Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell with David Coulthard

By Alborz Fallah |

Last week we brought you news of the Mercedes-Benz SLS Gullwing AMG E-Cell Prototype and today we came across a video of retired Formula 1  driver David Coulthard taking the full-electric supercar for a drive.

The electric-only power is supplied by four motors, located close to each wheel. They combine to give a total output of 392kW so the aluminium-framed chassis will power off to 100km/h in just four seconds.

There is no doubt, that this is a marvel of engineering.

But engineering is only half the picture.

Without the engine tone(and in this case a beautiful one),
the car is left without a soul…

Yes theres definitely an element lost without that V8 soundtrack, but at least the performance is still there. If these kinds of cars give battery development a kick in the pants then I’m all for it, my mobile could certainly use a few more hours between charging

        agreed!

Its a Shame cos when that power runs out so does your fun. as fast and amazing as this car is you need to plug it in. cant just go to servo and fule up in 5min.

Well judging by the new fast charging stations, an 80% charge should only take about 155-20 mins, which isnt that bad considering there are no car emissions.

A very nice Mercedes, it seems to be a nicely-finished package. I even think the loud colour suits it. But geez, was this video edited before being sent out? There are many gaps between dialogue where David is left staring at the camera awkwardly, and there’s no music to drown out the background noise, a problem intensified by of the silent engine. And the conversations with the engineers are barely audible!

The editing was possibly purposely done, as the question maker had poor language skills. English is a tough one to learn if you ever tried it as a foreigner! The video had simultaneous footage in some places that were put in sequence due to lack of dissolve and fade skills by the editor perhaps? It is still very interesting and revealing.

Actually when these car batteries go flat, you can still creep along at a slow pace. Try that with a fuel-based car. When it’s empty, it’s over! ;) Call for a tow or start walking!

Fastcharging is a reality from several vendors today: TEPCO (Japan), Aeroenvironment (So. Calif) and Acerwade (Virginia)… all we need is more cars. It’s nice to see the big auto cos. recognizing that ICE powered cars are nearing the end of their lifes. Make way for electricity to help our transportation needs. End to the oily ways!
