2008 Mazda6 Details

For Mazda fans, 2002 was the year the 626 was replaced with the 6 and Mazda began the new generation of models which included the Mazda2 (121), Mazda3 (323) and CX-7. With almost 65,000 Mazda6 owners in Australia alone, the 2nd genration Mazda6 has a lot riding on its shoulders.

The new Mazda6 is longer, wider, more powerful and fuel efficient than before. Although official prices are still unconfirmed, $30,000 should see you driving away in an entry model 6.

Offered in sedan, hatch and wagon, all models are powered by a newly developed 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 125kW and 226 Nm of torque. Australia will not see the V6 any time soon.

In another step towards better road safety, the new Mazda6 will come standard with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Traction Control (TCS) across the range.

Other standard features include air-conditioning, remote keyless entry, power mirrors and windows, remote central locking, six airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes and MP3 player connectivity.

From the inside, Mazda have gone for a “Bold and Exquisite” design theme. However, with the entire Mazda range emphasising a sporty Zoom-Zoom, the 6 receives a snug, cockpit-like driving environment.

The new 6 has also received its share of suspension updates, for the front, the high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension is mounted on a subframe now attached to the body at six points instead of four. For the rear, the front pivot of the trailing link is now placed higher to reduce tail-lift under braking, and the dampers are mounted more upright to improve the leverage acting on them.

 The Mazda6 faces some tough new competition from Ford's recently released Mondeo as well as Skoda's Octavia.
