Inifiniti Essence concept that could head down under

Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan Motors, is working on a Mercedes-Benz CLC rival and hopes it will tap into the premium small coupe market, more commonly present in Europe. Reports say the new coupe will be based on the Infiniti Essence concept that was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

Its platform is said to be hatchback... with a twist - the images below hint the use of a double-door tailgate arrangement. The interior of the new coupe is also said to take inspiration from the Essence concept.

Power will come from an electric hybrid of some description and use low-mounted battery packs, similar to the Nissan Leaf. The drive will be sent to the front wheels and Infiniti sources say this will not hinder the performance characteristics of the car. A spokesman from Infiniti said in a recent report with Autocar, "A car can be front-wheel drive and still deliver driving pleasure. BMW has shown this with the Mini."

Now, before you start complaining that this is an Infiniti and that the Australian market doesn't include Infiniti, you must remember plans have been confirmed for the marque to go on sale down here. The new coupe is expected to go into production by 2013 and it is very likely the new coupe will be available down under.

A fairly long wait? Just take a look at it, if the concept is anything to go by, we're bidding it'll be worth the wait.
