2012 Lotus Esprit to be revealed at Paris Auto Show

By Brett Davis |

Lotus has confirmed it will unveil, among other cars, the new Esprit at the upcoming Paris Auto Show in September. Insiders say the new version will be the ultimate expression of the Lotus brand and they also say it could be powered by an exotic, 400kW-plus V10.

Lotus has always had close ties with Toyota, so rumors have been circulating about the possibility of the new Esprit being powered by the Lexus LF-A V10 engine. We have to remember the old Esprit was once the fastest car in the world, so before Lotus attaches the Esprit badge to any of its future cars, they will have to be careful and make sure the car lives up to the name.

Although no official specifications have been confirmed or released, Lotus has said it is planning to take a serious swing at the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche, so using a high-output motor of some description is very likely.

Lotus has also confirmed two new, front-engined GT cars will also be unveiled at the show, which further emphasises the company’s plans to tap into other markets. The new cars are said to adopt a more luxury, upmarket specification compared to its current lineup.

We won’t be able to tell exactly what Lotus has up its sleeves though until the show, but we’ll keep you updated as it progresses.

Looks very Lambo/Audi R8 from the front and side! Not a bad thing by any means :)

I have to say, the glasshouse looks extremely close to a Lamborghini Gallardo’s and the overall shape is a departure from the current Lotus gang… Again, not such a bad thing, just as long as they stick to their much-acclaimed formula

Is this the reason why Channel 7 has been recently playing old James bond movies with Lotus Esprit cars in them?…

    Looks the business.

Perfect timing to dust off Richard Gere & Julia Roberts for Pretty Woman 2.

That was on TV the other night too…

Looks like the new McLaren in my opinion.

This is an old photoshop, that was based on the Gallardo and is nothing to do with the car that lotus has in mind.

Who cares it looks hot! Most supercars out there are becoming very similar in their design and are selling in droves, so why shouldnt Lotus get some of that action.

I like the car, but it does borrow to much from other marques as per the aforementioned Lambo and R8 but sadly, takes far too little from its own heritage.

I would prefer a slightly updated version of the squared Lotus Esprit so these cars share some DNA apart from the badge. Absolutely fantastic if the Esprit is coming back at any rate!
