Toyota FT-86G Sports Concept to debut at Sydney International Motor Show

Toyota has announced today that it will unveil the second iteration of the Toyota FT-86 concept; the Toyota FT-86G Sports concept, at the Sydney Motor Show in October.

The addition of the 'G' in the car's code name is Toyota shorthand for sports conversion models.

It sees the addition of a large carbon fibre rear wing, carbon fibre rear diffuser and a much more aggressive front end design showcasing an intercooler and bonnet vents.

Toyota also say the new version will use a turbocharged engine and retain the traditional rear-drive chassis layout as originally intended.

This is all about Toyota reconnecting with sports-car driving enthusiasts and rekindling the days of the AE86 Toyota Sprinter.

This announcement also reignites new hope for potential Australian buyers with recent reports speculating that a production version based on the Toyota FT-86 concept would not be sold in Australia.

Toyota Australia senior executive director for sales and marketing, David Buttner, is adamant the new concept is high on Toyota's priorities to bring back the younger generation.

"The FT-86G Sports Concept points to a next-generation Toyota sports car that will bring a new level of excitement to our showrooms and customers. People are already anticipating the production version of the FT-86 by referring to it as the spiritual successor of Toyota's exciting sports cars of the past," Mr Buttner said.

Toyota president, Akio Toyoda has also commented on the evaporation in enthusiasm for driving and partly blames the car industry for not providing specific cars,

"It is often said that young people today have drifted away from cars, but I feel it may not be the customers who have drifted from cars but us, the manufacturers. I believe it is the mission of auto makers to provide the fundamental excitement of automobiles to customers, regardless of the era," Mr Toyoda said.
