2010 smart fortwo update unveiled, confirmed for Australia

German city car manufacturer smart has unveiled the next generation of its smart fortwo range boasting new interiors, refreshed exteriors and more environmentally friendly engines.

Outside, two new light matt colours take paint options up to seven, and the front spoiler, side skirts, and rear apron can now be ordered in body colour. A body colour fuel filler cap is now standard.

Cabrio options have been expanded to include red and blue roof options while the tridion safety cell can also be finished in white.

Optional LED daytime running lights and three new 15in alloy wheel designs ensure the new fortwo stands out from the previous model.

The interior has been redesigned with restyled dashboard instruments and new fabrics. A leather steering wheel with cruise control, trip computer, folding centre armrest and LED ambient lights are all available as options.

Communication and entertainment has been improved with the new multimedia and navigation system. A 16.5cm display screen incorporates Bluetooth hands-free, as well as USB and AUX connectivity, while smart says the smart drive app can turn the driver’s iPhone into a “multimedia trip computer”. A new surround sound system is optional.

Functionality is enhanced thanks to new one-hand operation of the tailgate and a number of standard and optional stowage compartments.

The range of petrol and diesel engines is more efficient and lower emitting than ever before. The smallest 40kW cdi turbodiesel emits just 86g/km CO2. Both the 45kW and 52kW tunes of the entry-level mhd (micro hybrid drive) petrol engine use 4.2 litres/100km combined and emit 97g/km CO2.

The 62kW petrol version comes in at just under 5 litres/100km while the 75kW Brabus model is the most heavily polluting in the range at 119g/km CO2.

The updated 2010 smart fortwo will go on sale in overseas markets within the coming months.

smart Australia’s David McCarthy confirmed the range would be updated in Australia but said a local launch date was still to be finalised.

“I don’t think it will be here until the end of the year if not the start of next year, simply because right-hand drive production doesn’t always run at the same speed as left,” Mr McCarthy said.

“We’re continuing to look at the diesel and we still have our hand up for the electric smart, but nothing new to report there yet.”

smart sold 221 fortwo’s in Australia in the first half of 2010, representing a 48 percent improvement year-to-date; a result that Mr McCarthy said the brand was very pleased with.

“We’re having trouble meeting the demand, we’re very happy.”
