Video: Porsche 911 GT3 Cup breaks Pikes Peak Hillclimb record

By George Skentzos |

This race footage comes from inside the cockpit of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car entry of Jeff Zwart who not only won his category but also set a new record in the 2WD Time Attack class with this performance in Sunday’s 88th running of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

Now a seven-time Pikes Peak class winner, Zwart not only broke the previous class record by an incredible 38 seconds but went faster than all but three cars from the Unlimited Class and two Open Wheel cars.

He also beat every production-based car in the field – regardless of class – to the finish line of the harrowing 19.99km course, comprising 156 turns and an altitude rise of 1.5km over asphalt and gravel.

  • The Truth

This doesn’t quite add up, Zwarts run time of 11:31m may be a new record, don’t know what track they’re running on the 5 minute clip.

But he did not beat any of the Unlimited Class vehicles, Monster Tajima ran 10:11 (Currently holds the overal record of 10:01)

Think quite a few of these facts need to be checked.

Awesome clip though, that GT3 looks like its got a lot of traction up the top.

This footage is from the half-course practice session, no where does this article state that it is the record breaking run.

The article also states that he “went faster than ALL BUT three cars from the Unlimited Class and two Open Wheel cars.” So in other words he was slower than these cars.

Please read the article properly and without making assumptions if you plan to criticize it.

My apologies George, you are correct, but you did use the word “but” twice in quick succession. I failed to see the second one. My fault.

But you also failed to mention the actual time that was achieved, so when I see a video posted within the article, that at the end says “5:01.642 Time Attack Class(NEW RECORD)” I naturally ask the question.

Maybe just a piece of constructive criticism. I am sure a lot of people would find it a lot easier to digest the information if it were actually disclosed, I.E, “Zwarts time of 11:31 not only beat Rhys Millens class record from last year by 38 seconds, it was only bettered by three Unlimited Class vehicles and Two specially designed Open Wheel Class Vehicles”

        Can’t argue with the facts…

I agree that you can’t argue with facts, and the crucial fact is that he beat the previous record by 38 seconds. This statement provides a context which anyone can comprehend.

While it may have been a convenient inclusion, the lap time itself would mean very little to most people, especially considering the time to beat at Pikes Peak is 10 minutes.

          • The Truth

But 38 seconds over a 5 minute race, 10 minute race or a 24 hour race can all represent very different results.

Incredible driving indeed. This place scares me. Certainly a course that separates the men from the boys, as they say.

This proves that the Porsche 911 is the greatest car in the world. It can do any type of motor sport and break all the records in doing so.

    Such a great car….
