Video: BMW 1 Series M Coupe official teaser

The BMW 1 Series Coupe prototype fettled by the M Division has been teasing our spy photographers for quite some time around the Nurburgring, but now BMW has cut out the middle-man and released its own spy video of the newest - and smallest - M model.

As expected, it has been officially named the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and it has been envisaged as a means to make BMW's performance M division more accessible to a new generation of driving enthusiasts.

According to Dr. Kay Segler, head of BMW M GmbH, the current BMW M3 has outgrown its legacy so the need for a small, affordable M model was created.

"All models grow, have more equipment features and options which can be freely chosen. Ultimately this is reflected in the vehicle dimensions, weight and price, too. This is why it is one of my most urgent goals to offer a small, affordable M model in the tradition of the very first BMW M3." said Dr. Kay Segler.

Dr. Segler also revealed that since the BMW M1 moniker held such powerful historical importance, the brand opted to follow its second nomenclature method in the tradition of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M in naming the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe.

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be officially unveiled before Christmas, with customers in Europe starting to receive their cars in the first half of 2011.
