a Falcon, but is wider, higher, wider-tracked and lighter than a Falcon by the weight of, just guessing, the tail shaft. Oh, it’s easier to get in and out of, too. The 9 year old AU-BF architecture’s hooped roof and door apertures were always too much for my 184cm frame, so that’ll hopefully be one great improvement with Orion.
Mondeo will slaughter Crapica.

special models from ford seem to be much more appreciated than those from holden

In relation to the GTS-R they made 75 of them which sold for $75000 - 10 of which had an HRT Option Pack
However; the value of a car can vary depending upon:
the number of cars made of that particular model;
the condition the car is in;
activity and trends in the market;
whether you sell it at auction trade in or private sale; what the car means to the buyer and how much they want it
I say this because Tonyn traded his GTS-R in and only got $18,000. However; at Auction a couple of years ago #05 [which was one of 10 with the GRT Option Pack] sold for $120;000 - it was in mint condition with low Kms and had a full history.
Andrew M says EL GTs are worth $90,000 whereas a couple of years ago my mate traded his in and only got $30,000

yeah bavarian i work for Audi… or a dealership at least!!
Yeah you cant trust those XA’s!!! my TS50 is feeling a bit lonely but i have had to store it somewhere else!!!
Its all good the RS4 and the XA got on… hehehe… i think it was a motoring enthuiasts delight in my shed last night…. sounds like a pretty potent XA you have! mine is very mild, 450hp flywheel but i never built it to race, i just wanted it to sound cranky at traffic lights!
El GT’s are slowly creeping up in value…. i have been hunting for a good one and they are getting back to the $50k mark… the GTSR i traded was reasonable, needed 4 tyres and maybe the front bumperbar painted… it had done 105000 klms and did have the HRT enhances decal on the guards…. sounds like it was a good buy, i should of kept it… i dont think i could handle having a dark side product in my garage… actually i couldnt…

I forgot you had the TS50 ,we almost bought one but decided to wait for the BA. Funny thing is the TE and TS are bringing more money????? They were last of the old winsor and went pretty good, the other half loved the paddle shift, thought it great. I like a good old manual though!
What colour is it?
Only 450 hp in the XA thats 150 more than they came with! You want it to sound cranky at the lights..hahaha ,pull out the manual choke!
Mr Bavarian is a mechanic by trade and built all of the cars he or I have owned ! As much as I understand people having cheque book cars its nice if you can do it yourself.
Apart from painting it and manufacturing exhaust he assembled everything, looking back I guess we now wish we hadn’t modified it so much with the price being where they are,but he has started buying original bits for it again with the though of restoring it to original one day! If you threw some globes on it and didn’t look under the car,in the boot or under the bonnet you would think stock! Interior is untouched !
We started rebuilding it in 1993 ,to its now modified state, previous to that it was just a tidy XA Coupe with big wheels on it!
I like the EL GTs you would be amazed at what some of these cars are changing hands for in the clubs! Most GTs these days are sold through a friend of a friend !
Would love to see your XA , my old one and yours could have been twins! Mine had a factory sun roof!

My Xa was repainted in 1973 and still has that paint on it, trim is untouched even the 8 track player still works! I have not modified it structually but my car has an interesting history, has been in the family since new… I will send you a email if you would like!
The TS50 is blueprint, i didnt want that colour but ended up with it, i have modified it a bit but not too far, has 20″ front wheels and 22″ rear wheels and lowered. Its a great car… i was going to buy a BA until i drove the TS and ended up with that! I am just about to put it on the market though… i am not usuing it and i need shed space for another project! and i usually have to leave one car outside!
EL Gt’s are hard to find if you want a good one, i have given up on that thought, i am chasing a DJR 320 i think i would like one of those….

I am going to ask David to allow you to email him so he can give you my email address,I don’t want to give it out on the site as its a business email and as Alborz seems to be too busy in Melbourne this weekend Ill try this method first!
So how good is the paint ? Mine had been on blocks for 10 years before I bought it in 1989 ,paid $13,000 ,that was a lot of money for a XA 4 door then ! Steve Choppings Dad use to own it ,I am from Tassie originaly so it was a one owner car when I bought it! Mine had had a hit on the back left hand door and didn’t line up properly and some one had polished the black out on the bonnet,a few little dents but nothing major but I got it repainted and had the engine re built cause it was blowing smoke from sitting around so long the bores had glazed up! Interior was imaco .
Steve Chopping I think is the Chief Steward of V8 Supercars now!
Blue Print……nice colour ! You have pimped it? Did you keep the original wheels?
Had a DJR over here for sale a while ago….how many did they make of them?
(Report)
October 21st, 2007 at 12:03 pm
paint is 99%, it is brillian, if i had to do anything i would repaint the black again, but other than that it is perfect. i couldnt help myself with the GT either, it had 18×7 and 18×9 simmons, but i have a set or genuine ford globes and the original 12 slots with aquajets…. other than a few internal engine mods it is standard… when i can email you i will tell you some history on my car it is pretty good! my family had my gt in a temp controlled shed, so it was preserved well…. but needed a mechanical rebuild after is sat unturned for 20 years! it took me two days to unpack the apple boxes around it to get it out!
TS50 i have pimped a bit, i love playing with cars, but i always keep all the stock gear for my cars… ill send you a pic of it too it looks the goods with the big wheels on it, just something different! One of my past loves now resides in perth and he works for a dealer over there, it was an XR8 sprint!
I have located a DJR, it is a little pricey but i think i will try to squeeze it in my collection, hence why i need to sell the TS if i do it…. but i have grown attached to the TS, it is a great car… wish it was manual but! although i have fallen in love with the RS4…

“I have never experienced an automotive company [such as Holden], including my three years at BMW, that has so much passion for excellence and dedication to the product,” said Lutz.

Who really cares? The six speed auto is a slow piece of crap regardless of how many gears there are. From numerous reports I have heard that the six speed auto in the SS acheived higher fuel consumption than the previous povo 4 speeder in the VZ SS. So, it really doesn’t matter because the gearbox sucks balls anyway. If you want a decent autobox V8 just go ford, it is a much better overall package.

Even though the G6 and G8 may be registered names of Ford. GM would still be allowed to use them because; except in the case of Major Trademarks the US doesn’t recognise product names and the like.
I mean Ford could register the name “Typhoon” for example in Australia - with international reference.. and for some reason under US Law GM could also use the name “Typhoon” on one of their cars.
They get away with it because if Ford wanted to sue GM it would have to be done under US law [because that’s where the breach was comitted] and US law allows it to happen.
Yet if a US company registered a particular product name and Ford tried to register the same name you would most likely be sued under international law for $000s if not $000,000’s

I hear what your trying to say Wheelnut but from my experience in trade marking and design registering Ford would have a case in Australia if GMH tried too !
We have our products trade marked in Europe,Australia {has shit laws by the way……..and because we registered in Europe and Australia first we get first preference in the USA ……so wouldn’t Ford if they tried to fight GM?
Our products are both design and trade marked in all countries!
We have fought large companies and won before ………I think it comes down to Fords care factor on it!
(Report)
October 24th, 2007 at 8:09 pm
yeah the fact that GM would only use it in the US made me think that the laws might provide a sort of loop hole.
i suppose it depends exactlly how they registered it. dont forget that ford is also a US company too and if it (G6 and G8 etc) were also affiliated with that branch then im sure it would be oh oh!! because someone would be upset then.
hey wheelnut have you heard the new holden ute Radio ads? you know where they go through the history 1967, 1977, 1987,1997,2007 commenting on each year when each came out….. have you heard it?

whether you can be bothered to pursue legal action; whether or not you’re prepared to spend $000s on a court case - providing you have the $ [which in reality neither Ford or GM-H or any other car maker for that matter] have.
The only way around it is if GM “agrees” to pay Ford for the use of the name like car companies pay for using the acronyms like ABS; ESP; SRS; DOD; MRC; SMG etc

Andrew - I have heard it and I noticed that they say “1987″ when infact Holden didn’t have a ute in the VL series.. Although I have seen one custom built VL ute with stepsides etc
Holden; are just hoping that the majority of people wouldn’t pick-up on it [no pun intended]
However; the reason they say 1987 could be because most “Advertising Gurus” wouldn’t know either.

thats right they skipped the ute for quite a while through those series.
yep they must be counting on most people not knowing. and like you said the people trying to sell the new utes prob dont realise either.
i just found it quite funny that they cound play on the revolution of the 1987 holden ute and the great things it brought yet there was no such thing. ha ha ha ha ha ha
although holden does a great job of marketing they really leave themselves open to be torn apart by other manufacturers. if holden were in the great debate they would look mighty silly.
oh its good to see holden tv ads now only say they are celebrating “this month” rather than celebrating “bathurst this month”.
a little bit of editing has finally removed mention of bathurst.

Yes, I noticed that they changed their ads. I suppose they don’t want Ford fans making fun of them any more.

Making fun of them? Are you serious. You should come to the drags one week and see who is laughing at who.
Also, who is winning in the sales race? Yeah, thats what I thought. Boo Hoo you 14 year old freak.

ME STFU you stuipid bogan ocka. Nobody cares if you drag a vl ss and some ancient unbadged ford down near the trailorpark and then go and wank on about it down at your public library. The fact that you are questioning peoples age clearly shows you areprobably 14 years or less than. If you referring to real drag cars (which you never go to, which shows your lack of knowledge) you would have realised that the cars have extremely heavy mods, run different fuel ocatne ect, and are not ROAD LEGAL! And finally if you could actually read and were able to go to a legal drag session you would see that many of the cars are not bogan-doores and that they do not usually win. So go back to your flipping trailorpark as your beans are getting cold and stop using government funded internet access as I pay for it you bastard.

Whos ME? what an idiot!
HAHA at leats I’m alot older than 14, unlike you less than 10. Just because Holden out sells Ford doesn’t mean it’s a better car.
WHO THE FU*K USES DOORSLAMMER DRAGS FOR ANY REASON TO SAY “HOLDEN MAKE BETTER ROAD CARS”? …umm, dumbarses do!
Dragcars use modified Chev engines with superchargers.
Do Holden make cars with superchar
